Average rent across U.S. cities in 2026 — the spread is kind of wild [US]

I pulled together some average rent numbers across major U.S. cities and the gap is honestly bigger than I expected.

A few examples:

• San Francisco: ~$3,800

• New York: ~$3,700

• Boston: ~$3,500

• Chicago: ~$2,300

• Houston: ~$1,500

• Tulsa: ~$1,200

That’s a $2,500+ difference depending on where you live.

I made a simple visual breakdown (attached) just to see everything side by side.

Obviously these are averages, I know real prices vary a lot by neighborhood, unit type, etc.

Curious:

– Do these numbers match what you’re seeing where you live?
