Is panoramic sunroof a real feature or gimmick in real life?

I'm looking at the online configurator, and trying to figure out some details. The cost of the panoramic sunroof is only $750, but I am skeptical it will be a loved feature in real life. I live in the New England's country side. Depending on the season, the top of the car gets covered with snow, ice, leaves, pollen, bird poop, etc. I get that it looks nice in theory and makes interior more welcoming but the sunroof in my current car is always shut and its shade is closed because the glass is cold is winter, the sun is hot in summer, and so on.
What's the hivemind opinion on that particular feature?

North America iX3 Not getting Best Seats!

I am so ANGRY! Getting the M Sport seats is one of my top priorities. I can't get this option, [which is currently in production and offered to European markets] because I live in North America? I placed my M Sport Pro (without M Sport seats) build order on Day 1. The dealer informed me the build can be modified until it goes into production. These [North American] M Sport Pro seats appear to be the standard seats with only different covers. Compared to the European M Sport seats there are No thigh/leg support extensions, No adjustable larger shoulder supports, No adjustable side thigh supports and still NO ventilation!

Let's let BMW USA hear, this decision is missing the mark! (see BMWBlog post) Production for NA is slated to begin late August/September. There is time for our voices to be heard!

Ventilated Seats

I've seen reports that the ix3 will not come with ventilated seats at launch, is that true?

Can't imagine it be that hard to do when the iX has it.

New UK Road trip test between iX3 and Tesla Model Y

Worth watching if you are mulling between these 2 excellent cars.

https://youtu.be/E9xNMXKwJvg?si=4Z-maClmsZRfiMp5

in the comments What Car asks

”If you were driving 600 miles tomorrow, which of these electric SUVs would you take?“

my response is here. Hope it and the video is useful

A) BMW iX3 (It has a longer range & faster charger!) ️
B) Tesla Model Y (The Supercharger prices and software are still unbeatable!)

Interesting question. Excellent video by the way.

As a Tesla Model 3 owner since 2019 (2019 Performance minus and dual motor Highland) who will pick up a BMW iX3 later this month it sounds like I’ve made my decision BUT

  1. For a new owner still inexperienced with EV’s I would still recommend the Tesla. As you illustrated in the video, the Tesla teaches you how to easily resolve issues in an electric car and makes trip planning super easy. I’ve been to Italy 3 times with my Teslas and and 2 trips tp ski resorts in the Alps with no bother at all. The Model 3 is amazingly efficient (just over 4.5 miles per kWh on a London to near Swanage in Dorset and back at 18C yesterday and 4.28 average over 18,000 miles!). The Model Y is less efficient but still exceptional for a car of its size.
  2. Now that I am an experienced EV driver who provides information for other others the MyUrbanCar website, I’m confident the iX3 will be even better. As a balance of range and charge time on both 800 and 400v chargers it is tour de force. One of the first tests I plan to do in the iX3 is London to Inverness with a single 15 minute charge stop. I will need a lot more biological stops than the car. It’s frankly mind blowing that the longest range tests in battery electric cars now easily exceed the furthest you can travel in the UK except in a single north south direction!

The BMW is obviously less efficient esp at high speed. However, one good side of the enormous range is you really can pick the fastest and best value chargers at your leisure within your journey rather than being stuck with that Gridserve price. The Ionity pass takes you to roughly the Tesla price and quite a few networks inc Tesla allow the BMW to hoover up off peak power at a much lower price when you can. It’s worth noting the BMW also lets you choose your preferred networks via the phone app. This means you’ll only be offered expensive networks when you really really have to. Also worth noting that Tesla has got a bit stuck with their battery and charging technology. My Highland model 3 is actually slower at charging than my original 2019 model and takes around 34 or 35 minutes for a 10 to 80% charge. That’s a long way off the pace these days and bordering on poor. It’s one of the reasons I think Tesla Routeplanner suggests lots of quick short stops to distract from the very poor charging performance above 40% battery SOC.. It’s worth remembering though that more stops mean more diversions off your route that all add a lot of additional time and miles to your journey that isn’t actual charging.

in case anyone missed it, there is also a little extra nugget of information in this video. While the BMW is less efficient with the power that’s in the battery it is more efficient at transferring power from a charger into its battery. In the BMW 94.1% of the power you pay for ends up in the car. By contrast the Tesla loses far more with only 87.5% reaching the battery. That’s quite a difference. The BMW is still less efficient driving at higher speeds, but I suspect on a and B roads the BMW will be pretty much level pegging,

I have my own initial review of the IX3 at MyUrbanCar and will be adding road trip and owner tips over the coming year.

