Mine is very simple. Ankle length dresses/skirts are NOT “mid length” and I’m tired of them being advertised as such. They are maxi length (or midaxi length at best). Mid length is from below the knees to the mid shins, ankle length and lower is maxi/midaxi!

I just saw the wildest possible recession indicator: Nordstrom is now carrying H&M.

The circular economy is booming, the lipstick index is up, we are all learning how to mend & sew.

I'm wondering: what are the recession indicators you are seeing in your region, or area of the world?

Are you personally practicing or making use of any?

In North America, the economy is profoundly awful right now. The worst it has ever been, including the 2008 crash. Fashion can not ignore this much longer, and true Art always engages on some level with larger societal issues.

How will this manifest in fashion, aesthetics, and consumerism? How is it manifesting for you?

Do you think its a net-positive or a net-negative?

Does anyone know much about the hemline index? What is that doing?

Would love to hear everyone's takes & thoughts.

There's a lot of anxiety out there from my generational peers about dressing and I'm here to say; What? Like it's hard?

There's plenty of sources out there for clothes that take cues from current trends and execute them in a subdued grown up way whether that's Marcella NYC, Universal Standard, or the Gap hydra. You could live in that stuff and have a pretty easy go of it.

But what if you want to do more?

Now, I'm 41, WFH, and live somewhere blue collar and outdoorsy with a weird streak. So my needs and lifestyle will have different demands and allowances, knowing yours is key.

From a base of adult contemporary styles and basics you can branch out into vintage, niche, designer, or whatever else you need or vibe with and incorporate those elements.

Take stock of what you already own. Shapes, styles, colors, materials, what you wear most and what's missing. You can look up color palettes on Pinterest or use tools like coolors.co to plot out your color scheme goals.

Really think about how you want to branch out. For example, if you're jeans and Tshirt centric to a fault, look into fun shoes and sick ass jackets that match the vibe and try to incorporate shades and themes in your graphics. Up your jeans game with current and or classic styles. Hell, get into vintage denim.

Shake off the idea of named styles and needing referral links from influencers who look just like you and really think about individual pieces you want to incorporate. Start searching for what you want piece by piece. Descriptively. Don't be afraid to go down a rabbit hole. That can be where the good stuff lives.

Finding niche brands is cool and all, but you'll be amazed what you find when you decenter brand identity from shopping. Imagine my surprise that Land's End makes the plush 90s style corduroy wide leg pants I've been searching for for ages.

Take flatlay measurements of things you own that you like the fit on to compare to listings and size charts. This will help more than your own measurements as they will account for the ease needed to wear things comfortably.

And finally for real for real, be aware of your limitations but also be willing to branch out. Mixed messages, I know, but it will help you achieve a balance of realistic exploration.

In a fashion sense of course. I see the trend the influencers are plugging and I just can’t get on board. Baggy, oversized, square. I’m not saying ALL trends from 2016-ish but I think fashion looked way better for women then compared to now. For clarification, this post is written by a woman.

This thread is for individual style questions that you may have, especially those that don't warrant their own thread. We all want a diversified opinion, so feel free to answer any questions (of which you know the answer).

To get the best responses, remember that people cannot: look into your wardrobe, know what style you normally like or what words like affordable or practical mean to you so please include any relevant details such as your budget, where you live, what stores are available to you, etc.

Example questions:

  • Are there any basic crewneck white t-shirts that are opaque and do not have cap sleeves for <$25 available in Australia?
  • Is this dress and shoes suitable for an evening wedding with a cocktail dress code taking place in a [venue type]?
  • If I like the outfits in this [imgur album / pinterest board], what are some specific items I can look into to start dressing like that, and brands with this look that carry plus sizes?
  • Does this outfit look neater with the pants cuffed or uncuffed?

If you'd like to include a picture, you can now post pictures directly in the comments, without having to link an imgur album. If you have multiple pictures, best practice is to use an imgur album.

I am thinking about taking my laundry to a wash & fold service from now on, since it is my least favorite chore. The problem with that is it seems that a huge proportion of 'stylish' clothes, or rather clothes that aren't 100% cotton/aren't jeans or t-shirts, say to line dry or dry flat. Everybody (almost everybody) loves jeans and t-shirts, but I imagine most people also like to have more variety than that in their wardrobes.

I do a lot of online window shopping and it seems like almost every indie/direct-to-consumer clothing brand, almost every mainstream 'stylish' brand like Aritzia, Reformation, etc., almost every high-end brand, produces primarily air dry clothing with the exception of their denim, t-shirts, and dry clean only products.

