Finally pulled the trigger on a VW T5 L2H1 — starting my first van build. Any advice before I do something stupid?

Title: Finally pulled the trigger on a VW T5 L2H1 — first van build. Any advice before I overengineer this thing?

After months of lurking, I finally bought a 2009 VW T5 L2H1 with ~200k miles on it 😅

Found a surprisingly good deal… only catch was it was ~800km away from home.

Our very first “vanlife weekend” was actually done in a standard car, trying to get to the seller... so this already feels like a massive upgrade.

The build

The van definitely needs some love, but I have access to a really solid workshop with tons of tools and people who actually know what they’re doing mechanically, which feels like a huge advantage for a first build.

So far:

  • Added 2 side windows + a roof window
  • Started treating rust on the chassis
  • Trying to revive the factory Webasto heater
  • Planning to make it road legal as VASP in France

The plan is basically to build something simple and reliable enough for road trips and remote work, while still being comfortable enough for longer trips across Europe.

First destinations on the list:

  • Italy this summer (very hot so)
  • Pyrénées soon after
  • and hopefully northern Europe next winter for aurora hunting (very cold, sooo given I can get the webasto running !)

Biggest thing I’m struggling with right now is the water system / hot water setup. I plan to take the coolant loop from webasto/engine to the back compartment for other uses (heat exchanger to air for heating)

Now I’m wondering if I’m massively overengineering this for a first build.

Would love to hear:

  • what you regret doing on your build
  • what you wish you planned earlier
  • smartest “small” upgrade you made
  • and especially how you approached water systems in smaller vans

Will definitely post build progress if people are interested.

first van, helppp

Hi everyone,
looking for some advice and this sub came up so hoping i’m in the right place.
Me and husband are looking for our first van, we have 4 kids so a family of 6.
our family car gave up the ghost last week and a van is something i’ve always wanted because quite frankly they just look fab and are so practical.
when we started searching the first choice (mainly based on looks) was a ford transit custom, however, having looked more into it I honestly am very wary about wet belts, I don’t feel I have enough knowledge of them or really money to confidently own one.
This is where I need some help.
our budget is 14k, looking for of course something with 6 seats and large boot (is that the correct word on a van?), we’ve been looking at a vw transporter (what a beauty of a van) and have seen lots of differing price. At this point we aren’t after all of the campervan stuff as we are a camping family who use a trusty tent.
we’ve come across a T30 year 2008 with 150k miles on the clock, it has full service history and honestly looks in amazing condition and it’s up for just shy ok £10k. This is the bit i’m stuck with, are these vans designed to last a long time? would we be stupid buying such an old van? does the age matter if it’s been very well looked after?
Any help or advice would be very much welcome.
Thanks so much

Considering a 2014 transporter t5 with 220,000 miles - am I stupid?

Hi all - looking for some advice. We’re looking at a 2014 Transporter which seems great but worried about how many miles it’s done.

It’s a 2014 t5 with 2.0 TDI engine and manual. It’s got 226k on the clock which worries me.

Has been cleared for a years MOT but with advisories for the suspension arm pin/bushes and wishbone arm. Had a few advisories over the years as well for oil leaks.

It’s on for £17,995 which seems way too high considering age and mileage… I’m thinking of offering £14,000.

Thoughts?

Recent MOT advisories

Looking at a 2010 T5.1 later today, asking price is £10,600, Obviously for a car that’s 16 years old there is going to be rust and what not, the car to look at looks in tip top condition with only minor bubbling at the bottom of the door frame (in the video he pushed on this and there was no crumbling ect) i’m just a bit worried about the rear suspension corrosion, is this likely to need sorting asap? If so is this something i should stay away from or knock him down on price to factor in the cost of repairing that?
would appreciate your knowledge on this one!
Thanks so much

edit to add, what are we thinking about the oil leak? i know it can be something small but what should i be looking out for when viewing ?

Air fan/ heater died

Hey everyone.
need help finding out what could eventually be wrong with my circuit board on my 1997s VW T4 for the air fan in the passanger room. Some air amways comes out of the outlet but its like 5% of what it should be capable if, also i cannot change it with the steplews control dial. heating does not start anymore. I mean it does turn on SOMETHING, it does a summing noise but airfan is does not move. I do not have AC.

Someone have a diagram for the control circuit?
Or any idea? pls help

Hi all,

I recently rear-ended my VW Transporter T6 (2015 panel van) and damaged the rear bumper, so I’m looking to replace it.

I’ve been browsing eBay and found a few options, but I’m not sure if that’s the best route. Some listings say they don’t fit, and I’ve read that Transporter/Caravelle parts can differ slightly.

I’m based in Germany and wanted to ask:

- Is it better to buy a used OEM bumper from a scrapyard (Autoverwertung) instead of eBay?

- Any reliable VW parts dealers or breakers you’d recommend in Germany?

- Is aftermarket worth it, or should I stick with OEM?

- Anything I should watch out for when buying (fitment issues, shipping damage, etc.)?

- What’s a reasonable price range for a used vs new bumper?

Ideally I’d like something cost-effective but still a good fit without too much hassle. I found this but not sure if its the best option.

Appreciate any advice or experiences 👍

Over 1 year in no bricks and mortar and absolutely loving it, it's a great van and now 32 year's old! Do want a bigger van in time but... This will always be the first
