Staircase surprises
In recent runs, I seem to have come across what seems like a higher than average number of spawn camped staircases upon first going down (and in the worst case scenarios, all the stairs are in one LOS area)
In the second pic, I was a midgame PoEn with really high stealth and everything was still immediately awake!
As a mediocre player I usually brute force it by just burning through consumables, but obviously this seems suboptimal, wondering what everyone’s favorite strategies/tricks for beating these spawn camped floor/branch entries are?
Edit: I should say on midgame characters especially since a late game blaster can just Chain Lightning/Shatter their way out obviously
YASD This one really hurt. 95 AC/EV/SH, an accidental gem, my first ever, killed by water nymphs.
crawl.akrasiac.orgHow do i get better?
Ive been playing for over a decade, taking long breaks here and there. I have some wins under my belt but nothing in the advanced species ever. I haven't won a single time in the new release but have died in Zot a few times. I do all the usual tactical stuff but admit I rush sometimes. I feel like I hit a skill ceiling I cant break through and its frustrating me. Maybe this is a question people cant answer but is there any advice people can give to identify my weak points and push through? Playthroughs on YouTube?

Its clear that I dislike the races that just slap on -HP% or bad all around aptitudes as a way to make the race more challenging.
Any race that is just more squishy and has bad defenses as a way to make gameplay more interesting is just repetitive and duplicative design. It would be fine if there were one or two squishy characters with no defenses but there are far too many in the game right now and "no defenses" is just an easy, slapdash way to devs to make a race more challenging. Make their weaknesses more interesting and gameplay relevant than just "Hey this guy has very little health to balance the powers the race has."
Vinestalker, Oni, Troll, Octopode, Spriggan, deep elf, all feel too similar in gameplay due to the most important gameplay mechanic between the 5 of them being how squishy and easy to kill they are. Tengu is the only one I like because the innate acrobat is great for any build and teaches players to run away from combats. A very well designed race that actually feels worth the lack of HP rather than just being an outright hinderance and handicap.
I'm just so sick of being so squishy. I've died in zot with great resistances and defences twice because the damage spikes just keep coming and coming, and I just get so low that I need to use haste or tele or blink to escape and I just run out of consumables. I did a berzerker, destroy the tesseract and lo and behold of course there are 4 orbs of winter right behind it who just demolish me instantly with no ability to counter whatsoever and I'm completely out of consumables.
Every time I die its because get hit twice on some lucky hits and damage in one turn and i'm automatically in the red AND my mp is gone so I can't use god powers.
Got storm form up in another run, died to some BS.
I really, really think this race is unfun to play. I am literally having more fun playing felid. It just a race where it was like "What if you feel weak literally all the time"
Tying to even figure out how a stabbing build could work its just anti fun and so much meaningless finagling of positioning and tedious crap like that (Reminds me of stair dancing shit). Don't even suggest uskayaw to me. I just die before I can even kill the first dude in the group. I don't know how you expect me to build up the piety to kill these groups with stabbing once they fall asleep. I'm literally in the red before they even fall asleep. Then, after I stab one, all the rest of them wake up. Dead.
Advice please on MiFi Quaz for extended
For the first time ever, I sliced through Zot 5 like I was a longbow archer at the battle of Agincourt and my hubris says go for a 4+ rune run but I know enough to ask your opinion first. I've only got one pip of fire but it doesn't seem to matter. My health only dips with torment etc.

I was having a pretty successful stabber run, using necromancy and hexes as a poltergeist, mostly using gloom, a pain dagger, sometimes using dispel undead or mephitic cloud as appropriate, as well as other hex spells. I was using Uskayaw, who was working great honestly.
Then I died rather unexpectedly to a single pair of earth and air elemental because I realized too late that despite having a huge pile of unused consumables, nothing I had worked against them. Now I should've realized I would run into this eventually, but I'm really not sure what I should've done to hedge against this.
Premptively tech into some other weapon type? It occurred to me I could've got confusion touch, but I don't know if that works or not.