So this all got me thinking. For those of you who have tried to negotiate a minimal laundry lifestyle, how do you negotiate your sense of style with maintenance? Do you figure that brands write air dry just to reduce their liability, and so you take the risk of sending those so-called air dry items to wash & fold? Do you just wear jeans and t-shirts all the time to avoid the problem entirely? Have you found brands that make a wide variety of clothes that can go in the dryer? And is anyone else noticing this tension?

I'm curious, because brands seem completely uninterested in making durable clothing, but I can't be the only one who doesn't appreciate the extra work.

If you had a $500/month clothing budget, what categories are worth splurging on? (For me: activewear)

Question for the fashion brains here: if you suddenly had $500/month to spend on your wardrobe, what would you spend it on first?

I’m a regular gym-goer, so my hot take is I’d happily put a chunk of that into activewear (I wear Lululemon-style stuff nonstop and it actually earns its keep). But maybe I’m over-prioritizing it?

What would you focus on—activewear, shoes, outerwear, bags, basics, tailoring, something else? And what’s your reasoning?

What summer tops are actually worth buying in 2026?

I’m trying to refresh my wardrobe and want tops that feel current but still wearable day-to-day, What’s trending but still practical? And what’s already starting to feel overdone?

Disclaimer: I’m not paid by or affiliated with any of these brands or stores in any way, and I don’t get anything out of you buying something I’ve recommended other than satisfaction. This is not market research or self-promotion. Also, I wrote this myself, and I researched and chose these items myself!

Here's the collection! (brights are at the top! scroll down for more muted/darker colors!)

I’m a personal stylist, so I spend a significant chunk of my work time sourcing unique items for clients; for fun I’d like to share a small slice of my sprawling shopping library with you -- manageably curated with the hope of helping you find some styling inspiration or the couple of pieces you may have been looking to add to your spring/summer wardrobe.

I generally source from designers and companies who are, at minimum, engaging in more sustainable manufacturing by working with more ecologically sound materials or employing workers at fairer rates in safer environments. Mixed in you’ll also find a selection of vintage stuff, accessories from small independent artists, and a few straight luxury pieces (new and secondhand). By virtue of my current set of projects, this collection is also loosely focused on feminine-leaning, fashion-forward pieces.

If you’re familiar with seasonal color analysis, you’ll also notice that the collection is organized by subseason beginning with Bright Spring at the top; flexible pieces in various neutrals and metals are mixed in, though, so I’d definitely encourage browsing beyond your palette!

Things you won’t find in this collection:

Beige sacks: I’ve never really understood the complaint I’ve often seen that most sustainable brands are boring/frumpy/ugly/plain, but if you’ve ever had that problem when shopping I can promise you won’t have it here. Every item I’ve included has at least one exciting design element, and there are abundant statement pieces.

“Basics”: Plain tees and simple athleisure are readily available and aren’t especially interesting to include in a visual shopping guide designed for a broad audience. If you’re in need of these kinds of basics from more sustainable brands, I’d try Leze, Eileen Fisher, Marcella NYC, Baserange, Industry of All Nations, Boden, or Big Bud Press.

Low Low Prices!!!: Items range from a $20 hand-painted hair clip to a $380 pair of silk trousers; most pieces are between $60 and $200. I don’t ascribe to the cult of the shopping haul and I know that a $12 dress has no chance of being made by someone making a living wage for their work, so there are no truly “cheap” items here. That said, I understand that most people do not have the means to shop exclusively at sustainable luxury retailers (myself included -- I have fancy taste and sometimes dress people of means, but I don’t make much doing it), so I’ve chosen items at a very wide range of price points. I’ve done this with the understanding that this means that many of the less expensive items are from companies with weaker, more varied, or less well-documented sustainability and ethics practices, because I'm confident they’re still better than whatever you might buy from Amazon, Shein, H&M, Free People, Banana Republic, etc.

“Vegan leather”: Leather is almost always superior in appearance, function, and durability to plastic for comparable fashion applications; the useable life of a leather jacket or shoe is years or decades longer than a plastic one, and I therefore consider it specifically unethical to replace leather with plastic. You won’t find any products that are made of ‘vegan leather’, ‘faux leather’, or other euphemisms for plastic in this collection. If it’s plastic, it’ll say so.

Let me know if you have questions or if there are other curated collections that would interest you (like a fall/winter version, more masc styles, lingerie, activewear, leather goods, formalwear, suiting, utility/workwear, etc.) and I’ll do what I can! Enjoy!

But just like MFA, and per your suggestions, we are now going to have a weekly recent purchases thread. So gather round and brag about your purchases! Bags, clothing, shoes, jewellery, perfume, etc.

If possible, please share a picture and a little review! Pictures can also be shared directly in the comments now.
