Thinking of getting a uromastyx, looking for enclosure inspo. Can I see your tanks 👀

For context, when I was 18 I had a uromastyx. I wasn’t planning on getting one, but I worked at PetSmart at the time and this poor uromastyx had been in our store for a year at this point and not only that but they were feeding him crickets and the max temp in his small enclosure was only about 75-80°.

[Crazy side story about the crickets: when I got moved from cashier to pet care associate and learned he was eating crickets, I started giving him a freeze dried veggie mix instead (which still isn’t ideal but we didn’t have any fresh greens in store). Well one day we got audited and the auditer saw the veggies in his tank and asked why they were there, I explained to him that uromastyx’s and vegetarians. He told me all the reptiles are only supposed to eat crickets and made me take out the veggie dish. I put it back once he left but I always thought that was insane.]

So anyways, because of all this I ended up buying him to hopefully give him a better home. I had a 20g tank and was planning on upgrading as he grew. The hottest spot in the tank reached about 110° with the rest of the tank around 90° if im remembering right. He was terrified of me at first but eventually got used to me and I even got to hand feed him his favorite dandelion flowers.

Unfortunately, I went away for a week and had my mom watch him for me. I had one of those enclosures with the front opening doors and apparently she didn’t close the doors all the way and he got out. My mom found him dead hiding in my room somewhere.

My heart has been broken about this ever since. I was planning on having him for 30 years or however long he lived, but his life got cut so short and I still haven’t forgiven myself.

Im 30 now and have been thinking of getting another uromastyx. I want to make sure I have all and any updated info regarding their care which I will definitely fully research again beforehand but im looking for some inspiration for a potential enclosure.

I take very good care of my pets. I currently have hermit crabs living in a 40g tank with 60g topper we built ourselves and they are thriving.

Posting this on here in a last attempt, as none of the other communities allow me to post this. Things have become aggressive at our household. We are attempting to gather the last of the funds needed to move states, and these little ones can't come with, unfortunately. Animal and entire setup included. DM me for serious offers. I just really need them to find loving homes, and need the extra money to move with my wife and two children. I'll miss the little guys profusely, but I have to think of my kids' safety. Thank you to anyone and everyone. 🙏

This is our baby, Terrell. He’s under a year old and is a captive bred Uro. Ornata Philbyi 🦎 we love him so much that I think I want to get an Egyptian one now!

I’d love to see all of yours and your enclosure setups 😊

I was smitten on meeting my first Uromastyx!

I was visiting a nice local petshop and they had this fella, who had already been in their care for a year! He is a 3yr old CB Uromastyx ornata. They let me hold him and my heart melted. He was so chill and licked my hand. I think I found my dream lizard. It was a magical experience and I look forward to having one someday.

I need help please

I got a young uro from a reptile expo 2 weeks ago, they haven’t eaten anything and I took them to the vet and the doctor said they’re extremely malnourished. I was suggested to syringe feed them repashy if it still refuses foods and to soak them twice a week for hydration. I just need literally any other tips this has me stressing so much💔
The temperatures are correct I check 24/7

So I get to be a member of the club....

My wife got me this fella for my birthday/anniversary, and he arrives next Thursday. Sold as an Arabian giant, which would be Uromastyx aegyptia microlepis, but there has been some debate on other sites that he may be the Egyptian (Uromastyx aegyptia aegyptia).

I welcome anyone with significant uromastyx experience to share their thoughts as to which it is, but please explain why you think whatever it is you think as well.

Originally my husband bought one and we named him Spike. Spike failed to thrive and never ate and sadly passed away. The pet store felt devastated for him and offered him this guy for free. Hubby asked if I wanted to keep the name Spike and I said no, he's a D-Von, named after the Dudley Boys of WWE fame lol.

TL;DR I need affordable 4x2x2 closed top enclosure recommendations. Bonus points if stackable.

I need enclosure recommendations. I rescued a geyri oromastyx that came with a 40 gal enclosure with a mesh top. I know he needs at least a 4x2x2. My first goal was to get him stable. Got his temps and lighting up where they need to be (his old home struggled with this) and he's eating great and coloring up well...now to figure out his long-term setup. The room humidity ranges from 35-50%. I got a dehumidifier that I put right by his enclosure, but I haven't noticed much difference. Still can't get humidity below 35%...so I'm assuming I need to look for a closed-top enclosure. What does everyone recommend that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? I saw Toad Ranch and they look really nice, but also really pricey. Bonus points if stackable becuase let's be honest...I'll probably find a reason to snag an ornate in the future as well.

