We had a blast this month creating and performing puppet shows! We even had a few people come out from Reddit and 1 amazing Redditor made and performed a puppet show last night as part of our closing showcase.

I just finished my first short film Deep Dive (stop-motion / 3D hybrid), and it was also my first time building a character using needle felting.
Overall
I really loved the material. Under lighting it reads as very soft and “alive,” which worked great for animation. It gives a kind of organic presence that’s hard to fake with smoother materials.
Unexpected problem - staining
I used a bit of water to set the felt in place so it wouldn’t shift during animation.
After a while, red-brown spots started appearing on the hands of the puppet.
Pretty sure it was a reaction between the water and the metal armature inside (rust/oxidation).
If you’re doing something similar:
wrap/seal the wire really well before felting, especially in thin areas like fingers.
Silhouette issues (in post)
The texture that makes felt beautiful also made it tricky-edges aren’t very clean.
In some shots it was harder to get a clear silhouette, especially against similar backgrounds.
Would love to hear if others ran into similar issues with armatures + moisture.
Pics show some of the process + puppet.
If you’re curious, the film is now online: https://vimeo.com/1187770376
I’m heading to London in September and would love to see as many shows as possible that have puppetry in them (WestEnd or others in London). I’m a professional puppeteer from Finland and travelling alone.
Definitely would love to see primarily shows for adults, but family friendly is also welcomed. I’ve heard that in Totoro there are puppets and that’s on my list. Warhorse apparently is only until July and I’m really sad to miss that.
Super new to making puppets but I had to make a walking talking gorilla puppet w/removable hairpiece for a play. I’m not great at painting but I liked my design a lot plus it’s light enough for my students to use.
Today's Substack newsletter will post at 2 pm Eastern. Thanks in advance for checking it out and considering a free subscription.
I found it and bought it on Vinted. It is a living puppet. I can not find anything out about him beside those Information .
Weird that comic book geeks would also write and perform puppet shows about comic books, but it happened! Created and performed by Bread Box Theatre.
My kid is super into puppets and I wanted to set up a kind of studio for him using an iPhone for taking the video that live streams directly to an iPad that he views wiggle making the video. Is there an app for this or is it something that’s built into IOS devices?
Thanks in advance for any recs!
