How to land in an IT job as a fresher in 2026

Hi everyone,

I’m a 2026 passout B.Tech Computer Science graduate, and I need some honest guidance from people already in the industry.

Until recently, I believed that doing a few small web development projects (like basic full-stack websites) would be enough to land a job. But now, seeing the current job market, I feel that’s not really enough, and I’m a bit confused about what direction to take.

I also had this mindset that CS graduates mainly go into development roles (like frontend, backend, or full stack). But now I’m realizing there are many other roles in IT, and I don’t have a clear understanding of them.

I would really appreciate if experienced folks could help me understand:

  1. What are the different roles a fresher CS graduate can apply for in 2026?

(For example: Software Developer, QA/Testing, DevOps, Data Analyst, ML/AI roles, etc.)

  2. What skills are generally expected for each of these roles?

Not deep expertise, but what is the minimum or baseline a fresher should know to get shortlisted?

3.If someone is average (not from a top college, no big internships), what path is more realistic to start with?

I’m willing to put in the effort, but right now I feel a bit directionless. Any practical advice, or even harsh truths are welcome.

Thanks in advance 🙏
