No charges for Gastonia police officers who shot, killed armed man at convenience store

Gastonia, NC - The deadly Gastonia police shooting of Derrick Terrell Manigault at a convenience store in January has been ruled justified by the Gaston County district attorney.

The district attorney’s office released a report this week detailing the events that led to the shooting death at Jakob’s Food Mart on Jan. 10, 2026. The report says it happened during an undercover investigation into alcohol sales involving minors, unrelated to the ABC enforcement operation.

A Gastonia police sergeant and a detective working undercover observed a dispute between two men in the parking lot, which then moved inside the store, according to the report.

The two men were identified as Manigault and David Sanders. The report says the detective observed Manigault threatening Sanders inside the store while holding what appeared to be a firearm. The detective opened fire at Manigault because of concerns that he might shoot Sanders and endanger the lives inside the store, the report says.

The gun Manigault was carrying was later determined to be an imitation weapon that was made to look realistic, but could not actually fire, according to the report.

Surveillance video shows Manigault running away from the store, prompting both undercover officers to fire additional rounds at him. Investigators say he fell on a sidewalk and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigators used witness accounts and surveillance video from the scene to reach their conclusion that the shooting was justified and that no charges will be filed against the officers.

Miami-Dade County, FL - On April 13, 2025, when Jaramillo responded to a domestic dispute involving Kelly Hudson and his estranged wife at a southwest Miami-Dade County home.

According to investigators, Hudson’s wife called 911 multiple times, saying her husband had followed her from Georgia to South Florida.

She told dispatchers she was trying to hide at her parents’ home because Hudson was violent, had been stalking and hurting her, and was armed.

Body camera video shows Hudson stepping out of a car while following the deputy’s commands. When asked if he was armed, Hudson is seen lifting his shirt, revealing a gun in his waistband.

Investigators say Hudson then reached toward the weapon, prompting Jaramillo to open fire.

The State Attorney’s Office says the deputy repeatedly ordered Hudson not to reach for the gun, but when Hudson continued moving toward it, the deputy fired several times.

Hudson was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

After reviewing the body camera video, witness statements, and evidence, the State Attorney’s Office concluded Jaramillo’s use of deadly force was legally justified.

Humboldt Park, IL - Police said just after 5:30 p.m., officers attempted to conduct an investigatory stop on a vehicle in the 800 block of North Homan Avenue that was wanted in connection with a shooting on the nearby Eisenhower Expressway earlier in the day. Police said the vehicle, a white Mercedes, fled from police, and a pursuit was initiated.

Body camera video shows the moment two Chicago police officers are approaching a white Mercedes that crashed into a CTA bus after the brief pursuit by officers.

The officers can be heard yelling "get out of the car, or we'll shoot," and the driver then starts ramming the bus and unmarked police squad car back and forth.

Video then shows the officers firing at least five shots at the passenger side window of the car.

Another officer can be heard saying "I see he's hit" as he's approaching the car. Bystanders are heard pleading with the police to "not shoot." Police are heard responding that the suspect is wanted for murder.

The man was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital with multiple gunshots to the upper body and was pronounced dead. He was identified as Derek Jordan.

It's not known the suspect was pointing at officers. Police said officers immediately rendered aid to the man after he was shot, and a firearm was recovered from the car. They have not said if the driver fired that weapon.

The legal team now representing Jordan's family says they're conducting a civil investigation. They said the "the loss of life was unnecessary and was due to the officer's "failure to de-escalate."

Denver police officers shoots suspect in front of an apartment complex armed with a gun

Denver, CO - New body camera video shows the moments Denver police officers recently opened fire on a suspect on 16th Street.

Video from two Denver police officers’ body cameras shows what happened when they responded to a Shot Spotter notification and a report of a shooting on 16th Street and California Street on Sunday, May 3rd, shortly before 2 a.m.

Footage shows officers following someone they identified as a suspect in a shooting into an apartment complex entrance. Officers can be heard telling a person to drop their gun, followed by the sound of multiple shots being fired.

Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas said what he would like people to know after watching the footage.