Pretty confident my Uro is a Male but wanna confirm!

I'm pretty sure my little guy, Spino, is a male but I wanted to double check since I am thinking about getting him a buddy, female, on one of my upcoming paychecks.

I’ve had him since October of last year, I was told he is an ornate uromastyx but someone on here said he isn’t so😣😣😣😣

Being Judged

Looking down at me, lol. They are every bit as judgmental as Beardies lol. My monitors, eh they look over to see if I am bringing food and then go back to what phsyco activity they were up to..
This one through, he’s like staring at me, will do this for an hour sometimes lol.

Ok so newbies

We just got these 2 from someone local. The guy had these 2 for about 6 months but not sure on either hatch dates. He got them from 2 separate breeders, not related because he originally had plans to breed them.

He says 1 male 1 female, which we are inclined to believe. Based on size, how old would you guess they are? Im thinking they still aren't sexually mature and maybe at the 1 year mark. (BTW i have small hands)

They both are having issues with shedding, as you can see. We've been working on clearing it up but any suggestions would be appreciated. I want to avoid doing tub soaks but not really sure how to help remove old shed without it. They came with these areas on the tail and hind legs not really shedding properly amd I've noticed its way more difficult to help manually remove the spots compared to all of our other critters or to get them to she properly compared to everyone else.

Also my fiance and I have different opinions about feeding seeds/lentils to the uros. He says no because it can cause them to become dehydrated but from what I've seen its safe to give, so thoughts please!

Male or female Uromastyx geryi?

He has gotten significantly bigger since I got him. When purchased, he was 35g, now he is well over 70. He comes out during the day to bask for and hour or 2 (I’ve never seen him eat in person, but his food disappears while I’m at work). Usually around early / mid afternoon, he goes into his hide that you see on the left and stays there till lights out. What I need from you pros, is suggestions on what to add to his cage to make it a bit more enticing to come out. I have only handled him twice… once when I got him, and once about 5 days ago for a weigh in. I know they are shy guys, but Simon seems a bit more so than others I see posted here.
Also, added the best “sexing” shot i could get (since I haven’t started the handling process yet) to see if his name should be Simon or Simone.

Any tips or advice would be awesome! Thanks!

Hi, so I am thinking about getting a Uromastyx as my second reptile(first is a blue tongue skink). Before that. I do have a few questions to see if he would fit my lifrstyle.

  1. How happy would the lizard be if I skip feeding him 3-7 days at a time once in a while? I go out of town semi frequently(once a month or so)

  2. Should I use 2 basking bulbs in 2 seperate bulb cages to reach the intended basking temperature? If not how?

  3. How should I go about making a bioactive tank for a Uro? Would it be affected by 40ish humidity on the cooler side if I were to keep some isopods and springtails alive?

  4. If I cant go bioactive, how often should I clean up the tank? I have not cleaned my skink's tank in the 6 months ever since I got him due to bioactive, so I have no clue how often I need to clean. I would prefer once every 1 or 2 weeks

Does anyone here use humid hides for their uro? I’ve been giving my lizard collard greens turnip greens, butternut squash, and arid seed mix with a little bowl of water and I just wanna make sure he stays hydrated/doesnt dry out. I’ve been having a hard time to beef him up, he’s picky even when I had extras like be pollen . Does anyone have any tips on keeping your lizard hydrated + thicc. Plus, a picture tax.

I’d like to introduce Merlin our sweet boy and Lord of the household.

He is 1 year old (I think) and was purchased at a reptile expo a month ago.

He is a cautious yet curious Yellow Uromastyx. He watches me work remotely every day and enjoys eating mustard greens, soaked lentils, and purple endives.

Although he is on a strict plant diet, he demands insects and goes on strike if I don’t provide them to him.

I provide him a superstorm very sparingly if he is a good boy (which he is)

I’ve had him for about a month now. He’s not quite ready to be handled but I hope in time he will put enough trust in me to let me put him in my sweatshirt pocket.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Have an amazing day.

-Ed
