hello, I’m relatively new to the furry fandom but I’ve been interested in it since ~2017. I’m interested in making a fursona, some little creature to represent me. but I have no idea where to start. there’s a lot of people who make posts like this and describe themselves so others can get some ideas on what their fursona could be like

I am a leo (august 9th), I born in the year of the rabbit if you want eastern zodiac stuff. I would describe myself positively as caring, creative, free-formed with strong morals, a sense of humour, and pretty. on the negative side, I would describe myself as secretive, a perfectionist, judgy and easily angered/scared. others would describe me as creative, kind, introverted, and sometimes awkward. I love both dogs and cats and a lot of people say that I’m really good with animals and kids. I am autistic, diagnosed at three years old, and I think I may have OCD as well.

I have dark brown eyes and a square-ish face shape with a broad nose (?). I’m pretty pale and I have naturally dark brown hair, but it was pure black when I was a baby. I usually forget to brush my hair and it’s long with a side part, I usually hide my ears underneath my hair and the parts in front of my chest and neck curl towards each other. I have a fairly average body shape with long fingers, but I have very small hands and feet (I can rarely ever find any gloves that fit me and my shoe size is a womans 6.) I don’t shave my body hair. I am a trans guy and pre-everything, but despite that a lot of people have asked me “are you a boy or a girl?” my voice can be deep and monotone or high pitched and expressive depending on how I feel, and I have a speech impediment that used to be really strong when I was younger but its getting less noticeable.

my music taste mainly includes lorn, the residents, devi mccallion, dreamcrusher, femtanyl, sometimes oingo boingo, and lauren bousfield. I also enjoy noisy, upbeat music, but I usually try to avoid creepy artists like that one “lolicore” genre. my story-related interests mainly include off (morals wise, I honestly think that the batter isn’t evil), homestuck (for more info about my personality, I am a derse dreamer and a rogue of space.) look outside, fear and hunger (for more info about my personality, I have a defiant soul.) and maybe regretevator (I’m starting to hate it a bit but my favourite character is still MR). I used to love wings of fire, the furry fandom and animation memes when I was younger, I still do. I like making physical crafts (usually wearable in some way) and drawing digitally, I like listening to music and I try to make my own songs but I often give up on them. I like playing video games and pretending I’m a super popular streamer, I enjoy cosplay but I haven’t finished a project yet. I’m also making up a story, the protagonists are called phamao and hobzahr. I like both fantasy and sci-fi, but if I were to choose one over the others i would choose sci-fi.

I wish to be physically stronger despite the fact I hate exercising, it’s usually an unpleasant and boring experience for me. I wish to create a great story that’ll be super famous and comfort a whole bunch of people

I feel like the coolest aspect for my fursona would be horns or wings, although wings are hard to draw and would probably be hard to make, so horns would be better creation-wise but it would be so fun to pretend I could fly. I’m mainly trying to make a fursona so I can stick with one costume (*fursuit) idea as I like making costumes but my ideas keep changing over and over

I've been trying to do a bunch of research on character design in general in order to improve at creating furry designs. However, I keep running into a major sticking point when I go try to design a fursona with what I've learned. One of the biggest character design tips is to make the design FIT into the world/story, and make it clear exactly what purpose the design is fulfilling within that world/story.

Does anyone have tips for figuring out how to do this with a character that is supposed to represent Yourself? I tried picking a story theme, of sorts, but I want my fursona to be able to represent me within my real life, and real life is so messy. I've been struggling to narrow down into a focus for the design, but when I try, then it doesn't feel like it "fits" real events that I've experienced.

Or does anyone have another methodology that they use to design fursonas?
