My son, 16, has received conflicting opinions about his ADHD diagnosis. One provider says yes, the other says not in their opinion. We decided to pursue executive function coaching before medication, largely due to our own uncertainty. He makes honor roll at school and does not have any discipline issues in school or sports.

At home he does no chores, loses personal items constantly and stays in his room on his phone 90% of the time. He is not ambitious at all. He could be a better student or a better athlete but he just doesn’t put in hard work. Simple things like closing the door to the house and flushing the toilet require constant correction. He is not concerned about anything, which is done ways is great. But it’s also pretty challenging from a parenting perspective. There never seem to be any natural consequences that he cares enough about to make a difference. If we want anything done that he doesn’t like doing, it requires constant reminders and supervision throughout. Even then, he does the bare minimum.

How do you decide whether medication is warranted in a situation like this? His PCP says it’s really our call. Our son thinks we are the problem and everything is fine. Is it just his personality? Some days I think it’s just time to give up and let him figure it all out on his own.

My 5yr old son was just diagnosed today with ADHD. We were given some options as to how to move forward and I'm looking for others feedback on their experiences. He's already in talk therapy but we were suggested we could try occupational therapy or medication. Medication would be Concerta in a month once he turns 6, the only thing I've heard so far is it can cause a decrease in appetite. I feel iffy on OT as talk therapy isn't doing a whole lot for him currently as it is besides giving him something to look forward to during the week.

We also discussed possibly putting an IEP in place at school so I'm curious what that looks like and what everyone else has. Obviously I know each kid is different so what may work for yours may not work for mine but just looking for some insight.

Is there anything else I should know going forward with this? Any tips, tricks, opinions are welcome.
