From AirPods Max to Sennheiser HDB 630 — a journey worth sharing

A bit of context first. I previously owned the Soundcore Liberty 4NC (loved it with the piano EQ preset) and still use the AirPods Pro 2 daily — an outstanding in-ear for everything it offers. But I kept feeling the urge to have a proper headphone for a specific ritual: coming home from work, sitting on the couch, pouring a glass of wine or cracking open a beer, and just listening to some of my favorite albums. Simple as that.

To fill that gap, I bought the first-gen AirPods Max (USB-C) last week. The build is undeniably premium and robust, ANC is excellent, and for anyone inside the Apple ecosystem the convenience factor is real. The sound is very good — but it didn't impress me. The negatives piled up: the weight, the complete lack of EQ options, the ridiculous case, battery life, and long-term discomfort. After weighing the pros and cons, I returned it this morning.

Enter the HDB 630.

I'll be honest — I was nervous. Comments like "boring and lifeless sound" and "low volume" weren't encouraging, especially looking at a headphone that, visually, seems fragile and, let's say, aesthetically... unconventional. I was mentally preparing to return it before it even arrived.

But no review replaces the actual listening experience, and that's what I want to talk about.

The moment I connected it and started playing my favorite tracks, I found myself increasingly captivated. Everything sits exactly where it should in the default tuning — to the point where, after testing several user-shared EQ presets and presets online, nothing beat the stock neutral tuning for me. On certain tracks I'd activate Crossfeed or a gentle Bass Boost, but that was it.

A lot of people say this headphone lacks color or fun. Honestly? I think they're confusing neutral with boring. Think of a Margherita pizza: few ingredients, simple, but when done right, everything is in perfect harmony. That's exactly what the HDB 630 sounds like to my ears — simple, natural, and cohesive. There's something quietly enchanting about something straightforward done well.

The not-so-great parts:

- The aesthetics won't win any awards. I feel like a Cyberman from Doctor Who wearing it.
- It looks fragile. I genuinely hope it isn't.
- Transparency mode is basically nonexistent.

The pleasant surprises:

- ANC works perfectly well for my needs. Yes, it's not Apple or Sony — but frankly, if you're buying a Sennheiser, ANC isn't the reason.
- The carry case is excellent, even if it's quite large.
- The BTD 700 dongle deserves a special mention: that little thing integrates seamlessly with the HDB 630 and genuinely elevates the listening experience.
- Comfort is ok. Sessions never feel fatiguing.
- The volume? Yes, it's not the loudest headphone out there — but it's sufficient.
- The parametric EQ is a fantastic addition — something the audiophile community had been asking for and genuinely deserved. In skilled hands, I have no doubt it’s an incredibly powerful tool. I’ll be honest about my own limitations here: I keep my adjustments minimal and build on top of presets shared by the community. But here’s the thing — 95% of the time I end up going straight back to the default tuning anyway. Yes, the default tuning is that good.
- I also really appreciate the overall Sennheiser experience as a package. You buy the headphone and everything you need to get the most out of it comes in the box: the headphone itself, the dongle, the cables, the case. The full experience, right out of the gate. Some companies — cough Apple cough — could really learn a thing or two from that philosophy.

Bottom line:

I'm very satisfied, even though it wasn't cheap — and in my country (Brazil), this headphone is quite expensive. At that price point, I do think some aspects could have been more refined. But what brought me here was sound quality, and on that front I have zero complaints.

Coming home from work, sitting on the couch, opening a beer, and listening to Moving Pictures has never felt this good.

---

As a side note, I'm still curious to expand my small collection with something that offers a different character. Right now I have my eye on the PX8 S2, but I can't find it for sale in Brazil yet — only the original PX8 (absurdly expensive here) and the PX7 S2E (roughly half the price). Maybe someday. For now, I'm absolutely happy.

Your experience may have been completely different from mine — you might agree with a lot of what I said, or disagree with most of it, and that's perfectly fine. I'll be the first to admit that my exposure to high-quality headphones is more limited than I'd like it to be. At the end of the day, audio is deeply subjective, and these are simply my impressions of these two headphones. I hope they're useful to someone out there who is considering picking up either one of them.

Sennheiser Momentum 5 Wireless

Sennheiser Momentum 5 are coming soon. 🤩

It’s confirmed, Momentum 5 Wireless are here.

Found it 2 hours ago in the newest update (1.4.0) of the Sennheiser Smart Control Plus application for iOS but couldn’t post the pictures for some reason and on time and had to redo everything. Enjoy the new pictures in Dark/Light mode.

