The 5 writers who most influenced Hunter S. Thompson
First US edition. Grapes of Ralph
Another book about booze. One might get the impression that Ralph has a love for the stuff. You'd be right.
At least, he did, as did i. Idint know where he stands these days on the stuff.
Now i only do stunt drinking very, very rarely. I developed the ability to down a pint in about 5 seconds, and it's fun to do an occasional demo.
One serious case of gout is enough to put anyone off regular booze, though. Drinking through *that* pain is a level of commitment with which i cannot identify.
Once again, the good doctor was way ahead of the curve!
Fear and Loathing in Aspen (2021)
Actually better than I was expecting. The lead performance is in my opinion the most uncanny depiction of the HST yet. The movie had a nice documentary feel, wasn’t trying to ripoff any of the other Thompson movies.
Ibogaine
In the 60s, Thompson started a rumor that Muskie was on Ibogaine, and by rumor I mean he printed it in Rolling Stone later collected in Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72. One of my favorites.
My original copy, 43 years old
This book has seen some shit. My mom originally gave me this copy in 1983 or 84. Little did she know she was giving be a blueprint for the science experiment i turned my life into.
Hey, i can speak in complete sentences of occasional wit *and* walk around (often simultaneously and without injury). The acid amped up my bullshit detector, as did all the speed.
Now an occasional mushroom reset keeps everything in balance, and of course weed. I don't know what the fuckheads in charge are thinking, but making weed less available while increasingly turning our lives into a subscription plan seems like a dangerous game.
In any event, i can't count how many times I've read through this copy.
Tattooed a couple of months after Hunter's death.
(excuse the dry skin 😬)
Make America Fear and Loath Again
"This president here, this little bastard, is just a creation of his father and the Reagan brain trust. A lot of those people came out of Nixon, it’s really like the rebirth of Richard Nixon. Nixon lives! But these people make Nixon look like a liberal."
Hunter on George W. Bush in a 2002 interview for Australian radio.
Art by Ralph Steadman
My fear and loathing tattoo about a year healed
“You shouldn’t work for someone who would fire you on your way to a war zone” HST
I think the trick is that you have to use words well enough so that these nickle-and-dimers who come around bitching about being objective or the advertisers don't like it are rendered helpless by the fact that it's good. That's the way people have triumphed over conventional wisdom in journalism.
Is it possible to find a list of every article Hunter S Thompson wrote?
I would really love if someone had a list of every magazine he contributed to so I can read all of em!
Just read these subheads top to bottom.
Hunter would have imploded.
Just got my HST Grail. Scanlans Vol. 4 June 1970
I had this on a saved Ebay search for years, but Vol. 4 never comes up, or it comes up at stupid prices. I missed an Etsy sale a few years ago for a stained Vol.4 but this is the first Volume 4 I have seen since then that wasn't in an expensive signed set.
Any suggestions on how to frame/display/store?
After the outhouse dispute
So eventually my neighbor and I worked out a deal for the outhouse. The details aren’t interesting other than me learning that a high use outhouse can develop an uncomfortable peak during the freezing winter months. Dig those holes deep folks.
This all happened in the early 1990s Woody Creek/Lenado Colorado. My cabin was an old miners shack in a mining camp called Lenado that sits at the top of Woody Creek Canyon. Down at the bottom of the canyon where Woody Creek flows into the Roaring Fork, is the Woody Creek Tavern and surrounding trailer park. Thompson lived in between but closer to the tavern where he had a somewhat dedicated barstool next to the wall with a pay phone behind a curtain. Sort of his office away from home.
Hunter’s car back then was a big red convertible Chevy Caprice that he called the Red Shark in homage to the Fear and Loathing Cadillac.
I was at the cabin on a chilly overcast March afternoon when the normal peace was shattered by loud engine revving and gunfire. I hit the deck when I spotted Hunter driving the Chevy, top down, blasting away at the sky with a shotgun.
Apparently, my other neighbor from hell (the hunting camp guide) passed Hunter while he was on the way down the canyon and Hunter was on the way up. The dirt road is very narrow and plunges several hundred feet down on the side next to the uphill traveler. Hunter felt squeezed next to the drop off and it irritated him so much that he grabbed his shotgun and drove up to Lenado blasting at the sky with one hand and driving with the other. By the time he u-turned and headed back down to his place there were no injuries or casualties.
Someone called the local paper about the commotion, their reporter showed up at Hunter’s place joining Sheriff Braudis who was a friend of Thompson and had arrived ahead of the reporter. Hunter explained that he’d just saved the local economy from giant menacing black birds of prey that had been circling the valley and were likely to spook the tourists and spoil the spring skiing season.
