Please list things you've seen taken away from state employees, teachers and other state employees. This is my list so far:

  • Employees with a hire date on or after 1/1/2021 are not eligible for retiree health benefits at retirement.
  • State employees previously had premium-free health insurance, with multiple provider options
  • COLA deficit
  • Elimination of longevity pay incentive ($100 for each worked after 10y of service)
  • Leave carry-over cap to 240 hours for comp/vacation (before you would get fully paid out for comp/vac, and now it converts to Sick that does not pay out)
  • Leave program change from Annual Leave to Personal Leave, meaning new hires as of 2026 have a "use it or lose it" policy with vacation time
  • Additional education (Masters) not recognized for additional pay (typically for primary, secondary teachers)

Hi there,

I'm transferring to a four-year college as a sophomore for this upcoming fall semester. I'll be 24 in August, and studying Fine Arts, hoping to study multiple mediums, including Illustration, Printmaking, and Jewelry Design/Metals, with possible minors of Asian Studies/Japanese Language or Biology. I'm also hoping to study abroad in Japan as it's one of my lifelong dreams. Another important factor is that I most likely will not have a car for my first year in school.

I'm having a really tough time choosing between the two options. For some background, I'm pretty artsy/witchy, queer, and alternative. I love spending time in nature, but I can't do huge hikes due to some medical conditions. I LOVE swimming in rivers/swimming holes/creeks/anywhere in nature with mountain water lol. I'm also a biology and science nerd.

I previously lived in Asheville and loved it. It became my home and to this day is one of my favorite places. I made a small circle of both art connections and friends during my time there, and I really love the vibrant arts scene, farmer's markets, coffee shops, and the fact that a lot of bands I like regularly tour there. I have a few favorite swimming holes, hikes, and parks that I would frequent pretty often as well. The food is also awesome!

I have visited Boone a few times too, and really enjoyed it in terms of the school and the scenery, but am less acquainted with the area and local shops/things to do. I do like that it feels closer to nature than UNCA's campus. The Metals Program, Japanese Language Classes, and wide range of study abroad opportunities in Japan through App State are a huge plus.

My Pros and Cons List for both Schools:

UNCA:

PROS:

  • Good Fine Arts Programs + Art building
  • Great dining options (both on and off campus)
  • Botanical Garden + creek that I can dip in
  • Great art community
  • Farmers Markets
  • Lots of great local shops
  • Nicer Campus
  • Concerts
  • Established circle of friends/art connections
  • Lots of swimming holes and hiking spots
  • Queer friendly
  • Nice Housing and Amenities
  • Accessible specialty healthcare (I have a few medical conditions that warrant specialists)
  • Biology minor w/o math requirements

CONS:

  • No Metals Program (but off-campus activities/workshops available)
  • No on-campus Japanese Language Classes (can do online, but not ideal)
  • Less variety and availability of study abroad programs in Japan (only available in Tokyo)
  • Fewer people/social opportunities
  • Hiking and parks are less accessible w/o car
  • HOT in summer

App State

PROS:

  • Metals Program
  • Japanese Language Courses
  • Wide range of Japan study abroad programs in multiple provinces
  • Closer to nature
  • Snowboarding
  • More people/social opportunities
  • Price lake, creek, Daniel Boone Gardens
  • Some accessible hiking w/o car
  • Music/Video/Recording equipment free to use at Library
  • Pretty Campus

CONS:

  • Lack of medical care and specialists
  • Can't live on-campus
  • More Conservative
  • Greek Life + Football
  • Few/worse dining options
  • Minimal/very small art community
  • Older buildings/infrastructure
  • Crowded
  • Less to do overall
  • No concerts
  • Higher chance of living with younger people/undergrads
  • Lack of jobs
  • Fewer networking opportunities and art connections
  • Longer, harsher winter
  • Housing is very limited
  • Bio minor has math requirements

Sorry for the super long post, and if you got this far, thank you for reading! If anyone has any valuable insight, please let me know. Thanks!

