I’m considering a position at the Huntington Bank location in Downtown Flint. Is that a good area?

As the title says, I'm considering a position at the Huntington Bank location in Downtown Flint (Saginaw St), and I'm curious whether it's a “good” area. My parents and I both live in Grand Blanc, and when I asked my Dad about it, he made it out as if I'd be in Hood town USA

Is the Kettering area safe?

I made a new Reddit account for this because I don’t want people knowing where I live linked to my real one.

Anywho, I’ve lived in flint for nearly 30 years but have moved quite a bit due to schooling and whatnot, had to move back with family to finish college in my early 20s etc. I was living in a place over on the north end against my better judgment after spending most of my life afraid of going outside due to the growing drug problems in my parents neighborhood. My parents are a bit delusional about flint being “safe”, so they didn’t really warn me about how bad the north end would be. Nothing happened to the house I was renting because my roommate was a veteran who was armed and well respected in the neighborhood. But I swore after moving out of that place that I’d be willing to put safety above money if I could afford it, even just barely. I moved to a much nicer area after that, but my current landlord is selling the house so I have to leave.

I have looked at renting a nice house in the area that’s basically across the street from Kettering University. I drove around a bit and the neighborhood does look well kept. The landlord says all the neighbors are very kind people and it’s a safe neighborhood, but he’s a large man. I know it gets sketchier the closer you get to flushing road, but realistically how bad is the area close to Kettering? I want to be able to sit on the porch or take a stroll on a nice day and not have someone follow me to ask me for money, peer into my car windows, dig through my trash, bang on my door in the middle of the night asking for money, or hear random shots or dog fighting (all problems I’ve encountered in the past).

Edit: before anyone says anything nasty about my descriptions, I’m a young woman. It IS scary to be followed home by someone asking for money or to have your door pounded on at night for the same reason. Women spend the majority of their lives on high alert assessing threat levels, so you really won’t know what that fear is like if you’re a dude, thanks. I don’t want to be bothered by that fear in my new neighborhood, and that’s not crazy or offensive to say.

Advice on finding housing?

Hello new friends!

I just graduated from medical school and will be moving to the area for residency this summer. I am looking for a place to live, however I am unfamiliar with the area.

My hospital is near Grand Blanc, and the program is 4 years long. I have found a few decent-looking spots around there, but I much prefer cities to suburbs and just today found a couple promising places in (I think) East Village in Flint. So I'd like to learn more about what's good in Flint proper!

Basically looking for advice on whether East Village is a solid spot, which other neighborhoods I should check out, and whether buying is a good option. Most likely would have to move after residency for my next job depending on what's available and what I decide to do, however I am super tired of renting, and I really want a backyard for my dog and at least in GB there's nothing for rent with a yard.

Highest priorities for me are quiet area, close to a grocery store, max 25-min drive of hospital, walkable area or nearby parks to walk my dog...

Any advice is much appreciated! Looking forward to moving up and getting to know the area!

Condolences to the Tessmer family for their loss, and to the former and present staff of Soggy Bottom. Sucks to have such a vibrant and busy third space close here.

Super excited about the move and curious if anyone has any tips or advice for living in Flint! We love to go out to eat so any local joints would be nice to know. Moving out here mostly just for the proximity of Chicago. Thanks guys!

Grand Blanc LDS Church incident – discussion on local awareness and reporting

Has anyone in Genesee County been following the reporting on the Grand Blanc LDS Church incident?

I’ve noticed there’s been a lot of discussion and different versions of coverage circulating, and I’m curious how people locally feel about how it’s been reported and understood.

Not trying to push any specific source—just wondering what people in the area have been hearing and whether local reporting has felt accurate or complete.

Hey all,

I'm working on a new idea for a community clothes swap and wanted some feedback from the community.

Ever since Mackelmore brought thrifting into the spotlight; they've kinda gone to crap. Prices shot up and finding decent clothes be came that much harder.

What if there was a clothes swap that cost nothing to participate in? That is to say an event where you could bring your clothes in that you're tired of, don't fit right because you lost weight, or just don't want anymore, drop them off, and find new duds without paying a cent.

What if said event had basic alterations avaliable for a donation/ nominal fee? Find a pair of pants you like but they're just too long? We could hem them. What if there was a few screen printing options available to give a little community pride or personalization to your new to you gear?

Would you use an event like this or know someone who would?

I am moving to the flint area from the west side of the state, have never visited but am looking for apartments online.

I was wondering if anyone has experiences with Miller West apartments and the safety of that neighborhood in general? I am a single female who would be working nights/weird hours much of the time so safety is a priority.

Can someone please explain to me why NOTHING in that place works? Or why they think they don't have to do their job?

I turned in bottles and no matter how many times I tried returning the diet sprites it wouldnt read them. They refused to take them and give me the deposits.

Ive been banned cause I wasnt nice about it. Thats bullshit. Fix your machines. 3 machines and not one was working right... also they sell it, so they have to take them... I ended up just getting my money from the others and left.

Also, banning me from that location is like banning me from a shit house. I only went there to turn in bottles. I dont spend money there soooooo 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hi there, this September I am holding the third edition of my short horror film festival, the Flint Short Film Freakout!, right in Flint at the Flint Local 432. Over the other seasons we got in amazing short work from around the globe, but I want to be able to highlight some of the great local work that is out there.

There are awards for best short, scariest, and best Michigan-made film. This is a horror film festival though, so that's what I am looking for.

You can submit films here - https://filmfreeway.com/FlintShortFilmFreakout

If you have any questions, lemme know!

(Thanks for letting me post this!)

Hi y'all, I'm a student doing research on the Flint water crisis, trying to figure out how much residents would be willing to pay to avoid the crisis.

To those who were in Flint at the time, kindly reply with a number to below.

  1. What is the highest one-time amount your household would definitely be willing to pay?

($0-$5000)

Would love any other informational comment, and if you are willing to be asked more questions about what you or your family experienced, pls dm. Thanks.

EDIT; I understand the frustration and in no way am I trying to say that these costs EQUAL the damage your families have faced, but for inquiry on proving why the SETTLEMENT cost is too low.
