Is it just me or is Christchurch traffic getting noticeably worse lately?

Maybe I’m imagining it, but peak hour traffic in Christchurch feels noticeably worse than it did even a year or two ago. And it’s not just stadium event nights. Normal weekday mornings and afternoons seem increasingly clogged up too.

Routes that used to flow pretty well now regularly back up for ages. Add roadworks, school traffic, buses, freight, and everyone trying to get through the central city at once, and it feels like the city’s infrastructure is struggling to keep up.

Anyone else noticing this, or is it just me?

Genuine question, would Christchurch eventually need something like a central city congestion charge during peak hours? Obviously there would need to be exemptions for people living on or within the Four Avenues.

Not as a punishment for drivers, but ringfence the money specifically for better public transport. Things like:

  • More park and ride facilities
  • Higher frequency buses during peak times
  • Better suburban express routes
  • Smarter traffic light coordination

At some point just widening roads forever probably stops working (not that there is even much of that going on anyway). Part of me wonders whether something like this should be introduced earlier rather than waiting until congestion becomes completely unmanageable, so the revenue can start funding improvements before the problem gets even worse.

Curious what other people think, because driving around Christchurch lately feels noticeably more painful than it did even a few years ago.

Trucks blocking cycle-lane Orchard road every morning, Council refuse to enforce

Every single weekday morning between 06:30am and 07:00am there are vehicles blocking the cycle / pedestrian path on orchard road, out the back of the airport bunnings.

This is the absolute peak of morning commuter traffic and despite heading into winter, cycle commuting has never been more popular.

Its beyond dangerous.

YES! I have been in touch with council trying to get enforcement before someone gets killed (shout out to Sameer, you're absolutely useless)

Generic reply ...

> A Parking Enforcement Officer must attend at the time of the offence to investigate and issue an infringement notice. This means that Council cannot act on email or photo evidence alone. To ensure we can send a parking officer to attend, please contact us on 03 941 8999 or 0800 800 169 when the offence is happening. Our parking team operate between 7am and 5.45pm on weekdays. Their weekend hours are 8am to 3.45pm.

I've been through the maps, this path is absolutely a cycle lane, the street is also painted in broken yellow lines.

Phones do not get answered before 7am, and most emails do not get replied to.

I'm beyond frustrated with this situation.

Does anyone have a solution?

Rudolph Steiner School? Feedback? Likes? Dislikes?

We are moving to Christchurch in July with our two-year-old. He was set to attend a small Waldorf preschool when he turned 3. I was pleased to see Christchurch had a large Steiner school but couldn’t really access many reviews.

What’s it like? Anyone have experiences with the preschool and kindergarten program? What about upper grades and high school?

Any other schools you can recommend. The public school system where we are (US, underfunded, ridiculous constant state testing) is abysmal but hoping (for our pocketbook) it may be better in NZ.

Our main goal for elementary is plenty of outdoor time with a focus on social skills and well rounded formal education with a focus on the arts as well as STEAM. No state testing or minimal.

Chch at its best

Man, every summer (the collective) we get disappointed with the weather, it’s grey, cold, windy etc but the come 1st March think ‘aw no summer is over’ when in reality autumn is AMAZING. Like seriously! How good has the weather been?

It’s been warm, sunny, no wind pretty much every day so far. Much prefer this to summer! Is it a chch thing or all over the country?

Just been for a walk through the botanical gardens and couldn’t get over how beautiful it is and how lucky the tourists are!

What's with nobody following temporary road limits?

I swear that every time that I enter a temporary 30 roadwork zone, everyone behind me will tailgate almost leaving no room to need to suddenly break behind me without them crashing into me and everybody in front of me will just keep going at whatever speed that they were going at and end up miles ahead of me despite that I'm going the 30 limit that I'm supposed to. The moment that I'm going 30 in a temporary zone that's got multiple lanes people will just go into the other lane and book it at 50 despite that we JUST passed a sign saying that the road limit is 30 and we're about to enter a construction work area.

Does just nobody obey the rules of the temporary road limits here or am I just overreacting?

If you’re into hip hop in Christchurch you need to listen to The Sauce 96.1

Finally feels like Christchurch has a station actually backing hip hop properly. The Sauce has been going hard with way better music than the same recycled radio playlists everywhere else.
One minute they’re playing Scribe, then Outkast, then newer artists too. Proper mix of old school and current stuff instead of just TikTok songs and top 40 repeats all day. Way more local feel as well. Been discovering heaps of tracks I wouldn’t normally hear on NZ radio. Anyone else been listening? What’s been your favourite track or show on there so far? Mine is probably LL COOL J’s I’m bad.

I got hit by a car on my bike the other week. I was biking in the decicated cycle lane on St Asaph with my hi-vis and they swung across the lane (and over the speed bump!) to enter their block, and hit me quite hard. I've ended up having to pay about $300 so far in treatment costs for my injured back (co-payments / what ACC won't cover). The insurer paid for my bike repairs, but according to law won't cover my co-payments. I asked the adult who hit me nicely if she'd be able to contribute any amount towards the treatment costs, and she's declined, saying her company "has met their obligations."

I guess it's just upsetting, the lack of empathy. I thought kiwis had each other's backs. They're the director of this firm they were pulling into as well, so it's not like they don't have the means.

So I heard from a pretty reliable source that the real reason the crusaders horses have not been allowed at the new stadium is because SKY complained about how much room their horse truck and floats took up…

They must have come to their senses though because the horses are being reinstated.

No one seems to be able to tell the truth about anything these days.

Proposal in chch

Hi team, so one of my so really good friends and her partner is coming down to Christchurch to celebrate her birthday. Her partner reached out to me as he’s planning to propose he asked me to find a really good spot in Christchurch as they’ve never been here here before.

Any suggestions for a beautiful spot? We won’t be too dressed up but also preferably nowhere that’s going to be a long hike. And somewhere where a group of us will be able to access and surprise her just before the question is popped.

Internet Provider Options - Who do you rate?

I've been with the same provider for a very long time and a good cheap plan. It started as TelstraClear which then got obsorbed by Vodafone which then got obsorbed by One.

My plan is a HFC plan that provides fast speeds unlimited downloads for $72.98 a month.

They are getting rid of their HFC plans and want me to move to their Fibre plan which is more expensive and similar speeds etc. So I figured I'd look around to see if there are any better choices around.

Would love to hear if you have any providers you love or horror stories from any etc.
