Played Perfect Dark (Remaster) and Perfect Dark Zero back to back over the weekend

and I enjoyed Perfect Dark Zero a lot more. In fact I loved it. Perfect Dark was actually a replay for me, and I feel like it didn't hold up as well as my memory of it. I like the idea of the game, and gameplay flows nicely until it doesn't. Could be old design or skill issue on my part, but a lot of times where you need to go or what you need to do next wasn't very clear. This combined with bugs and some random softlocks killed my enjoyment of the game at certain points. The overall story and locations were not my favorite either. I will say that Joanna is great though, some of the other characters are cool too, and I liked the plot points with the Skedar.

Meanwhile Perfect Dark Zero fixed most of my issues with the original. Sure the gameplay was more streamlined but it really helped with the pacing and polish of this one. I much enjoyed the cinematic quality of the prequel, and generally preferred the locations, supporting characters (besides Elvis, my GOAT), and overall plot of the game. I also really found the mix of FPS and cover shooter to be neat, even if the transition between the two wasn't always smooth. Jo also still has her wit, and her look is perfect in my opinion.

I believe another big factor in why I loved the second game is that I didn't go into it hoping for just more of the first game, so the switch ups felt fresh to me. I also wasn't weighing it against the contemporary FPS greats like the Halo trilogy and Half-Life 2, just as its own thing. Thoughts on the Perfect Dark vs Zero comparison?

A possible very obscure reference to Perfect Dark Zero in Disney comics

Image taken from Super Picsou Géant 170 (June 2012) - riri fifi loulou menace sur le championnat

Hi everyone! I’m fairly new to Reddit, this is actually my first account, though I’ve been a long-time lurker. I think I’ve stumbled upon something interesting that’s worth sharing. Apologies in advance if this sub is strictly dedicated to the original game.

A few days ago, a friend asked if I knew about a Perfect Dark reference in a Disney comic. I thought he was joking until he showed me a YouTube comment thread. A user named Hero XV is the first person to have found this obscure comic, but people quickly drew parallels between a specific character's design and Perfect Dark Zero. This is incredibly obscure, even Google only returns two results, but fans are convinced it’s an intentional nod for a few reasons:

  • The hairstyle is a dead ringer for Joanna Dark’s look in Zero.
  • The character is named 'Callie,' which sounds remarkably similar to 'Carrington.'
  • The plot involves a massive conspiracy. While it's about football rather than secret agents, the 'conspiracy' vibe fits the franchise perfectly.
  • Both Joanna in Zero (from what I remember) and Callie act almost the same.
  • Rare are no strangers to Disney. I discovered thanks to the Youtube section that Rare worked on two Mickey Racing games : One for the N64 (this game had a GBC port as well) and the other for the GBC. At least, it is sure and certain that Disney acknowleges Rare's existence.

I’m not sure if speculative posts like this are allowed here, but from what I’ve gathered (and what Hero XV mentioned), Disney has a history of slipping video game Easter eggs into their comics. There’s no official confirmation yet, and even Hero XV isn't sure if the character appears in other stories since her appearances are so rare.

Also, reverse searching the image yields no results as of now.

Edit: Callie is, in the story of the comic, a friend of Donald's nephews. As Hero XV said on YouTube, the comic acts as if she has always been there even if it is likely her first appearance. Since we lack any documentation regarding this character, nothing seems certain. Again, Hero XV knows Disney better than I do, for him, it is common for Disney to retcon their story so this could be Callie's first adventure as much as it could not be the case considering that many comicbook are still not translated to this day.

Even so, it begs many questions. There was simply no trace of the character online making it , if intentional, the most obscure tribute to Perfect Dark.

Any random oddities you've noticed in this game?

I was thinking about the G5 Building stage and I realized that the 3rd floor is redundant from a design standpoint. The only thing there is the fire escape and you have to pass by the one on the 2nd floor to get there so if there was a fire, why wouldn't you just go through that one instead?

In the Attack Ship stage Joanna and the others on board seemingly get exposed to the vacuum of space when Joanna opens the hangar doors but there's no explosive decompression and they don't suffocate from lack of oxygen.

PC Port Controller Question

I'd really like to play on a modern controller, but the original aiming system's lookspring is just not my cup of tea.

I notice Aim Lock is an option for the PC port's Mouse controls, but I can't seem to find any such option in there for controllers. Closest I've gotten is centering the normal crosshair, but keeping that centered means disabling Auto Aim, which I'd still like to use.

I imagine it's a long shot, but is there any kind of mod, plugin, .ini tweak, or just a setting I missed for the port that would allow an Xbox controller player to use my super specific set of aiming preferences?
