I had planned on doing the ~12 mile James Irvine/Miners Ridge/Fern Canyon loop this week, but it looks like that is a no-go since one of the stairs are closed for reconstruction between James Irvine & Fern Canyon.

I'm not sure I trust my Honda Fit to make it across the potholes & stream crossings to get to the Fern Canyon parking.

Thinking about timing, would it be better to do:

  • A 14 mile out and back to Fern Canyon via Miners Ridge, or
  • A 8-10 mile romp around James Irvine & Miners Ridge?

In other words, I can either do James Irvine or Fern Canyon. I can't do both. Thoughts?

Visiting the Redwoods

I'm visiting the northern redwoods next week in the Crescent City area and am wondering what the crowds might like in the parks. Is this a busy time of year? Do I need to plan for hikes and parking?

Redwood - Food options

Just got back from a 2 night camping trip near the Redwoods around Crescent City and I wanted to share some solid food options since it was a bit difficult to find good info beforehand.

We ended up discovering two places that were absolutely worth it:

Historic Hiouchi Cafe (near the Hiouchi Visitor Center)

This spot was a lifesaver for breakfast and lunch. Super heavy portions and exactly what you want before or after a long day of hiking.

Raliberto's Taco Shop (in Crescent City) - Everything we tried was great. Tacos, tortas, burritos were what we tried, generous portions. Perfect if you are starving after hiking.

If you are camping closer to Crescent City, there are also plenty of familiar options like Denny’s, Taco Bell and for coffee Dutch Bros and Starbucks.

Hope this helps anyone planning a Redwoods trip!

Brookings to Jedidiah & Fern Canyon?

Hello, looking for some advice. I'll be staying in Brookings, OR. Can Jedidiah & Fern Canyon be all done in one day or should I go seperate days? We want to see Boy Scout trail, Grove of Titans, Stout Grove. Also, Fern Canyon, Ladybird Johnson, Big Tree loop. We'll be there for a week. wondering if we should split up both locations in 2 days rather than be rushed for time in one day. I really don't know what to expect. Also, can you advise some other scenic areas, trails. We're a pretty fit couple looking to take in some big trees.