Harman Kardon worth it?

The iX3 Neue Klasse is not yet available for test drives here in Canada, but I am trying to nail down the spec ahead of time. The Luxury package (C$4900) includes the upgraded audio. It is the only option in that package I am interested in. Based on previous BMWs, how big is the improvement from the base audio, for a non-audiophile? Worth $4900?

Panoramic Roof Shade - disappointment

Anyone else disappointed that in a $72k car (as I’ve spec’d it); the cover/shade for the panoramic roof is manual.
The inability to close the shade for my kids in the back while I’m driving is something so basic, that it never ever factored into my car choice before.

May be a reason to wait for the model refresh - or to see how the Rivian R2 pans out.

Rear trim on M Sport v M Sport Pro

This is a personal opinion - but I think the rear trim of the M Sport with body colour rear diffuser looks much better than the black trim on the M Sport Pro.

I have ordered M Sport Pro - as many other style aesthetics of the top trim make the car look far more appealing, I just wish the rear matched the M Sport trim.

Went to see the IX3 NK at the dealer. Can say its looks much better in person, especially polarised grey and the sliver colours. Drives incredible too. Interior is definitely sub par in quality compared to older BMWs, just looks it although its functional and works. I actually liked the weird steering wheel in person, the thumb rests feel good. Pictures definitely dont do it justice.

M Sport vs M Sport Pro - Brakes

Is there actually a difference in the brakes on the two U.S. trims other than colored brake calipurs? I'm reading conflicting things. Does the M Sport Pro have performance brakes that are idfferent from the M Sport? Or is the hardware the same?

Ix3 ride firmness compared to polestar 2

I’ve been looking into buying an Ix3, but one thing a lot of online reviews mention as a con is the firmness of the ride quality. For those who have driven it, how noticeable is it on less smooth roads? Particularly, if anyone has driven an ix3 and. Polestar 2, I would appreciate a comparison, as I know from experience that the suspension of the polestar was too firm for my liking.

2024 ix3 - should I buy

Hi all,
I’m based in the UK and seriously considering pulling the trigger on a nearly-new 2024 iX3. The new model is a bit out of budget, so this feels like the sweet spot for me.
This would be my first EV, so I’m trying to do my homework before committing. I’m aware of the official range figures, but I’d love to hear from actual owners about real-world experience – especially in the UK with our lovely weather!
A few things I’m curious about:
• Real-world range: How does it hold up in winter vs. summer? Motorway vs. city driving?
• Charging experience: Any surprises with the public charging network or home charging setup?
• Reliability: Any common issues or faults I should watch out for on a 2024 model?
• Running costs: Servicing, tyres, insurance – anything unexpectedly expensive (or cheap)?
• General ownership: Anything you wish you’d known before buying?
Basically – is there any reason I shouldn’t buy one, or anything I should be looking out for when viewing/test driving?
Thanks in advance for any insights. Really appreciate this community’s help!

We're planning on ordering an iX3 this coming week in the US. I'm torn as to whether we should buy it or lease it. The car will be driven less than 10,000 miles per year (probably around 8,000), which would make it better to buy it, but on the flip side, I'm concerned about the massive depreciation of EVs. I'm also concerned about repair costs once the warranty expires.

Thoughts?

Anyone know what happens, and when, after iX3 order & $1,000 deposit are submitted?

I just finalized a specific iX3 Build with my local BMW dealer (in SE Virginia), and have paid the $1K deposit through Stripe. I didn't get a good run-down of what specifically happens next, and I understand that deliveries to the US won't start until the fall or later; but I'm wondering what to expect for 'next steps'.

I know that I can start tracking progress once a Production Number is assigned to my order; but have no idea how long that usually takes & what kind of communication I should be getting from the dealer &/or BMW of N. America. Can anyone tell me what to expect? Thanks!
