Gamble Find: c1894 Bicycle 808 Brown Cupid Back

Bought a lot of about 40 decks with limited knowledge. Seller was unwilling to provide more information or photos due to them already boxing it up for shipment. decided to buy them anyway on a gamble, not sure what I would be exactly getting.

Although the decks in interest were in worse condition than what the photos provided shown, there was a gem.

For any of the antique Bicycle card collectors out there, you might recognize the above. A original Cupid "Sod" design that was produced between 1894 to 1896. "Sod" is a nickname the community has granted the original design of the back. The designs had to be redrawn ever so often due to the steel plates wearing due to use -- usually there is very small changes that can be found, but sometimes there were major design elements that they decided to draw differently. For cupid, the original design has the bicycle being ridden on top of grass (or "Sod"), while the design shifted to a simple crosshatch that was used from ~1896 onwards.

Unfortunately, this deck has seen better days. The condition of it is pretty rough and appears to have been well loved and played with. There are many cards with creases, a few with missing corners, corners have been eroded down, and unfortunately the 8 of Spades was no where to be found. 51 cards with no joker or box. However, it is a very rare example of this design, especially sporting the elusive brown color.

These might have been used at a common card party back in the day, where the Cupid backs were favored to be used to play Hearts. Whose to say? Either way, a fun piece of history!

A glimpse of my collection.

This is only about half of the total decks I have. I’m curious to see if there are any decks I have in common with someone!

Bicycle playing cards in Thalia

I bought these at my local Thalia store here in Germany. These are the first decks of cards I haven't ordered online. Where do you buy playing cards?

Anyone familiar with these courts/jokers?

My mom found this deck at a thrift shop, back is shown. It was made as a promotional item for a solar energy company, but the quality isn’t bad. Very stiff and springy but not in a bad way. I looked into the “playing cards on demand” company but couldn’t find much on the face design. I did find a picture of the whole deck which I included.

Anyway, does anyone know where the court/joker designs are originally from? They’re not super unique but I haven’t seen these exact ones before, notably the colors and the kings’ faces. And the joker is one of my all time favorites.

Thanks for any info

Aristocrats or Bees?

I read somewhere that Aristocrats are nearly as good as Bees for table work, is it true?

I’ve never had Aristocrats but Bees are my favourite. To the people whove used them, is the feel similar to Bees or more closer to Rider backs?

Ink fading on Copags

I've seen people saying that ink of Copags fade over months with frequent use. Can anyone recommend other brands with plastic cards where the ink wont get scraped off easily with constant shuffles and a rough table surface?

Any Value?

My late grandfather had these sealed decks of playing cards. Are these worth anything?

I want to find a manufacturer of playing cards for my card game here in Philippines

Where should I start if I were to find a manufacturer here in Philippines? Let me know your experience in dealing with these manufacturers and their MOQ. It can be within or outside PH, whichever is convenient.