“I would want them to understand that this was a rapidly evolving incident,” Thomas said. “It literally unfolded in a matter of seconds from when they engaged him, made commands and then ultimately discharged their weapons. And both of those officers have indicated in their statements that they felt an imminent danger of being shot.”

Thomas answered questions after he and Major Crimes Division Commander Matt Clark provided more context to the shooting.

“The handgun is pointed towards the ground in his right hand, and he’s reaching his left hand out,” Clark said while showing a series of photos, some screenshots from the body-worn cameras. “This is the still shot from a frame one second later, the subject is turned. The handgun still remains in his right hand as he’s turning towards the officer and looking at them, and this is right within the frame, or so when the officers discharge their weapon.”

Clark said the two officers were assigned to a proactive downtown deployment near 16th Street, so they arrived in the area within one minute of the Shot Spotter notification.

“They were immediately flagged down by an individual who pointed out the subject who had shot the victim,” Clark said. “The officers observed the identified subject near the entrance of an apartment building in the 700 block of 16th Street.”

Clark said the two Denver police officers discharged a combined total of nine rounds. One officer joined the department in 2022, and the other in 2023; neither had been involved in a prior police shooting.

Officials said the suspect lived at the apartment complex where the shooting happened. He’s been released from the hospital and is currently on an investigative hold for the initial shooting police were responding to.

Miami-Dade, FL - A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office sergeant has been cleared in a shootout last year with an armed suspect who was killed in the gunfire that was caught on camera.

Sgt. Gilberto Crespo was legally justified in the Sept. 16, 2025 shootout that killed 44-year-old Jose Pineda Jr., according to an April 30 Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office closeout memo obtained by NBC6 on Monday.

The incident began when Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office officials said they received a 911 call about a man waving a gun at people outside of Davis Grocery in the 21600 block of Southwest 120th Avenue.

“There’s a guy in a Honda…he’s pulling a gun out on everybody, please send the police, hurry up now,” the person says in the call, also released by the sheriff’s office.

According to the closeout memo, witnesses said Pineda was acting erratically, saying he was “ready for anything” and claiming his baby momma had killed their baby, and he was “looking for something.”

Body camera footage released by the sheriff’s office showed Crespo arrive and tell Pineda, who was in the van, to show his hands, but Pineda responded that he didn’t have any hands.

Moments later, the video shows a barrage of bullets being fired as the sergeant and Pineda both opened fire.

Crespo took cover behind a pickup truck then fired a few more shots and got on his radio.

“Shots fired, shots fired!” he yells. “Watch for crossfire, he’s armed!”

A second deputy responds as Pineda got out of the van and ended up on the ground, injured, with his gun laying next to him, the video showed.

The gun is kicked away as Pineda is placed in handcuffs. He was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

Crespo wasn’t injured, but photos released by the sheriff’s office showed the sergeant’s vehicle was struck by gunfire and the closeout memo said a tire on his vehicle became flat from one of the rounds.

Oakland, CA - Nearly 80 dirt bikes and ATVs were seized during a coordinated law enforcement operation that trapped dozens of sideshow participants on the Bay Bridge, which connects San Francisco and Oakland.

Officials with the Oakland Police Department said that on May 3, dozens of suspects first arrived in San Leandro, where they offloaded the motorcycles and ATVs at a park.

At a Monday press conference, OPD Interim Chief James Beere, along with San Francisco Police Department Chief Derrick Lew, said the riders moved through East Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco. Reports of a “bike takeover” that “quickly overwhelmed intersections” began coming in around 4:45 p.m.

The riders spent more than 45 minutes in the city before returning to the Bay Bridge, Lew said.

Police in Oakland and San Francisco, with assistance from the California Highway Patrol, coordinated roadblocks on the bridge, effectively trapping the riders between law enforcement agencies. The operation snarled traffic in the bridge’s eastbound lanes and caused significant delays for motorists.

Footage of the incident shows riders weaving through traffic in an attempt to escape, only to realize that any potential exits had been sealed.

While most of the suspects abandoned their vehicles and fled on foot, police made nine arrests, including one person who appeared to try to hide in the water. Five of the arrests were for misdemeanor charges, while four suspects are facing felony charges.

