Which lines hit the hardest for you?

One of the reasons I love Daughter so much is Elena’s ability to balance abstract metaphor with emotional specificity.

Her lyrics are never so abstract that they become impossible to understand, but they’re also not so narrowly personal that you can’t find yourself in them. That balance is something I crave from a lot of artists, and very few pull it off for me the way she does.

So I started thinking about specific lines that have stuck with me, the ones that still make me stop for a second because of how powerful, sharp, or devastating they are.

Here are nine of mine:

  1. I'll meet you on another planet if the plans change -- Be on Your Way
  2. Your father's a liar while my father's lying down -- A Hole in the Earth
  3. I'd never loved a living thing so much / I was not equipped to just / Sit and watch you quit on us -- To Rage
  4. The worst night of my life / Or even worse, the best -- Party
  5. You could still be what you want to / What you said you were when I met you -- Medicine
  6. I'm tryna get out / Find a subtle way out / Not just cross myself out / Not to disappear -- New Ways
  7. I want you so much / But I hate your guts -- Landfill
  8. I'll set fire to the whole place / I don't even care about our house -- Burn It Down
  9. Despite everything I'm still human -- Human

Which Daughter lines or verses are the most powerful to you?

What Does This Song Mean To You Series No. 11 | Witches

Mild spoilers for Before the Storm follow.

This is one of those Daughter songs that feels like it is slowly gathering itself before it finally breaks open. The gradual build-up is what gets me most: it lets the tension simmer until the eventual release feels less like a dramatic climax and more like something that simply could not stay buried anymore.

The emotional palette of the song, to me, is despair. Not quiet or delicate despair either, but something heavy and oppressive. When the track finally erupts, it feels like all the emotion it has been holding back crashes down at once.

Because of that, I have always connected “Witches” very strongly to Chloe Price, especially the emotional space of Before the Storm: grief, abandonment, self-destruction, and being alone inside your own head. There is something about the song that feels like a spiral, but also like someone reaching into that spiral and refusing to let go.

On a more personal note, I also write fanfic in the Life is Strange fandom, and I wrote a short scene that I associate closely with this song. It takes one small, haunting detail from Before the Storm, Chloe’s late-night “max” text, and reimagines the emotional weight behind it in this short live-action-style scene.

I thought I’d share it here as a little companion piece to the song:

For me, “Witches” feels like the sound of someone standing at the edge of what they can carry, right before that weight finally breaks the surface.