Hey everyone! I got into app state and I’ve been applying for stuff and setting life up for my life in app, and I know freshmen don’t usually bring their vehicles to college but I’d love to have mine. Is there any places that I can rent a parking spot from that is still selling AND is priced reasonably? I drive a 86 ram so I’d like somewhere that I don’t have to worry about it being broken into or anything haha. Excited to be at my dream college!!

Summer jobs?

I know it might be a little late to get this ball rolling, but does anyone know of places that are hiring for the summer/potentially extending into the fall?

I have a few gigs this summer that will net me a little cash, but I’d like to have something more steady since my summer internship is unpaid. I have experience as a server and a retail worker, but I do videography, photography, and editing as well.

Hi, my son is transferring too App in the fall and has a spot in the transfer dorm. Can anyone tell me what the bathroom situation is like? For instance, how many people use/share a bathroom?

My 2nd great grandfather Andrew Jackson Greene (1883-1942) who was a professor at Appalachian Teachers College in the first half of the 20th century. He died at 59 from a Kidney disease.

Figured this would be a cool place to talk about this!

Hey! I’m going to attend App state this upcoming fall and I’m thinking of bringing a bicycle with me. I was wondering about the weather and storage though. Do people still ride bikes in the snow? Where do people store their bikes? Is there enough space to have one in the dorm room? Any info appreciated thanks!

Hello friends!

I recently got accepted into App states master program (super excited btw!!) but I’ve only ever been out to that area once or twice. I have no idea where to begin when it comes to apartment shopping out there or what places are the best. A little background my partner and I are looking to move into a 2 bedroom preferred but we are also okay with a 1 bedroom. Our max budget would be $1,500 or $750 per person. We also have two cats! And are very tired of living with roommates.. we definitely have some horror stories. Oh! And our max drive time would be 45 mins or an hour so we’re okay with other close city’s or towns!

Also if anyone has any restaurant recommendations or fun places to go please let us know!!

Thank you!

Hello I’m looking forward to going to my first football game this year. I was planning on going to the season opener against Maine and I just wanna know if that’ll have the best environment or at least a really good one. Idk if it’d be huge difference between this one and a conference game. Thanks

How’s my schedule looking? Interested in friends!

Hey all! Incoming freshman here and I was just wondering if my schedule is looking alright or not. I’m not a morning person so I tried to stray away from morning classes as y’all can tell. I’m majoring in electronic media and broadcasting with hopes of being an anchor one day. I’d love to get to know some people who’ll be there next year and maybe get some tips and tricks from y’all who have already been at App a while. Thanks!

Hi everyone,

You are recommended to take part in the 'AI Use in College Learning Survey.' This study will help us learn more about the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in your college learning process and the role that these tools shape your academic experiences.

This research is being conducted with a professor in Ocean County College.

This survey is voluntary; if you decide to take part in this survey, you will be asked to answer eighteen (18) questions (17 multiple-choice questions and one short response question), which will take around 10-15 minutes to complete.

You can find the survey here:

- By clicking this link AI Use in College Learning Survey, to access it directly.

- By copying and pasting this URL https://forms.gle/ZubsCJabNRVLpVhA7.

If you are not currently enrolled in any college or university, then you are not advised to take part in this survey. Nevertheless, you are encouraged to share this survey with an eligible respondent.

Before responding here are some important things to note before attempting the survey.

The questions included will be related to:

  • Your academic background (only includes your age group, academic level, and area of study)
  • Frequency of AI tools used and which tools you use
  • Uses of AI in your academic studies
  • Your opinions about the use of AI tools in learning and academic achievements
  • View about academic integrity and concerns related with the use of AI tools

Please note that:

  • All data you provided will be kept confidential and will not identify you in any way.
  • Only information related to your age, academic level, and your major will be collected.
  • Information including your email, name, gender, where you study, and other sensitive information will not be collected.
  • The software 'Google Forms' will require you to sign in for you to complete the survey; we will not collect your email addresses.
  • You have the option to skip certain questions and leave the survey at any time you want, and there will be no consequences for you if you decide not to answer the questions.
  • You will not be entered into any draws for prizes. There is no financial incentive to complete this survey.

We appreciate your time and cooperation.

Regards,

A student from Ocean County College