Beere also said two firearms were recovered during the operation.

In addition to the motorcycles and ATVs, police impounded several vehicles used to transport the bikes into the city.

More than 100 officers from the three agencies took part in the operation, including traffic enforcement units, specialized motorcycle teams and SWAT officers, according to SFGATE.

Memphis, TN - The Memphis Police Department released body-worn camera video from a Feb. 26 MPD-involved shooting that left Officer Oscar Torres-Molina injured.

Police said Torres-Molina stopped Danell Maxwell near South Perkins Road and Aloha Avenue after noticing an issue with the vehicle’s identification number (VIN). Investigators said that while Torres-Molina was questioning Maxwell, Maxwell pulled a handgun and shot the officer in the face. The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.

Maxwell ran from the scene and was later placed on the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Most Wanted list. U.S. Marshals arrested Maxwell on May 7 at an apartment complex in Cordova, along with his girlfriend, Tokeytha Owens, authorities said.

Owens initially told officers the vehicle Maxwell was driving belonged to her. She was detained for questioning after the shooting, but later charged with harboring a fugitive after investigators said Maxwell was found at her apartment.

Maxwell appeared in Shelby County court Tuesday, where he faces indicted charges of attempted first-degree murder and employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. Officials said he could face 15 to 60 years in prison. The state has also filed a motion seeking life without parole.

North Las Vegas, NV - North Las Vegas police shared photos and videos of its first and deadly police shooting in 2026.

The North Las Vegas Police Department said the shooting happened just after 4:30 p.m. on April 29, at East Gowan Road and North 5th Street. Police identified the suspect as Khalil Normi Jamal Smith, 31.

Police said Smith drove a Ford Flex in the area and crashed into a Nissan Versa. The Nissan’s driver was 44, and she had her two children, 16 and 13, in the car.

Police said the woman and her children were transported to the hospital to treat “minor” injuries. Smith, however, acted “erratically” and “aggressively” toward people nearby. Police said he then climbed on top of his Ford Flex and was armed with scissors.

Officers Manuel Moreno and Donnie Miranda arrived at the scene. The pair ordered Smith to drop his weapon and get down from the car. The suspect continued to act erratically and disobey orders, according to police.

Moments later, police said he jumped from the car and charged toward an officer. Police fired their weapons, striking him.

Police said Smith would disobey orders to stay down and drop his weapon. He got up multiple times again, and officers are seen firing their weapons.

Police were later able to take him into custody and immediately provide medical aid. Police said he continued to act aggressively while in custody, biting an assisting officer.

Smith was transported to UMC and later died, according to police. Had he survived, North Las Vegas police said he would be charged with two counts of attempted murder, battery, and resisting.

Police said Smith did not have a prior criminal history in Nevada nor national databases.

Vestal, NY - The Vestal Police Department has released more information about an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead earlier this year.

On February 25, at around 11:36 a.m., emergency dispatchers received a report of a man, armed with a knife, experiencing a psychiatric episode at a residence on Sequoia Lane in the Town of Vestal.

Upon arrival, police determined that the man, identified as 38-year-old Eslam Hegazy, had made suicidal statements and walked toward the backyard of the residence with a knife.

Officers found Hegazy in a wooded area behind the home, holding a knife, which he refused to drop, despite being instructed by police to do so.

Police say from the time they arrived on the scene to the time shots were fired, Hegazy was told to drop the knife 42 times.

During the altercation, two officers drew their firearms and continued to command Hegazy to drop the knife, which he did not do.

As Hegazy made his way back to the front of the house, officers deployed tasers in an effort to subdue him.

Hegazy fell, but continued to hold the knife, and soon got back on his feet. He then attempted to access a vehicle parked in the driveway, to no avail.

Still armed with a knife, he grabbed a television in the garage and threw it at the responding officers, striking one of them.

A third officer arrived and deployed another taser, which was also ineffective. Hegazy then raised his knife toward the officer, who slipped and fell on the snowy ground.

