Set up a home server for degoogling, anyone interested in a guide?

Hey everyone,

As part of my degoogling journey, I built a home server using my old 2011 PC. So far I’ve set it up with Arch Linux, Podman for containers, Quadlet for setting up NetBird, Nginx Proxy Manager for TLS certificates, Node-RED and systemd services for automation.

To make things reasonably secure, I used Podman for my services and Quadlet to run NetBird as a systemd service.

With this setup, I’ve been able to move away from Google Photos, Google Drive, and I’m slowly moving away from Gmail too.

I’ve been keeping a small internal doc of what I did so I can remember it later. I was thinking of turning it into a proper guide if enough people are interested.

The guide could cover things like Arch setup, Cockpit setup, Podman setup, Nginx Proxy Manager setup, Node-RED automation setup, and the other steps I used to build the server.

Would anyone here be interested in something like that?

Is there any indian youtuber that makes content in local languages (including hindi) that focuses on maintaining your privacy online?

Is there someone that exists in India who makes content similar to Naomi Brockwell, All Things Secured, David Bombal, Rob Braxman Tech etc?

I personally think there might be a huge gap india for this kind of content....

Google is purposely sabotaging degooglers

Since we already know about this reCAPCHA thing (link) and how it is going to affect everyone with a degoogled phone along with concerns like scammers impersonating reCAPCHA with they own QR, I request every website owner here to try to shift to an alternative like Cloudflare Turnstile or ALTCHA rather than using reCAPCHA by Google. This will let us evade Google's tactics for now atleast.

Does anyone here have a idea what will happen to the people who don't use a smartphone? How will they even scan the QR?

There is a Way to Use BHIM Without Uninstalling Shizuku!

Hey everyone, we all know that BHIM has started flagging some apps as dangerous and refusing to operate until these flagged apps are uninstalled. Unfortunately, Shizuku is one of them, and BHIM is flagging it as a rooting app, leaving no choice but to uninstall Shizuku to use BHIM.

I've sent them countless emails regarding this issue and requested that they fix it as soon as possible, but they haven't cared at all. This restriction was first introduced in version 4.0.17 of BHIM, and the latest version is 4.0.21. Since then, four versions have been released, but the issue has never been fixed.

I was suffering from this issue. As, I didn't want to sacrifice my usages of Shizuku for making UPI payments. Surprisingly, there is a fork of Shizuku that offers Stealth Mode. A big thanks to u/ghajni-returns for letting me know about this Shizuku fork! It might be a lifesaver for users who don't want to uninstall Shizuku but also rely heavily on BHIM for making payments.

>By using Stealth mode users can hide Shizuku from other apps by changing its package name.

About this app: This is a fork [Github] of Shizuku, maintained by u/the_djchi.

Availability: As of now, only beta versions have this Stealth mode, so make sure you have installed the latest beta version from Releases.

Setup:

  1. At first, you need to set it up normally (Pairing via Wireless Debugging, then Start).
  2. After Shizuku starts running, navigate to the bottom, and there is an option named Hide Shizuku from other apps. Click on it, then click on Hide. (Optional: You can create a custom package name if you want.)
  3. Then select a folder; a new APK of the Shizuku will be saved here.
  4. After that, uninstall the current Shizuku app.
  5. Navigate to the folder and install that new Shizuku APK. If the APK doesn't install, try restarting your device once.
  6. After a successful installation, pair it via wireless debugging and start Shizuku.
  7. IMPORTANT - Set up Geto, because BHIM will now ask you to turn off debugging. Geto will bypass this check and BHIM recognise that everything is normal.
  8. After setting up everything, you can now use BHIM without any issue.

Drawback of this fork: Shizuku/Sui installer will not work. So, if any apps like F-Droid, Aurora Store, etc., use this installer to install and update apps, that won't be possible with this Shizuku fork.

Alternate Way? Try using a different UPI app.

Hope it helps! Please let me know your experience in the comments below.
