TIL Sarasota employers brought in 1,000+ indentured H-1B workers. Anyone have a good read on tech in Sarasota and why so many employers seem to only want foreign labor?

These are not specialized roles. QA analyst. BI developer. Systems analyst. Oracle developer. Every new Sarasota-area grad I know with a CS degree is either fighting for scraps locally or commuting to Tampa.

So what exactly is going on? Are these jobs even hitting Indeed before the LCA gets filed? Or is the "couldn't find a qualified American" box getting checked as a formality?

Anyone here work at these places? 'd love to hear it.

Ew.

I just moved to Sarasota from the Midwest (my partner lives here, apologies for more traffic), and I've been marveling at all of the new, beautiful, interesting flora and fauna. A Sandhill Crane walked within five feet of me last weekend. The blooming flower sticks in everyone's yards are fantastic.

Then there have also been the roaches. I've battled a few myself, or pointed out some to my partner, who is always down to help 💪

There's been an icky smell coming from the bathroom closet the last couple days, and that's where we store one dehumidifier, which we haven't used in a few weeks. I started to pull it out to investigate and clean it, when in a flash the smell got so strong. I thought "mouse" but what I revealed was *dead lizard*, so.

🦎☠️💔🤢🙂‍↔️🆘

…………………………….

💪 just came home… 🦸👋🦎🪦😢

Ukrainians/Russians/Eastern Europeans at Bayfront Park?

I live downtown and often walk through Bayfront Park. Last night I felt like I was in another country as I heard so many other people around me talking in a language I believe to be Ukrainian, Russian or another Eastern European language. Even the nice folks that have their little setup pushing the Bible had it in a foreign language. I'm not complaining at all, just curious if anyone has some insight?

Fed up with overpriced medical charges with the SMH system

Last month I had a pretty decent injury to my fingers where I was pretty sure I broke at least one of them. So like most people would do, I went to an urgent care facility that took my insurance, one run by Sarasota Memorial Hospital. I spent a total of 3+ hours waiting to be seen by a doctor, and when I did it was for maybe 5 minutes. She sent me down the hall to get an x-ray done, and then had to wait another 30 minutes for the results. It turned out to be a bad sprain with partial ligament tear, but no break. The doc came back in, told me that there was no nurse available, so she would bandage me up. She then, very clumsily I might add, put my finger into a metal split and wrapped it with ciban tape, recommended I see a surgeon affiliated with them for follow up, and sent me on my way.

A few days ago I finally got the bill, and you won't believe the charges. After deductions fir what the insurance company would allow, I personally still oved over $1,500. Yep, $1,500 for a sprained finger. This is why people hate private insurance companies and Healthcare in this country. Even with insurance you get charged out the wazoo for even small things, so many people don't even go to the doctor anymore - You just can't afford it.

Thanks so much, SMH.

Stop accepting your doctors bullshit

I am not a doctor. I am not a lawyer. Do not take this as medical advice.

I am tired of the lies and bullshit from these doctors offices who advise that you that HAVE to have a consultation whether telehealth or in person appointment to GIVE YOU results of a test you’ve had at their office… I’ve been recently through a massive load of phones calls, emails, portal back and forth all because I have a disease the doctor and I both know about. It’s been documented since 2005 and we went through the same crap last year. However they just told me they would not release the results for me to view unless I did another appointment with their office and, you guessed it, charged me another copay. Do not blindly fall for this shit. I’m sure it’s happening everywhere, not just Sarasota but I’ll start small. Demand your records. Demand your test results. It is a hipaa violation for them to withhold that information based on them demanding a follow up. Yes some things are more serious than others. Yes this may be the first time you’ve heard bad news and having that appointment will suck but is necessary but if you’ve been living with this condition for decades and know the next steps for procedure/tests… fuck these predatory asswipes.

Spirit Mediums

Hi! Has anyone had any positive experiences with any local spirit mediums? I’ve never been to one before and have always been a bit curious.

Thanks!

Seeking reliable car service/shuttle recommendations for TPA to Sarasota (Friday, May 1st)

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a reliable, professional shuttle or car service to pick up my mom from Tampa International Airport (TPA) and drive her to Sarasota next Friday, May 1st. She’s landing around 5:00 PM.

A few specific details:

No Uber/Lyft: She’s not comfortable with rideshare apps and specifically requested a traditional car service or shuttle.

Language (The "Long Shot"): Her English is limited. It would be a huge plus if there are any drivers in the area who speak Polish or Hungarian. This isn't a strict requirement, but it would definitely help her feel more at ease during the long drive!

Looking for something door-to-door that is punctual and easy to coordinate.

Does anyone have a "go-to" company or a specific driver they trust for the TPA-SRQ route?

Thanks in advance for any leads!

Lakewood Ranch Soccer Tournament Mid-June, where to airBnB with three kids?

I would like to be within a 20-25 minute drive. However, I am also considering staying close to the water if it’s worth it.

Looking for clean and/or non-shady area. Walking distance to restaurants is preferable but not necessary.

Thank you.
