Get tired of being accused of not caring for the young people finding it difficult to buy a house. Vivid memories of facing bankruptcy back in the mid eighties when we faced interest rates of nearing 20 percent on our mortgage, three kids in school. It wasn’t all beer and skittles you know. We took any old stuff nobody wanted to put in our new house. No landscaping, no footpaths, no curtains. Bought a second hand TV and fridge for $20 each from parents’ friends. No interest-free deals on stuff back then. Hire-purchase was often the only alternative when something broke down. We were just told life wasn’t meant to be easy! Our parents were struggling still. We expected nothing but a few sheets, towels, a kettle or crockery or cutlery when we married. A lot of the boomers, like me, have helped our kids, are still helping our kids, indeed our grandchildren. It leaves you with a sour taste in your mouth being blamed for what capitalism has done to our society.
