Desperate to go outside

My 8 month old kitten Asher was diagnosed with Dry FIP at the beginning of February of this year with neurological symptoms. He stopped eating completely and barely moved. It was a super scary time.

We are 64 days into the treatment and he is acting like a normal exuberant kitten which is amazing to see. He’s eating like a champ and since his diagnosis he’s gone from 1.1kg to 2kg.

For context, I have 2 other cats (both rescued as kittens) that are indoor/ outdoor but also have a colony of cats (currently around 12) that live either in my garden or my neighbours or in our little compound. All of the colony cats are known to me and 8 of them have been spayed/neutered by me and my neighbour. The others, we’ve been unable to catch as yet. I live in Morocco which is well known for its feral cat problems.

However, Asher is desperate to go outside. He sits by the door and at the window and is vocal to both me and to all the other cats he sees. He paces along the window and climbs my mosquito netting everyday! He has escaped twice so far, both times in the last couple of weeks but has always come back.

Asher was born in my garden, his mom is one of the garden cats still but she abandoned him when he was 2 weeks old in the middle of my pathway in 43 degree Celsius heat. When he was 2 months old, he was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease so I think this is why she abandoned him.

My question is this- do I stand by the advice on keeping him indoors for the full 84 days plus the 12 week observation period or can I let him out for short periods. I honestly think it’s stressing him out more by keeping him indoors but of course, I just want to do the best for him to have a better chance of not relapsing.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I do not have a Facebook account so cannot join the group that is often recommended on here.

[UPDATE] Look at Potpot’s progress! From critical to climbing—your donations are saving his life.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share a comparison of Potpot’s blood work to show you just how much of a difference your support has made in only two weeks.

The Comparison:

April 4 (Previous): His Hemoglobin was at a terrifying 37 and his HCT was only 13.8%. He was extremely weak and we were so scared.

April 18 (Today): His Hemoglobin has risen to 56 and his HCT is up to 20.8%!

He is still below the "normal" range (which starts at 85 HGB), but this is a huge leap in the right direction. It proves that he is responding to the relapse treatment and the GS medication you helped me buy.

How your $130 (₱7,797) is being used TODAY:

2 New Vials: Secured! This gives him 12 more days of safety.

CBC Paid: Today’s check-up is covered.

Virbagen Omega Fund: We’ve started saving for his next immunotherapy cycle to keep this momentum going!

I am still carrying the debt from his first round of treatment, but seeing these numbers go up makes every struggle worth it. We still have 62 days to go, but Potpot is proving he wants to be here.

Thank you for being his angels. I couldn't have afforded these last few vials without you.

UPDATE: She was all over her lunch - I mixed in some kitten milk and she was a huge fan! I think I will keep adding it to boost her calories for a while.

We are on day 14 of treatment. This morning Sophie was zipping all over the place playing but was not interested in eating. She had been doing really well and today I had to water down her food and coax her to eat. Has anyone else experienced this? Meanwhile I am picking up some kitten milk to water down the food.

In the photo she is hanging out with her buddies- all of them laying on me!

Update: Suspected FIP – Ultrasound shows abdominal effusion, awaiting GS quotation

Hi everyone,

I’m sharing an update on my cat Bobyo.

He was taken to the vet due to abdominal swelling, fever and loss of appetite. An ultrasound was done, and the vet’s notes show abdominal fluid (effusion). Based on this, FIP has been discussed as a strong possibility.

I’ve attached the ultrasound and vet notes.

Current situation:

No GS treatment has started yet

Waiting for GS treatment quotation from the vet/seller

Treatment will begin once funding is secured.

Estimated costs:

FIP test: 250 AED ($68 USD)

GS treatment: 1,200 AED ($327 USD)

I am currently seeking support to help cover the FIP test and GS treatment so treatment can begin as soon as possible.

I will update again once I receive the quotation.

Thank you for your support and guidance.
