why the lines at la taq?

no hate, but i’ve tried it twice (breakfast burrito and lunch burrito) and they’re mid to decent. i don’t understand why nearly every evening there’s a line? is there an item on the menu i haven’t tried? it’s just strange when theres an equally good truck will be down the street usually

What are the biggest red flags when renting in Park Slope?

Been looking at apartments around Park Slope lately and I’m realizing how easy it is for a place to look great online while the actual building tells a completely different story. A couple places I toured had obvious patchwork repairs, weird hallway smells, management companies with awful histories or reviews mentioning the same issues over and over. Been cross checking a few buildings on streetsmart too and some of the complaint histories are kind of wild.
For people who’ve rented in the area, what are the biggest red flags you wish you paid attention to before signing a lease?

Push poll by Goldman campaign?

I’ve received a few calls like this over the years. The caller says they are doing a political poll and then after a few questions focuses on one person in the race and asks “if this person did this bad thing” would you vote for them. The “bad thing” questions were aimed at Lander. And it’s a way to dress up legit poll questions as really a negative solicitation This is probably done all the time but I think it’s a shitty thing to do. The person said they were VRI polling I think? After like five minutes I hung up.

Won’t be voting for Goldman.

Massive HVAC in front of Beth Elohim Synagogue - What’s up with it?

Every summer in front of Congregation Beth Elohim on Garfield Place, several street parking spaces are occupied by MASSIVE hvac compressors/air handlers, fencing, and gigantic ducts that hang over the sidewalk to feed air into the synagogue windows.

It’s so incredibly ugly. And loud. Especially in a landmarked district on a corner that’s otherwise entirely residential. Trash and critters like to collect around the fencing too.

Can anyone who is a member of the synagogue share whether this is the long term solution to the building’s cooling issues? I work in construction, and regularly incorporate new HVAC into old, landmarked, complex buildings—it’s not an impossible task. I assume Beth Elohim’s coffers are well funded for such a project. So, is that in the plans or no?

Idiotic family biker injured young teacher

The irony man. I don’t like to post on threads but these bikers are no joke. Saw a guy with a kid on the back of his bike speed so closely past a young lady that he knocked her off her bike. She was down for like a minute. Messed up her arms and hands seemed a little woozy when she finally was up. A few friendly neighbors aided her, said she was heading to work at her Kindergarden (not anymore!) Dad seemed unphased. She cursed him out a little and said why would you do that with a kid on your bike (Truth) & he said something to the effect of don’t curse around my kid. Not even sorry. How bananas!! he moved on so fast. It was impressive that she remained controlled dealing with such a jerk. What if she had been a teacher @ his kids school? Biking in Brooklyn is reliable but people need to get their ish together. No reason to be passing people early in the morning with such speed..with a child?. Is this a biker thing or a Brooklyn thing I can’t tell? That dad is lucky his kid didn’t get hurt. People, be very careful of your proximity to others especially with your families so you don’t end up injuring them or others. I really hate seeing people bike with kids in the back. Its frustrating.
She later made a joke that it all happened before she could have a cup of coffee but at least her dad taught her how to fall. Good sport Lol. Thats going to hurt tomorrow

Noise complaints quiet Pride at Ginger's

Ginger’s announced on its Instagram Monday that “due to ongoing noise concerns in the neighborhood, we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel the majority of our DJ events during Pride this year.”

Last year, to celebrate their 25th anniversary, Brooklyn’s oldest lesbian bar had three Pride events, all with DJs.

Was anyone there last year (as a Pride-goer or a neighbor affected by noise) who’d flag anything notable?

June Hobby Guide: looking to fill some gaps...

I've gotten some great input from Bushwick redditors in the past, so please let me know if you have any hobby happenings (dj classes, mahjong workshops, pickleball clinics etc) coming up that I can include in next month's roundup!

I tend to only include experiences that will really help someone dive into a new hobby and gain enough skill/community to feel equipped to keep going, but you know of shorter experiences (less than 2 hours), I can still include those in the weekly emails.

Trees dropping so many leaves 😩

My block looks cause quasi-apocalyptic right now. So many trees are dropping their leaves, especially the London plane trees (similar to Sycamore). Does anyone know what’s up? I don’t remember this happening in years past.

Can we as people stop claiming black on black crime? it is just crime.

It’s only brought to demonize black people. In addition other races have a wicked history then black people ever had. Also, white have they own gangs and so do Asians but never promoted as serious as black people even though is probably worse.

Why is it impossible to join the Food Coop?

I have been trying to join the food coop for months now. I’ve woken up at midnight and at 6am to try to get a slot, I’ve tried to reach out to members and on instagram. I love the concept so much and was so eager to be part of it when I moved to park slope but now I am close to giving up.

This post is mostly out of curiosity rather than frustration…. why is the process so difficult? Wouldn’t allowing more members to join help distribute shifts more broadly and reduce the workload for everyone?

Sith Lightsaber Sun in Sunset Park

The Sunset was crazy today because of the poor air quality and elevated ozone pollution. On the plus side this made the sun a surreal color. The sun was bloody red. No filter. There were an insane amount of hipsters in the park too.

If you were wondering why Goodiez is closed on Union

This really makes me sad. Goodiez (AKA uncle Louie G’s) on Union is closed for good 🫩 I’m really getting tired of everything closing and turning into gentrified slop or luxury housing.

Permit me please to complain about BRIC and Ice Cream Trucks

Ah springtime, when the foliage returns and park slope is reborn in all its beauty. What a privilege we have to live right next to Prospect Park as well.

And then BRIC arrives and takes a giant shit all over our public space, occupying and blocking out a giant footprint with their ugly chainlink fencing along with black tarpaulin curtains as an added f*ck-you to the locals. Almost as soon as the green returned to the trees plop there they are and won't leave again until -- what, September?

Like, I get that this is a bandshell and what that purpose ought to be but the way these people just occupy the space is really offensive. Is it just me? They've got the fences clear up to the bicycle superhighway, taking over a very large swath of area, denying the public use of our public park.

OK, and then there's my second axe to grind -- the return of the ice cream trucks with their loud and stinking exhaust power generators running all day every day to peddle their $5 soft serve. These things are truly foul and I can't understand how they get a free pass. There's no catalyitic converters or emission controls on these motors and standing next to them one really gets an appreciation for how far we've come with regular motor vehicles' emission control systems. How is it that this is permitted year after year? One would think for the prices they charge these companies could afford to modernize their fleet and replace these petrol generators with natural gas generators or even batteries.

Thank you for listening to my rant.
