Help! I am completely new to this. Can anyone help me out with what does the amber/orange light indication mean? And what causes it?! And any solution to that?
what is the best server hardware vendor (opinionated?)
I want to ask the community - what is the best server hardware vendor.
the company I currently work for uses primarily Dell and HP, but I've also heard from vendors like SuperMicro and more.
What are the people's experience with all the vendors, and which one do you advice if you'd start all over again?
Supermicro server not staying on dhcp.
First off, I am super new to servers, and know literally nothing about using them but am definitely trying to learn. I was tasked at my volunteer position with setting up ipmi on this supermicro A1SRi-2758F because I know linux, and doing it consists of using linux. I don't know what im doing. I did some stuff with ipmitool in debian, including "ipmitool raw something something", So when I go into the bios, I go under ipmi, go to BMC network configuration, then switch Configuration Address source from [Unspecified] to [DHCP], Then i save and reboot, it goes back to [Unspecified]. Ive been trying to find stuff on Google but I don't even know what to look for, and the random stuff ive tried hasn't worked, so I might as well ask the smart reddit people for help.
I've started going to a local place a lot. I want to do something more than tip
Is there any way besides money I can express my appreciation?
Title: Need H100 GPU access for 1-hour benchmark testing (paid, negotiable)
Hey everyone,
I’m working on an early-stage startup and we urgently need short-term access to an NVIDIA H100 GPU for some simple benchmark testing.
We only need about 1 hour of usage to validate performance and finalize some internal decisions.
If anyone here has access through your company, lab, or even a personal homelab setup, it would be a huge help if you could share or rent it out for a short session.
We’re open to paying for the time, and the price is completely negotiable.
This is time-sensitive for us, so if you can help, please contact me immediately via DM or comment below.
If you know someone who might have access, even a referral would help a lot.
Thanks in advance 🙏
My dad has this old ram module but we never figured out what it was from, can anyone help id this piece of history
What to do with this
I recently won an auction that included this server that at least according to the inventory list is a stonefly NAS appliance. I could not find any model number. Since it was an auction they ripped out all the hard drives. At the very least I know it has 64gb of RAM. I’ve only ever used old desktops as servers and never had a no kidding server. What kind of hard drives or SSDs do I buy for it and how would I even connect to the thing.
Is it even worth toying around with? I have a mini pc proxmox machine that I run some light weight stuff but nothing that really demands any real compute power.
Inherited an old Dell PowerEdge T340. Worth selling/parting out?
Hey there!
I recently received this Dell PowerEdge T340 and I am curious how much it may be worth. Is it worth selling on Marketplace or even parting it out for some spare cash? If not, what are some other practical home uses for it?

Hi, I've been searching for a VPN Reseller Panel that actually works, but everything ! find online is either Ul-only, missing backend files, or completely broken. If anyone knows a stable, fully working panel that's been tested and actually runs properly, please share. Thanks.

How Do I Host a Web Server at Home?
I'm positive that this has been asked a Million times already, and for that I apologize.
I need some advice from Smart people in here, and yes believe it or not but even though I'm not a Linux user, I am very open to Host my own Web Server from Linux! So please, if you have any tips on how I should run it, like what's best Nginx or Apache. At the end of this I will be buying a mini-PC from Amazon that will just be running 24/7 and connected via LAN.
How do i access(intrude) to my uni servers??
I am a computer student but never took interest in servers and systems subjects, but something interesting happened today...
One of our professors told me that "u know we have a netflix-like movies streaming platform in one of our uni servers (there are roughly 6-7 servers in our uni)" and he said that our entire staff know about this and we all watch movies and stuff from there.. and he said that "y not you find that streaming site"
Then it clicked my mind that what if i access that server and i took the scrnshot of that streaming platform, and then i'll send it to my professor and make my rizzz😭
But i genuinely don't know how do i access my uni servers and specifically that one server where this thing is placed 😐
i even don't know that can i access this from my home or i have to access that through my uni's internet😐😐 but i desperately want to do this so i came up and searched for this subreddit hoping that maybe some knowledgeable guys guide me..
and am very sharp and curious at learning new things 🙃
thanks for reading this long though...🙌🙌 waiting for my angel...😭🫢
Note: It's only for learning purposes. i have no piracy-break intentions at all. i just wanna see that thing.. and if my professor told me to do that, then i am sure it should solve without any piracy-break.
Which of these 2 server CPUs is better for handling traffic + faster?
