On May 12, on the eve of the Trump-Xi meeting, President Lai Ching-te, at the invitation of the Danish "Democratic Alliance Foundation," delivered a pre-recorded speech at the 9th Copenhagen Democracy Summit. Lai Ching-te mentioned that his planned April visit to Eswatini was postponed due to pressure from China and the blockade of normal air routes. This demonstrates that authoritarian regimes attempt to impose their rules on the world. "Faced with increasing external challenges, the people of Taiwan have never backed down, nor will they succumb to oppression from powerful forces. Taiwan is a sovereign and independent country, and any attempt to isolate Taiwan will not change our determination to participate in the international community."

4. Various of Lu entering the Brooklyn federal court STORYLINE: Trial has begun for a man accused of helping China run a secret police outpost in New York City on Wednesday in New York.

Jurors are scheduled to hear opening statements in the case against Lu Jianwang, who is accused of being an illegal foreign agent for China.

Lu greeted supporters gathered outside the Brooklyn federal courthouse before entering.

Prosecutors say Lu and his co-defendant Chen Jinping opened and operated a local branch of China’s Ministry of Public Security in Manhattan’s Chinatown neighborhood starting in early 2022.

Lu was arrested in April 2023 as part of a series of Justice Department prosecutions aimed at cracking down on "transnational repression,” in which foreign governments such as China work to identify, intimidate and silence dissidents in the U.S.

Lu had a longstanding relationship with Chinese law enforcement officials, according to prosecutors.

Over the years, they say, the Bronx resident, who was also known as Harry Lu, helped harass and threaten a Chinese fugitive living in the U.S. and also worked to locate a pro-democracy activist in California on behalf of China’s government.

The other defendant, Chen, entered a guilty plea on a single count of conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government in 2024.
