saluki mix rescue update

i feel like an update is due… about a month ago i came on here to ask for tips regarding rescuing a saluki mix. i got so many insightful and helpful replies which i am so thankful for, but also a few who made me reconsider it really hard. nonetheless i ended up still going through with the adoption (which ended up being very chaotic due to flight strikes and me having to do a 1.2km trip just to pick him up at the airport and get him home).
to be completely honest, the first few days, maybe a week was a bit of hell - i felt so lost and tired, nothing was going as i imagined it, some behavioural issues were coming up and most importantly my resident dog was not very fond (understatement) of the new addition to the family. they just kinda kicked my ass together. but i pushed through it and now after almost 4 weeks together i can confidently say - that was one of the best decisions in my life. both the dogs give me so much joy. i love our new pup with all of my heart and i can also see them getting along slowly. there’s still a lot of work ahead of us, but it’s absolutely worth it.
anyways - say hi to sameer!

Apologies for not posting sooner, another Redditor reminded me :)

He’s doing really well. Wounds have healed (even if the fur needs to grow back).

Although he forgets that he only has three legs when trying to lick strangers faces, he’s actually pretty much back to his old self.

He’s able to run, chases squirrels, still wants to play and will still steal food the moment his back is turned.

I’m still sad that he’s had such a horrible injury, but I have my old silly saluki lurcher back.

Thanks everyone for your kind wishes.

(Apologies for the indecent photos)

Saluki Rescue - Desperate for Advice

Just over a week ago, my 9 month pup was purchased (saved?) from travellers. I was mislead and didn’t know her origin or condition until it was too late. She’s lived outside, had to scavenge for food from bins and discarded food wrappers and is subsequently significantly underweight and underdeveloped.

Over the week I’ve calmed her desperation for food completely and the change in her appearance is obvious. Plus we’ve bonded well and she’s the most affectionate dog you could imagine.

However she’s terrified to pee/poo outside. Although my enclosed parking spot feels more safe to do her business (sometimes) and is praised with treats when she does!

Futhermore it’s hit/miss whether she’ll attempt to bolt at the sight of other dogs approaching. She’s increasingly attempting to run away from any sight of dogs or humans. And she‘s increasingly rejecting being on a lead/collar/harness. She may jump out of her skin until she’s free and has run loose on my local roads a dozen times. Thankfully I live in a quiet housing estate and able to calmly catch her.

But I feel exhausted and overwhelmed. We just returned home after she got loose outside my home, twice, and I feel like I’m ruining any progress previously made. I’m currently hiding in bed after having a daft cry. I did so well for my previous dog but I wasn’t prepared for such a wild neurotic pup. And Id therefore be very grateful for any and all possible advice please. Thank you in advance for your help.

I have a 6-month-old male Silken Windhound. He’s very sweet, a bit soft/avoidant with other dogs, not dominant at all.

I’m planning to add a Saluki puppy in a few months (around a 6-month age gap), and I have two options from the breeder:

- black & tan male

- dark grizzle female

I’m trying to decide between these two specific setups:

- male + male

- male + female

Context:

- Structured home (no free access to furniture, controlled resources, etc.)

- Plan is to neuter later (~2 years), not early

- Goal is calm coexistence, not constant management

What I’d really like to hear from people who’ve actually lived it:

If you’ve had two male sighthounds:

- How did things change during adolescence?

- Any real tension or fights, or mostly fine?

- Did it improve with maturity or stay something to manage?

If you’ve had male + female:

- Noticeably easier?

- Any downsides compared to two males?

Bonus (if relevant):

- Did having a softer/submissive first dog make things easier or harder with a second male?

I’m trying to understand patterns from real setups. Thanks.

hey guys! my partner and i are taking home our beautiful 3 month old afghan hound week after next:)

i’m in school for dog grooming rn, but i can’t find any recommended products for an afghans coat. i was recommended isle of dogs and hydra but looking to get some feedback from sighthound owners themselves:) also looking for recommendations on brands for brushes and combs and such. i have your basic pin brush, slicker brush and greyhound comb (as well as clippers which i have for work).

i’ve never once groomed an afghan nor have i ever seen one in person besides dog shows, and specifics as far as reccomended products has proved to be quite difficult to find. any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. thanks so much!!
