student housing router
i am moving to my new student accommodation soon. i am in contact with the current tenants, who have a wifi arrangement with the lower apartment.
they say they have a router and an ethernet cable through the window, and simply pay the dad from downstairs. i have worked out the same thing, just need the router (the cable is staying).
i’ve been searching and they all seem quite expensive, so considering we are only staying for one year, what is a good student friendly router to purchase?
thanks
Router/connection suggestion
Hey guys, just moved into a basement apartment. Landlord was kind enough to share his Internet via ethernet cable connected to his Cogeco router's LAN port. (1000Mbps cable internet)
Need suggestions on type of router / connection I would need to make wireless connection for my apartment. I have wifi 6 capable PC, phone tv and few other devices.
Do I have to make an access point or repeater mode? I would like to setup my own network SSID.
Thanks in advance for suggestions.
How often do you end up replacing your router?
It's been my experience that once a router reaches about five years of age, it starts losing connections, running slow, etc.
At least that's what's happened to me in the past, and now five years later it's happening again. I'm rebooting it fairly frequently just to keep it going. So I'm thinking it's time.
Is five years or so considered the typical life expectancy of a router? Thanks.

Kaysus KS-WR 3600 new/alternate firmware
Hello! I would like to know, if there is any new, or alternate firmware, or solution for the Kaysus KS-WR 3600 router (Or alti-link w736pro) since firm. ver. 1.0.5.9.1 has a very high risk vulnerability.
Alternative connection on a FritzBox
Hey guys,
So i got the following problem:
The house was built around 1970. The cables are as old aswell. We get regularly connection errors resulting in complete internet failure up to 80 times a day.
Now i called our provider quite some times and in the end the service technician stated that, as i already said, the copper cables are old and not suitable for VDSL and high speed internet. Now we are planning to renovate the house in the near future but until then we are stuck with an occasionally non existing internet connection.
We are using a FritzBox 7590 v8.20. This router offers an option to use an alternative connection if the main connection fails. Explanation is quite easy to understand, so i went, bought a SIM-stick (DLink DWR-932), made a separate cheap contract for a sim-card and connected it to the router. I went into the settings and changed them accordingly.
The incident report said that the main connection failed and ist activating the alternate connection but.... thats it. The router wont actually switch to it. It waits until it can reconnect to the main connection and will tell me that the main is succesfully reconnected and will switch back, only to loose the connection a minute later and doing it all over again.
I tried troubleshooting for well over 2 months now but it just doesnt want to work whatsoever.
Disabled Pin-Lock for the Sim.
Made sure the router actually recognised the stick.
Tried different settings (Instant switch to the main/alternate connection or timed like a minute or five minutes later.
I tried a different sim-stick (DLink DWM220W) but the same problem.
Anyone here with a possible solution apart from restart your router shenanigans?
Help would be greatly appreciated.
