Paper Moon, Tokyo

I walked past Paper Moon a few times before actually going in. Every night, those neon lights glowing through the narrow staircase caught my eye. The kind of detail you completely miss during the day on a busy avenue, but at night it feels like the place suddenly appears out of nowhere, like it was always there waiting for the right moment.

When I finally stepped in in one of my last nights, it was empty. Just the owner behind the bar, casually playing on some emulator on his laptop. And yet, the space didn’t feel empty at all. It felt dense in a different way. Like a small universe packed with memories.

It’s hard to explain the charm of this place without sounding vague. It honestly felt like being inside a kind of magic box. Everywhere you look, there are pieces of nostalgia, little details, objects that feel carefully chosen. Not random decoration, but something intentional. Almost like someone built a physical collage of childhood references and personal obsessions.

I went in fully ready to rely on my very basic Japanese and Google Translate. But the owner, in a very natural and unforced way, offered to speak in English, even German. There was something very kind and charming about it.

Drinks-wise, he approached it like a consultation. He asked what I was looking fo: dry or sweet, something light or something with more weight, something familiar or something a bit more exploratory. I usually know exactly what I want and I don’t tend to be easily influenced, but here I let go of that a bit. There was a sense that he genuinely cared and knew what he was doing. I went with his suggestion, whisky and shochu, and he got it exactly right.

It ended up being one of those nights that stays with you and would love to go back and get lost in time again.