YASD: Finally beat vine stalker fighter: Just needed a yoked tower shield and quick blade of chaos.
Finally beat vine stalker. Still did not have any fun with the race. It simply feels the same to play as a melee brute who ends up having good regen, but feels very, very dependant on awesome armor or shield drops in order to not feel intensely squishy and frail. I really don't think forcing people to play a melee race with low HP is that fun, and even if innate spirit guardian is nice, it just doesn't feel that impactful. Finagling a way to make this race work did not feel fulfilling, rather like I was being forced to play in a specific way with no way to break free from the constraints of the race. I thought crawl was about taking what comes to you, not waiting for a very specific build like is required for this race.
Usk is fun I guess, if not just an "I win" button that feels a bit vestigial and unrewarding. I literally just clicked on Tiamat and killed her. Just tab tab tab and get rewarded by all the enemies falling dead. Yaaaaay...I guess? Not a lot of interesting decisions to be made with this race. Probably the least memorable and interesting encounter with Tiamat that I have had yet. (The best being using Yred to make her my ally.)
Any race that is just more squishy and has bad defenses as a way to make gameplay more challenging is just repetitive and duplicative design in my opinion. It would be fine if there were one or two squishy characters with no defenses but there are far too many in the game right now and "no defenses" is just an easy, slapdash way to devs to make a race more challenging. I really don't see much difference between this race and the old "human with different aptitudes races. The bite is mechanically interesting, but gameplay wise it ends up feeling like a powerful antimagic weapon with a speed brand. Not exactly the most exciting thing in the world or providing interesting gameplay decisions or unique gameplay
I suspect I will feel the same way about Felid and Mummy as it literally just seems like "Play the game without all the fun parts, as if a masochist had created it."
Anyway, Mummy, Kobold, Human, Felid to go to greaterplayer.
This isn't an attack, I am asking for enlightenment. I'm someone who has gotten a lot of enjoyment from games like Qud, Brogue, and CDDA. I want DCSS to pull me in. From someone with maybe 2 hours in the game, can you please tell me if I am totally wrong about what I have observed so far?
Early game combat is relatively repetitive. Most of the enemies have very little difference in behavior or tactics. I compare this to brogue, where nearly every enemy has a different movement pattern, attack style, or gimmick. If this were chess, Brogue makes each monster feel like a different chess piece. DCSS feels very sameish. It comes off as false variety. My tactics don't change at all between most of the monsters I have ran into.
Then, when I look at Qud, I see a massive sandbox of possibilities around the mutation system, item randomization, enemy variety, factions, etc. Again I don't see this in DCSS. I haven't yet dug fully into the gods system, but even the species system feels a little underwhelming compared to how Qud lets you manage limbs and whatnot.
I bring up these other games because they are often compared in the same breath, and many people say that DCSS has depth in ways that outclass both of these games.
I know this will make some people mad, that's not my intention, but what am I missing? What is the unique thing that DCSS brings to the table that makes you play for hundreds of hours? What point should I try to make it to in the game before I decide it just isn't a game for me? Did you have to play for a while before the game "clicked"? I love reading the reviews from people with hundreds of hours, but every time I try the game I bounce off.
For a 3 rune run, should I switch to the Consecrated labrys or stick with the Randart Broad Axe?
The last image is spare ring with rElec if I choose to switch from the Broad Axe
My money is on tower shield. When I find one before lair I become an unhittable killing machine and that continues all the way through zot if you keep enchanting it.
Could also be buckler because of the lack of need to invest skill points and the insane upside of using it.
Honorable mention to giant rock and boomerangs.
Do kills by Trog's Brothers In Arms summons give you the normal amount of XP?
I'm curious whether there's an XP tradeoff here.
Cornered in Swamp (Need Guidance)
I tried to be cheesy and drag an alligator up the stairs to finish off, however, it dragged me instead. I tried to fight, using HS just to have my health melted away. I tried using scrolls of fear then making a run for the stairs, but they just won't budge.
I've already used SL, and I don't have blink identified yet.
Any tips on how to potentially survive this, or is me and my enchanted granite talisman gonna be on a YASD ;-;
Edit: here's my char dump, I couldn't figure out how to find a link for it offline:
