Would you rather lose your right arm, your hearing, or all non-work screen time permanently?

Body:

You must choose one of these three permanent conditions. There is no money awarded—this is a straight trade-off.

Option 1: You lose your right arm

Amputated cleanly at the shoulder. If you are left-handed, you lose your left arm instead (you lose your dominant arm).

Option 2: You lose your hearing

Complete, irreversible deafness. Hearing aids and cochlear implants will not work.

Option 3: You lose all non-work screen time

Any screen you look at for recreational or personal use will instantly blur.

  • The Work Rule: You can only see a screen if it is directly connected to your employment (e.g., typing a spreadsheet for your boss, coding, logging into a work terminal). The second you open a non-work tab, check a personal site, or clock out for the day, the screen blurs.
  • The Communication Rule: This includes text messages, WhatsApp, and FaceTime. If your spouse or kid texts you, the screen is a blur. You can only communicate via voice calls or face-to-face.
  • The Daily Life Rule: Banned from Kindles, GPS navigation screens, digital dashboards in cars, TV, gaming, and restaurant QR codes. If you want to buy a ticket, find a route, or check a menu, you have to do it via voice, paper, or have someone else do it for you.

Which one are you choosing and why?

WYR take a $100,000/year contract for 4 years, or a $200,000/year contract for 2 years?

Imagine that you are considering two attractive job offers.

Company A will pay you the total of US $400,000 for 4 years of work, structured as a $20K signup bonus and the annual salary of $95K for 4 years. Company B will also pay the total of $400,000, but for just 2 years of work ($20K signup bonus and the annual salary of $190K for 2 years).

Other than the salary levels, the two jobs are nearly identical: both are in the same occupation for which you are more or less qualified (which is your current occupation, or one into which you would like to enter), in similar locations (either in your current city/region, or in some other city/region/country to which you'd like to move for those 2 or 4 years), and involve essentially the same work in very similar work environments, with the same number of hours or days worked per year. Both employers provide identical benefit packages, as appropriate for the industry and the location, as well as any necessary legal support (such as any occupational licensing if required, security clearance if needed, or a temporary foreign worker permit if working outside of your country of citizenship). You are subject to the same taxes as everybody else in your circumstances.

Regardless of whether you work at A or B, you will enjoy the same level of prestige and social status (if any) that your occupation entails in your community. Nobody (outside of the company's payroll office) knows your salary.

As to the job security, both companies pretty much guarantee your employment and wages for the duration of the employment agreement (4 or 2 years, respectively), as long as you perform your duties in a satisfactory manner. However, an extension beyond that point is very unlikely, as the job is for a limited-duration project. Of course, you can use your gained work experience to seek a job elsewhere after the end of the current employment agreement.

There is no penalty per se for leaving the employment early (other than the repayment of the signup bonus), but if you do so, you may find it difficult to find another job in the field, as the employers all know each other and don't like job-hoppers.

(If salaries or wages in your current occupation or desired occupation are higher than US$100K/year, let the two offers be $X*1.25/yr and $X*2.5/yr, respectively, where $X is the median salary in your occupation).

Which offer would you prefer? Higher pay (B) or longer-term security (A)?

WYR single-handedly fight off a 10,000-strong army of Dwayne Johnson’s attacking your home, have a pedicure, or kiss on the lips your neighbor who is the same gender as you?

In option one, you only have your bare fists. No weapons.

WYR be a male 5’ tall very average physique with $1 billion USD or a male 6’2” athletic physique with 2 million USD. In both instances your physique won’t change no matter what. Like you can’t be 5’ and get athletic build by working out. Likewise at 6’2” you won’t get fat no matter what.

WYR have perfect teeth or perfect complexion?

Teeth - Picture perfect pearly whites. Your teeth are strong and perfectly aligned. They will never chip, get cavities, misalign, or fall out for any reason. Any tooth-related issues you currently have will also instantly disappear. They will forever remain in perfect condition until the day you die, regardless of how well you may or may not take care of them.

Complexion - Skin so perfect, it would make a Cover Girl model blush. No blemishes, breakouts, cracked skin, or scars shall ever fall upon you. Any preexisting condition that you may consider an issue such will be removed, but can be kept if you like it (ie a cool scar, freckles, etc). Injuries/medical scars that penetrate or rupture the skin will revert the skin back to its perfect complexion upon healing.

Wyr be able to bend Temperature, Density, Pain/Pleasure, or Knowledge?

For example, if you choose density, then you are creating and uncreating atoms. So if you shift the density of an iron bar and put it into a rock, then the rock would have more atoms, and the iron would have less. Or if you choose Memory, and you transfer the memory of the existence cats into someone's mind, then the memory will disappear from the original memory holder's mind.

Would you rather live until 60 in your physical prime or live until 120 with the problems of old age?

In the first option, you live until 60 at the peak of your physical abilities and appearance, but the moment you turn 60, you die. In the second option, you live until 120 — I’ll give the advantage that you keep your sanity and mental abilities until the end, but you can still suffer from all the other problems of old age. If you lose the ability to walk at 80, for example, you’ll stay that way until the end; it all depends on your health and luck. In both options, you can still get injured or die normally