Hegazy then turned toward the other officers and advanced toward them with the knife, at which point the two officers shot at him, striking him multiple times.

Officers then administered first aid until EMS arrived on the scene and transported Hegazy to Wilson Hospital for further treatment.

During the incident, a total of five tasers were deployed, and a total of four shots were discharged, striking Hegazy, who later died at the hospital from his injuries.

Lee County, FL - Bodycam video shows Florida deputies Taser a 60-year-old child molestation suspect after he suddenly grabs a large kitchen knife.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office says its Fugitive Warrants Unit arrested Patrick Baron on Wednesday morning on an active felony warrant for lewd or lascivious molestation involving a child.

Detectives say they began investigating Baron in January after allegations surfaced that he had preyed on a child and engaged in inappropriate sexual contact.

Investigators say that forensic evidence ultimately secured the arrest warrant.

According to Baron's criminal probable cause affidavit, the child told deputies that Baron showed inappropriate images on a tablet and inappropriately touched her during an incident at a family home. A forensic interview conducted at the Children’s Advocacy Center reportedly supported the allegations.

The victim later identified Baron in a photo lineup, per investigators.

On Wednesday, detectives moved in on Baron at his home to serve a warrant for molestation.

Deputies say they observed him inside his home and issued commands through an open window and door.

Bodycam footage from a responding deputy shows Baron suddenly grab a large kitchen knife and threaten to harm himself, repeating that he was "not going to jail."

A fast-thinking deputy grabbed a taser and deployed it, causing Baron to drop to the ground with the knife in hand, per LCSO.

He was later found to have stabbed himself once in the stomach during the incident, according to authorities. He was treated at Gulf Coast Hospital before being medically cleared and transported to the Lee County Jail.

Sweet Springs, MO - New video shows how a ballistic vest saved a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper who was shot point-blank by an Arizona man wanted for a double murder.

Detectives say 23-year-old Frances Chavez killed his own parents in Taylor, north of Show Low, last year.

Body camera footage from the Missouri State Highway Patrol captured the deadly encounter and the moments the trooper realized his vest had saved his life.

“It stopped it,” the trooper said.

The body camera video released this week starts with the trooper hitting Chavez with his cruiser during a pursuit, knocking him off his motorcycle.

Investigators say Chavez shot both his parents, Cynthia and Troy Templeton, in their Taylor home last June. The Templetons were both members of the Arizona Rangers. The motive is unknown.

The Missouri trooper was following a tip when he spotted Chavez.

Right after Chavez crashed the motorcycle, the video shows him trying to get back on it with the trooper close behind.

The body camera shows that Chavez started shooting at the trooper at point-blank range. The trooper fired back, hitting Chavez.

The video shows Chavez hitting the ground and continuing to fire rounds at the trooper. The trooper fired back a second time.

Chavez died at the scene.

Toledo, OH - A Toledo Police officer who was reassigned for his controversial arrest of a teen girl is facing additional community backlash for allegedly berating library staff during a police response last month.

Authorities have not released the name of the officer at the center of the controversy, but multiple sources have confirmed that both instances involve the same officer.

The officer who pushed a 15-year-old girl to the ground while arresting her after stopping a group of teens for walking in the street was the center of discussion at a Toledo City Council meeting on safety. During the meeting, Councilman Nick Komives revealed that he had heard from concerned constituents about that officer’s recent behavior.

Internal Toledo Lucas County Public Library reports describe an incident on March 11 in which a woman came to the Lagrange branch and began causing a scene, screaming at the library staff, threatening them and hurling racial slurs - all in front of a group of children.

Library staff said they called police when she refused to leave. While waiting for TPD to arrive, the woman walked out and into traffic. The responding officers were able to find the woman and speak with her. They let her go.

Several library staffers questioned why the officers didn’t arrest the woman who had just threatened them. The responding officers said it was the suspect’s word against the staffers, despite having a room full of witnesses, according to the library branch manager.

“One of the officers got very agitated and began shouting at her about how he doesn’t come to her job and tell her how to do it,” the branch manager wrote in a report. “He then repeatedly asked her where she got a law degree from.”