My update post from few hours ago:

5th time's the charm?

Still love the sound of these. While MTW5 seems to be right around the corner (the leak came out literally a few hours after I placed the order), I kinda expect these to go the same way all my previous Sennheiser TWs have, and I'll just upgrade when it happens. And, well, if _these_ happen to be the ones that last... they're definitely not a bad pair to get "stuck" with.

I'll be sure to use them a lot. Absolute sound king in the price category... while they work xD

Should I buy momentum 4 right now or wait for momentum 5 to release so that the 4 price decreases?

Genuine question btw.

I am getting it for ₹19900 ( $213 )

I snuck a DIY mic into an HE-1 demo... and used the data to EQ my LCD-X.

So, I finally got my 45 minutes with the Sennheiser HE-1 at Hifiklubben in Copenhagen yesterday. I’ll keep the subjective "audiophile poetry" short: it really is that good. The biggest surprise wasn't just the clarity, but the bass separation. The way the low end stays completely distinct from the mids and highs is something I haven’t heard anywhere else. It’s an amazing system that just makes you want to keep listening.

https://preview.redd.it/orz7ue56yswg1.png?width=1600&format=png&auto=webp&s=3b8d8814e2e583c41dfdb781cec7314218e015bd

But I didn't just go there to listen.

I managed to "sneak in" a DIY in-ear microphone setup to take some on-head measurements. While I was at it, I also grabbed data for the LCD-5 and HD800s they had hooked up. My goal was to see if I could use that HE-1 baseline to "fix" my Audeze LCD-X (2021) and see how close I could get.

The Comparison & EQ (A technical heads-up)

I’ve spent the last 24 hours tweaking the filters. I’ve attached the REW shot below, but a very important disclaimer: these are raw, on-head, uncompensated measurements. This is exactly how the sound is hitting my ear canal. Because they are uncompensated, these results can only be used to directly compare headphones measured on the same head with the same mic. They aren't meant to be "industry standard" graphs, but as a relative comparison for EQing one to the other, they are incredibly useful for my specific anatomy.

  • Blue line: The HE-1 (The target)
  • Red line: My LCD-X with the new EQ profile
  • White line: The stock, un-EQ'ed LCD-X

https://preview.redd.it/9mlitc80yswg1.png?width=1582&format=png&auto=webp&s=c0f443d85e9faa34a4e367ec89f3eebb9d207231

Look at how that red line tracks the HE-1 through the sub-bass and mids. I ran the filters through Crinacle’s hangout tool to double-check the simulation, and for my ears, it’s a revelation.

The "HE-1 Style" Filters for LCD-X (Pre-amp: -9 dB):

Type Frequency (Hz) Gain (dB) Q
Low Shelf (LSQ) 40 2.0 0.71
Low Shelf (LSQ) 100 3.0 0.71
Peak (PK) 1500 -2.0 3.5
Peak (PK) 2500 -2.0 3.0
Peak (PK) 3000 2.0 3.0
Peak (PK) 3300 3.0 3.0
Peak (PK) 3600 7.0 2.0
Peak (PK) 5600 -1.0 5.0
High Shelf (HSQ) 13000 2.5 0.71

The Result?

Honestly? It sounds very, very, very good. It captures that effortless clarity and separation that blew me away with the HE-1. Tonally, it’s closer to that €60k experience than I ever thought possible with a "normal" headphone.

The only problem? Now that it sounds this good, I don't want to take it off—and gods, do I wish the LCD-X was lighter. My neck is the only thing standing between me and "endgame" bliss right now.

A Few Bonus Measures

Because they were right there and hooked up, I couldn't resist grabbing measurements for the Audeze LCD-5 and Sennheiser HD800S as well. I’ve attached a second REW shot just for comparison. The mapping is: Green is the LCD-5 and Pink is the HD800S. (I won't detail how they sound—just wanted to share the raw data).

Looking for a desktop amp to drive my seinheiser 560S's from my PC, and plug my bass into.

Not very knowledgeable about this stuff, but I'm looking for a clean solution to playing bass at my desk, as well as upping my audio setup a bit for gaming and music listening. I figure a desktop amp with both 6.35 mm and 3.5mm inputs would work. Not very sure, but I figure possibly a DAC would also do the job?

My uneducated budget is under $50, as I've seen a bunch of normal desktop amps around that much, and I'm not looking for something that is finely tuned, but I really have no clue how much it costs for something more specific like this. Also, I'm in the US.

I may have a headphone addiction...

