Most people know Kathua simply as the "Gateway to J&K," but its history is a complex tapestry of warrior clans, ancient republics, and artistic revolutions. Long before it was a modern district, this land was a collection of independent "Hill States" (Pahari Riyasats).

Here is the journey of how those ancient kingdoms became the 11 tehsils we see today.

The Ancient Foundations (The 7 Hill States)---

In the medieval era, the Duggar region was a patchwork of small but powerful principalities. Seven of these were centered in present-day Kathua:

Billawar (Vallapur): One of the oldest. Established around the 7th century by Thakkar Billu, it was the original power center of the region.

Basohli (Vishwasthali): Founded by Thakkar Bisu. While Billawar was the political hub, Basohli became the cultural soul, later birthing the world-famous Basohli Miniature Paintings.

Jasrota (Jasruna): Founded by Raja Jas Dev. For centuries, this was the most dominant state in the district. In fact, until 1921, the entire district was officially called Jasrota District.

Lakhanpur: A strategic "buffer state" founded by Raja Lakhan. It has always been the physical entry point into the hills.

Mankot (Ramkot): Founded by Raja Manik Dev. The Mankotia Rajputs were legendary for their military service.

Bhaddu: Founded by Raja Tokh Pal, giving rise to the Bhadwal clan.

Sumarta: A smaller but distinct territory founded by Raja Sompal, giving rise to the Sumbria clan.

The Great Transition (1800s – 1921)---

The landscape changed during the early 19th century. Under the expansion of the Sikh Empire and later the consolidation of the Dogra Dynasty by Maharaja Gulab Singh, these independent states were unified into a single administrative block.

The Shift: In 1921, the district headquarters moved from the fort-city of Jasrota to Kathua town. This was done primarily because Kathua was more accessible to the plains and the developing trade routes.

Naming Kathua: The name itself is believed to come from the word "Kathaioi"—an ancient republic mentioned by Alexander the Great’s historians—or from the union of three local hamlets (Taraf Tajwal, Manjali, and Bhajwal).

The Modern Era (The 11 Tehsils)---

Today, the legacy of these kingdoms is preserved in the names of the 11 tehsils. While some names remain, others reflect modern growth:

Kathua: The administrative heart.

Hiranagar: Historically part of the Jasrota influence, named after Raja Hira Singh.

Billawar: Still the keeper of the ancient Mahabilvakeshwar temple.

Basohli: Now home to the massive Atal Setu bridge and the Ranjit Sagar Dam.

Bani: The high-altitude "Mini Kashmir" known for its alpine meadows.

Ramkot: The modern avatar of the old Mankot state.

Mahanpur: A key junction connecting the hills to the highway.

Nagri Parole: Known as the agricultural "Rice Bowl."

Dinga Amb: A vital commercial hub on the Dhar-Udhampur road.

Marheen: The fertile border belt.

Lohai Malhar: Carved out to better manage the deep, remote mountainous terrain.

From the ruins of the Jasrota Fort to the GI-tagged Basohli paintings, Kathua isn't just a place you drive through to get to Srinagar or Jammu—its a land where seven kingdoms merged to create a unique Dogra identity.

Anchali(Ainchali): A Living Folk Tradition of Upper Kathua’s Pahadi Culture

In hills of Billawar and Bani, life moves with rhythm of traditions. Among the rich heritage of the region is the Anchali(Ainchali). A religious ballad rooted in the cultural identity of the Pahadi communities of upper Kathua and Chamba region of HP.

Anchali is traditionally performed during festivals, weddings and local fairs. It is not a formally structured dance but a collective expression of happiness, where villagers come together in rhythm, song and movement.

I have gone much deeper on Ainchali on duggarpedia