That bothered one of the library staff members, who said she felt something more should be done.

According to the library report, the officer “continued to escalate the situation and shouted and stepped to her and said he would arrest her if she continued.” Then another library worker stepped in trying to calm tensions.

Another library document described the officer as berating and belittling her.

Library documentation claims police did not take a report about the incident. The officers told library workers that they’ve dealt with the suspect multiple times.

Toledo Police say the officer did not face any discipline for the library incident.

Manhattan, NY - The NYPD released bodycam footage of a fatal police-involved shooting at Grand Central Station.

Police fired at 44-year-old Anthony Griffin after he attacked three people with a machete on April 11 at around 9:40 a.m., according to authorities.

Police say the victims, who were all older, were left with serious injuries.

Detective Ryan Guiffre, assigned to the Transit Bureau working overtime, and his partner, Detective Anthony Manetta, were standing on the mezzanine of the 4, 5, 6, and 7 subway lines at the time of the attacks.

The footage shows the detectives walking toward the platform stairs, where they briefly speak with one of the victims.

A short time later, they are seen confronting Griffin as he walks up the stairs with the machete in his right hand.

Giuffre orders Griffin to drop the weapon multiple times, but he does not. Instead, he walks back down the stairs to the train platform, while Giuffre and Manetta follow.

They again plead with him to drop the machete and say they will get him help.

Griffin continues to hold the weapon and shout while moving toward and away from the detectives.

Griffin can be heard proclaiming, "I am Lucifer," in the video. He then moves toward Giuffre with the machete, its blade facing outward, when Giuffre fires two rounds from his gun, striking Griffin.

Police took Griffin into custody and took him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he died.

The first victim of the machete attack before the shooting was an 84-year-old man who was slashed on the 7-train platform. Police say he suffered significant lacerations to his head and face.

The second victim, a 65-year-old man, was attacked on the 4,5,6 train platform. He suffered slash wounds and an open skull fracture.

Authorities say the final victim, a 70-year-old woman, suffered a laceration to the shoulder.

The victims are all expected to make a recovery.

Fort Myers, FL - A Florida mom was arrested Saturday after chaos erupted at a youth football game — ending with an adult allegedly kicking a child, authorities said.

Renee Lambert was taken into custody and charged with child abuse without great bodily harm and resisting an officer after she allegedly stormed a Pop Warner game at Brooks Park in Fort Myers and kicked a juvenile player, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies working security at the park said they were called to the field after a fight broke out between players following a play. Video reviewed by police showed Lambert running onto the field and kicking a juvenile player, authorities said.

Lambert claimed a child hit her with a helmet, prompting her actions, but investigators said that claim was not supported by the evidence.

Bodycam footage captures a tense, profanity-laced confrontation as deputies attempt to detain her.

"So you're mad at them for hitting me?" Lambert asks.

"I’m mad at an adult for attacking a kid," the officer responds.

"Stop! You’re detained right now," the officer later commands.

"No I’m not. Goodbye… get your hands off me," she fires back.

"You are being pointed out as being a suspect right now — you’re detained," the officer says again moments later.

She then demands, "Where's number nine? Go get number nine."

"A kid?" the officer asks.

"Yes."

"You’re an adult," he responds.

The footage ends with a chaotic scene as deputies attempt to place Lambert in handcuffs.

In a separate incident last month, another Florida mother was arrested after allegedly leaving her 12-year-old daughter alone at a bar in Universal CityWalk while she went drinking elsewhere, officials said.

Amanda Thorpe, 33, of Lake Mary, was charged with child neglect after allegedly leaving her daughter behind to go drinking at another bar, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

When officers arrived, FWPD says 33-year-old Jacob Lee Leckenby stabbed an officer. Police fired shots in response, hitting and killing Leckenby.

The officer was stabbed multiple times and was released from an area hospital following several days of treatment.

The FWPD officers involved have been identified as Reginald Ellington, Nicholas Williams, and Myles Mayfield. The officer who was injured has not been publicly named out of respect for his privacy.

In January, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office ruled that they found the officers were justified in their use of force.
