Space in bloom

Which shape is your favorite? :)

It’s been a while since I’ve filled a page and this took a lot longer than anticipated. I’ve included some close ups as well.

Made using Wild Gears on 18X24 inch paper.

Best Spirograph set to buy in 2026?

I’ve recently become interested in Spirograph drawing and would like to buy a good-quality set. There seem to be a lot of different versions available, from the classic original sets to newer deluxe editions and metal gear alternatives. For those who have experience with them, which model or brand would you recommend for the best overall experience? I’m mainly looking for:

  • Smooth and precise gears
  • Durable materials
  • A wide variety of patterns
  • Good value for the price

I’m an adult buyer, so I care more about quality and complexity than whether it is kid-friendly. Any recommendations or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Eastern European Vibes

I had a lot of fun with this process! I was inspired by the designs on our dinner plates. My husband is from Romania and I had been wanting to do a spirograph in the colors of the Romanian flag🇷🇴 I still would like to fill in some sections of the center blue part with yellow to tie it together more but I need to order more markers first. I also love how the yellow part reminds me of sunflower fields in Romania. To be continued... ✨️

I wasn’t sure how to add another picture to my last post so here’s the finished product. Sorry if I’m blowing up the feed. I struggle with knowing when to stop and usually keep going due to lack of impulse control. My brain always tells me more is better. That probably explains why I’ve struggled with addiction my whole adult life. So thankful I found spirographing and can celebrate staying sober for the last 250 days. Right about when I bought my first spiro. Really happy with how this one turned out though.

Not sure whether I should consider this done or rotate the entire design 18 degrees, which would center it between the existing points at 36 degrees. I have a hard time knowing when to stop. This was my first attempt at creating works like starstrukcanuck whose work I find incredible. I’m trying to create a mandala-esque design and think I should keep going to expand the overlaps in the middle but don’t want to muddy it all up. Thanks!

Both of these were made with a 22 gear in 32/84 in 96, just with the different whole size

Playing around with the Mandala Track for Large Hoops prototype pieces and made this.

(Black) Made it with a 70 gear in the 75 ring in the square cartridge. I kept the track (the rack pieces that contain the cartridge) shorter than the full width of the 420 ring so that it was easier to step around the inside of the ring.
starting at 1A and progressing to 7B with two movements between each iteration. The track was moved 5 steps counter clockwise and the cartridge was moved 3 steps along the track. After reaching 7B the series was reversed going though all the pen holes again back down to 1A. For this reversed set the track movement was reversed to 5 steps clockwise, but the 3 steps for the cartridge kept going in the same direction.

(Red) Moved the cartridge to the far end of the track, stepped the track 15 teeth CW (clockwise) before making the first design. Process for the iterations was similar to that for black, except the cartridge was moved 2 steps instead of 3 and the direction of rotation of the track started CW and reversed to CCW.

If the parts look a bit messy, that is because these prototypes are cut from acrylic that had other incomplete gear set test prints on them already; so the black markings, while looking like wild gears type marks, don't make any sense in this context because I've done the equivalent of using the back of a sheet of paper.

I am super excited to finally be able to announce Wild Gears version 5!

There are so many new gear sets, details, and updates. A very condensed version is:

 1)  Version 5 update for all gear sets:  replacing all the frosted engraving with much easier to read black lettering.
  2)  New gear sets (9 of them)!  Doodle KitBacking Plate for small gear setsPaisley 2Paisley MutantsRose WindowBig Gears p1-3Jellybeans A&BMandala Track for Large Hoops, and Large Drop gear set.
  3)  Updated shipping prices, options, and timelines:  Shipping has gotten significantly less expensive to Europe and the UK, rates to the USA have been kept steady, and Canada has a letter mail option for individual small gear sets.
  4)  Updated discounts for EU and UK sales:  There is a "EU149" coupon code that replaces the Bundle15 and free shipping and is designed to keep orders of 3 large gear sets well discounted and below the 150 euro (or 135GPB) threshold for additional import fees.
  5)  VAT and Shipping details for EU and UK sales:  VAT is now collected for sales in the EU that are below 150 euro before taxes or shipping.   Currently I am unable to register to collect VAT for sales to the UK (sorry).
  6)  Price Changes:  Some gear set bundles will see moderate price increases in mid June.  Buy them now to secure the current, lower, price.
  7)  Version 5 launch special offer! Free gear set with purchase.  Spread the word, if enough people buy gear sets you'll get a better free gear set.
  8)  Timeline (when will all this happen?):  updated version 5 gear sets will begin shipping in the 2nd or 3rd week of May.

I haven't been active on any socials for quite a while. I'll try and be more active here, mostly posting art, and trying not to be to spammy.

I bought a multicolor set of staedtler triplus fine liners and I use them almost exclusively for spirographs. Does anyone else use these, and if so, have you found that the ones you use most run out of ink in a couple months? I've seen staedtler fine liners recommended for this purpose so I didn't expect to run into this problem so soon. I do use them heavily though so I'm wondering if I've been extra hard on them.

Anyone have any better recommendations for this type of pen? Or should I just expect to go through them rather quickly?

Hi! A couple months ago I fell in love with Spirographs and found out about Wild Gears thanks to this sub. I picked up a compact set and I'm hooked! I've been wanting to take it further, so this is my first attempt to do something a bit more artsy and polished with them.

I'm really happy with this piece, thought you guys might like it too. :) I love browsing this community, it's one of my favorite subreddits.