Left to Right: Sony WH-1000XM6, Sennheiser HDB 630, AirPods Max 2

I had Bose QC Ultra 2 HP previously but ended up returning them and got the Sennheiser HDB 630 instead and … wow … they sound amazing. Music just sounds better with them. I think they look kind of cheap, though.

I’m not using the bluetooth dongle that came with it and have no custom EQs setup as now. I’m only using the ones that are pre-setup on the app.

(The reasons I returned the Bose QC U2 were: (1) constant connection drop on my Macbook and (2) the ear fatigue I got after using them for just two hours, and that was due to the interior hard rubber surrounding the ear cups. If you have smaller ears however, you may not get this fatigue as your ears may not even touch it.). They have a great ANC though, almost as good as XM6, and the music after you play with EQs, sounds closer to the HDB 630 than XM6 or APM2.

AirPods Max 2 have the best ANC, even better than the Sony’s XM6. I’ve tested them on an indoor bathroom with an above ceiling air vent and the APM2 blocked the vent’s humming noise more than XM6’s.

Sony XM6 still sound the best in Cinema mode when watching a movie or a show. It’s like you have that surround sound coming from your headphones.

AirPods Pro 3 (not pictured) still fit me better than AirPods Pro 2, which came loose frequently particularly the left one, though the right eventually did as well.

Aaaaand, I just bid and won on an open box of Sony WH-1000XM4 HP's on eBay.

I really need help...

IE 600 eartips

An ear doctor once told me I have “weirdly shaped” ear canals.. I don’t know what he meant but I have always had trouble fitting any type of in ear earbuds in. Sometimes the left fits perfectly and right doesn’t sometimes it’s the other way around. With the IE 600s I loved how small they were and thought they would fit no problem but same old issue, left fits ok, and none of the 6 different silicone or foam tips given with fit correctly in my right ear. Smallest ear tip is too small and largest too big and medium is just small enough that there’s no secure fit and earbud keeps moving around and I have to keep readjusting. So please any expert that knows the best and most universally fitting aftermarket ear tips, please share recommendations because I love these little things and want to keep using them.

Just picked up the new Sennheiser CX 80U (USB-C) – First impressions are... okay?

My AirPods Pro started acting up with that dreaded static sound a while back, so I’ve been on the hunt for some budget USB-C wired buds for the last few months. I was honestly leaning toward EarPods until I first saw these online about two months ago. I’ve been checking for an India release ever since, and since they finally launched here yesterday, I jumped on them immediately.

As soon as the news hit, I ordered them immediately. They arrived this morning, and after spending some time with them, here’s the breakdown:

The Good:

  • Price: Super affordable for Sennheiser (got them for ₹1,790).
  • Build: They feel decent, and obviously, I don't have to worry about charging them.
  • Clarity: They aren't "bad," just very neutral and clear.

The Not-So-Good:

  • Missing Volume Buttons: This is the biggest letdown for me. I really feel like a modern pair of USB-C buds should have volume controls, but these only have a single-button remote.
  • Volume: They aren't as loud as I expected.
  • The Sound Signature: If you’re looking for bass or a "punchy" feel, these aren't it. They feel a bit thin compared to what I’m used to.

Verdict: They are "good enough" for the price, but they definitely won't be replacing the AirPods experience for me. I’ll keep these as a reliable, non-rechargeable backup for travel or work, but I'll definitely be buying another pair of AirPods Pro in the future for my daily drivers.

Anyone else grab these yet? Curious to hear if it’s just me wanting more bass!

listening songs on youtube could be a good solution for people complaining about the fact that songs in sennheiser 560s feels thin on it when listening on apple music etc

i know its really annoying sometimes when hearing songs on sennheiser 560s when songs sounds thin so i would really suggest that kind of people to use youtube when listening to music as i felt that it really solves the problem and i know the quality won't be the same as that of some premium apps like apple music etc but atleast its really a decent experience

Graphite is so clean!

Got mine yesterday and have barely took them off! They sound amazing for music, games, and calls (not sure how it sounded on the other end though).

Took me a few days to settle on a colour before I ordered but really glad I went with the Graphite. It seems a lot bolder in person, whereas with the images online it was sometimes difficult to see the difference between this and the standard Black.

XLR Bluetooth input

Excuse me if this is a very dumb question, this just came to mind as I’m wanting to get the hd 480 pro for home and office use. I have the hd 490 pro and love them for gaming, would love to throw in the 480 as well and then potentially use them at my work office. I see some people make a Bluetooth xlr input, has anyone used one of these on these types of headphones and still had solid audio output if connecting to their phone? Could always use the wire but the option for wireless at work intrigues me.
