Architect of the Derp World

A pair of experienced derps moved into a tree (12ft) right next to our window last year. The nest was nicely built and was well hidden in between the branches. Having successfully raised their youngs (p1), they returned this spring only to find the missing nest that was blown off by wind gusts in previous winter. Now the couple have made a new nest and settled down again. Not to mention this new nest is so darn hidden that even us had a tough time locating (p2). I'm starting to believe not all mourning dove nests are that stupid. 😂

Grooming and flirting

First time seeing them grooming each other like that as they usually both chill out together and explore my balcony. I thought it looked cute! I've been observing carefully if they are making a nest anywhere on my patio but nothing, they just like stopping by and hanging out.

Today I saw a wood pigeon trying to wing slap a collared dove

Collared doves in my area are absolute menaces, they chase off magpies on a regular basis. Turns out the wood pigeon also had some beef with the dove. I still don't know what was the fuss about.

Meme done by my fiancé 😅

Do your birds stay awake during the night?

I'm hoping some other people with nest cameras can tell me if it's weird that my female barely seems to sleep at night.

The lighting here is IR, so she can't see it, and it shouldn't affect her sleep at all.

Mama & fledgling

This pretty well developed baby was still begging for food in our neighbor's front yard. Since our doves don't nest on our balcony, this one's the first juvenile we have seen this year.
