Symphonic composers deciding to make the trombone parts either the coolest shit ever or the most boring section in the entire piece
I'd throw jazz composers under the bus too but sometimes those solo backgrounds are really really cool.

It pisses me off every single time
My son plays trombone and we are planning on spending a year abroad in NZ. The school there doesn’t have loaners and ideally he’d like to take his own trombone. Shipping from US to NZ is expensive (and I worry about damage). We’ve never tried to fly with an instrument but it sounds like it probably couldn’t be taken as a carry-on and some have expressed concern about checking it even in a hard case. It’s about $3000 so we really don’t want to damage it. Is renting one there our best option or are there good safe ways to get his there?
i enjoy playing my instrument and id say im okay at it but i keep running into an issue. i HATE practicing and its ruining my love of trombone. if i know i have to practice later it will literally ruin my entire day because i cant stop thinking about it and dreading the inevitable. and whenever i miss a practice or end one early (less than 30 minutes) i feel so terrible about it because i should be working on improving instead of being lazy. whenever i do practice i dont sound up to my standards and it makes me feel even worse about practicing because i dont feel like im making progress. to be honest it makes me feel like i dont deserve any of the accomplishments/auditions ive made and im struggling to find motivation. if i do practice i feel bad about how i sound/not practicing long enough and if i dont practice i feel bad about not practicing.
does anybody have any advice on how to regain motivation to practice?
*TENOR TROMBONE*
Looking for something other than Conn that has an F attachment and is .547 bore. Also if it has options other than a traditional Rotor that's a bonus. I don't have a lot of experience with other horns or know where to start looking so that is why I'm here.
I guess I'm just bored of the tenor I've got and I am interested in trying out some new tech but recommendations of what to check out would be cool so if I go into a shop I can ask to try something specific.
My Bach 50 has a soldered leadpipe. I’d like to convert it to be able to swap leadpipes. Rath seems to have the largest selection. I have an Instrument Innovations Bach to fine/coarse adapter. Will this work with Rath leadpipes? I’m open to using other leadpipes if anyone has advice there. Thanks!
Found this for horn and trumpet and got really excited... of course its not available for trombone parts. Anyone know if there's a plan to expand this series? I'm doubtful, but I LOVE playing these scores and I don't particularly want to pay 600 dollars for a full score of one track.
High Eb ain’t so scary
Saw this advertised to me on Facebook, a “brass doubler’s bundle”, which includes for $2,660 (can choose from) Austin Custom Brass Bass and Alto Trombone, Euph and Bass trombone, or Euph and Alto Trombone. Or all 3 for $4,395… Does anyone have experience with these instruments? Is it something that’s worth the cost at all or would I be better off purchasing used reputable brand horns?
TLDR: Is it even safe to use? How do I restore it? What is the modern equivalent?
Old-school Mouthpiece: Conn-Baritone 2. If googling is right, it could be +100 years old.
Hey there folks, story time.
I came across this old mouthpiece after having forgotten about it for some time. For context, I am a returning player. I played in middle school through college (minored in music). I started as a trumpet player, where in high school I added baritone. At some point, came across this mouthpiece, and came to favor it. I went college with it, where folks immediately commented about how I needed a new mouthpiece because it was too old, and new mouthpieces are better. Cue my departure from the mouthpiece...
Fast forward, and here I am, an adult returning to brass, choosing trombone. It's been almost four years now. Grateful to have returned to music. I came across this mouthpiece again in my old stuff and tried it out. First off, man my mouth tastes like metal. Which is saying something when you do niche metal fabrication work. Second, dots connected. I could squirrel around above C5 (with actually decent sound) and punch out pedals on my student straight horn. My sound was focused, it could sizzle when I pumped some oomph into it and breathing was more intuitive. Third, this thing is way smaller than the 6 1/2 small shank I've been playing on. In many ways it feels like something between a modern trombone and trumpet mouthpiece.
So, here I am. Remembering why I liked this mouthpiece. If anyone has any insight or resources for restoring it, general history and fun facts about the horns and companies in the pre 1950s or what the modern equivalent of the mouthpiece is, I would be grateful.
I was bored so I thought "hmm bass trombone", just a tuba player here.
I’ll spare you the picture. I took a foul tip to the mouth at my daughter’s softball game this morning. Split my lip pretty good. it’ll be fine when it heals. My question is about the when. I am scheduled to play in a concert band a week from tomorrow. it’s set up sort of like a clinic band. we’ll rehearse twice and then play the concert all on one day. The doctor who said I didn’t need stitches was dubious of me playing the gig, but she also didn’t have any experience playing brass instruments. It’s a pretty casual gig and the part will still have two players if I can’t go, so it’s just for my own benefit at this point; and I don’t need to get a sub.
Any hope of getting through that without splitting my face back open?
Found one near me for $1100 is it worth the price? No visible damage and made in Elkhart.
I bought Defaye's In the manner or Debussy weeks ago and it still hasn't arrived. My juries are happening soon, can anyone who has it send me the piano part? I am willing to pay.
Hi,
I have an old trombone and HORTON is clearly engraved on the bell. I've looked for info for years and most responses were "you must mean Holton. So I'm still looking for info about this Tbone and the maker Horton.
Thanks