Please which CPU is better for traffic at the same time + faster? Note that sometimes current server CPU reaches 100% when there's much traffic.
Current server CPU: Intel Xeon Platinum 8260 @ 2.40GHz with 8 vCPU
Offered server CPU: 2x Intel Xeon 4110
Note the 8 vCPU limit on the current server.
Possible to turn a computer tower into an entertainment center?
If this type of question is not allowed, I apologize, but I don't know how else to word it...
I'm trying to use an old Windows XP computer tower in combination with the livingroom TV, to allow family to view saved local content, but also with ability to access Netflix, YouTube, etc.
The thing is, I don't want to use one of those ridiculous box things that requires internet connection and subscriptions and sends all your data to big companies who want to destroy your dreams.
In simplest terms, something that will just hide all of the rest of the operating system and files, and only allow them to boot up directly to a simple screen with options to choose the files or streaming service; no access to system settings or office suite or anything non-entertainment related, that will potentially brick the system if the kids click the wrong options.
Is this possible or am I just dreaming too big?
I'm building a server out of an old Mac Mini. MXLinux, Fedora Server or Debian?
Hi all. I'm building a server out of an ancient (2011) MacMini. It's my first time attempting this. I plan to run things like, jellyfin, pihole, nextcloud, and a vpn. Which of these would you guys recommend. For context I'm maxing out the MacMini with 16GB of RAM and Dual Drives (SSD+HDD backup) 2.5 TB total. I'll also probably be utilizing a DAS enclosure for movies. I currently run fedora on my workstation. Also considering MXLinux because of the Age Verification/ SystemD stuff. I'm an entry level IT tech so I guess my question is is it better to learn the old-school basics first through Debian based distros or are RPM, Podman etc more applicable now a days?
Update: I've ruled out MXLinux for headless stuff.
Requirements for GPU hosting
I am sort of out of my depth and have lost faith in my IT team. I need some guidance info on what server rooms can handle.
Let me try and get everything out. I lead an AI team that is in a small division of a much larger company. When I first started IT wanted nothing to do with my Linux GPU "Servers" as they didn't know Linux and also insisted it wasn't a "server" it was just a machine (not here to argue that, tryin to get people to understand what I have been working with--call it Macaroni for all i care). Our first device was an oversized tower with a GPU. Not much, but got us rolling.
We've grown and got a second GPU "machine" Modest, but now we have dual GPUs and a rack mounted device (2U or 4U form factor), so rather than sitting in someone's office, this is more of a dedicated rack "Server' and sits in a dedicated server room that I am not allowed access too. Not a huge deal, I have iDrac and all that so I don't need physical access. When "IT" was installing it, they couldn't get it to stay up for more than 24 hours. Recommend we send it back eat the money loss and buy their recommended Windows Machine. I worked with the vendor, found a config error its been rolling for 2 years straight with no hiccups for about 6 users.
Now we are going Big time. 8xH200 Machine. Company gets word and offers to "help" us order. Now our machine is suddenly placed in the "Company" server room because our server room can't handle it. And wouldn't you know in their server room, we have to use their access and their methods (SLURM/restricted access from THEIR drives, not ours--we are all locked down like fort knox)
So the gist of this long rambling story is: What is required for these Big GPU machines. Is that a valid reason that some "rooms" can't handle them? I used to work in big Semiconductor Fabs, so I have just enough EE experience to be dangerous, but I can't for the life of me figure out why we have to go to a different server room unless ours is already dangerously overloaded or at capacity, in which case, that's a whole OTHER problem. Can anyone provide some guidance as I'm pushing back pretty hard and this is basically a $300k machine commandeered by another division. Needless to say people ARE NOT happy and I need to work from the facts. **@#(%^@#)%* Office politics. The reason I've lost trust with the IT team is that can't even give me a straight answer on connections (up/down) let alone install requirements. Its a FUBAR x 11
My Machines:
1st 16GB RTX 5000 (from memory right now) Xeon Tower (950W)
2nd 2 x 24GB RTX A5000 (again from memory) Dual Xeon 2U Form Factor Dual Non-redundant Power Supply, 1600W @ 220V
New
8 x H200 PSU as Octo,Fully Redundant (4+4),Hot-Plug MHS PSU,3200W MM HLAC (ONLY FOR 230-240 Vac)
Am I being sold a line of good here or what is the problem. It looks like the connections for my current and new would be the same (both 220AC--or is there something new with the 230/240 my understanding is it was the same thing).
I stand by to be educated.
