Influence Me - European Soccer

Newer to soccer, in my third year as a Crew fan (what a season to become a first time STM 😵).

I want to get into a European soccer club, but honestly don't know how to go about choosing. Would love to pick something up that has a community following in Columbus in case I can find watch groups around the city.

Open to all thoughts.

Bike Valet question

Has anyone here used the Bike Valet right off the trail leading to the stadium? I've heard it's free. I want to use it this Wednesday but I wanted to see if anyone knew the process or if there was a cost involved. Thanks for any info in advance

Hands Off McCoy Park

I don't give a rat's ass about soccer but I do care about the disadvantaged youth whose park is being stolen by the Crew's billionaire ownership. Nice job!

Ramirez didn't want to leave

Sorry I know this is an X screenshot(begging to not delete, if it gets deleted then i will accept 😞) but I saw this interaction on the app and was incredibly sad. He was a reliable striker and now we get to watch him score for Austin.

Definitely makes me worry about Issa Tall in the FO.

Christian deserves better and so do the crew fans.

Columbus Crew Post-Match Quotes vs New England (Rydström, Arfsten, Chambost)

Head Coach Henrik Rydström

On the transition from the first half to the second half, when the Crew’s play seemed disconnected

“I understand the question, and that was basically what I addressed to the players right now in the locker room. What we did in the first half I'm really pleased with. What we said in halftime was also those things that, ‘OK, we have played some really good football. We are taking the lead. We create.’ I also think we defended well. New England is quite a tricky team, but overall, really good defending. We talked about don't play on the lead, don't try to defend anything. Maybe I shouldn't mention that because maybe that creates those thoughts. I think exactly what happened in second half was that we more covered than took a step forward. They didn't create anything. They had a wide free kick, a soft free kick, and then they score on that. My goal is that we don't get affected by those kind of things, but of course, you get affected. You have felt you have played good. You could maybe have scored a second goal and then a side free kick and then it's one, and they get, of course, also a little bit more energy, but still they didn't create anything. It was a lot of possession around us, but we were then too passive with the ball. I would say it's like the mental aspect of the game that you have chased the ball a little bit without them creating and then you want to rest when you have the ball. We can't do that. We need to understand that we need to be even better in the second half with the ball so we force them to defend longer. We were not good with the ball. After they scored 2-1, then it shifted, and we had the ball and then created some situations. Overall, first half really good; second half, not good enough.”

On if there was anything different he wishes he would have done during the game, while noting his comment about the halftime message of don’t play the lead

“What I meant was that maybe I shouldn't have mentioned that we don't play and try to defend the lead. I think one of our messages to players is always that we go for the next goal. They didn't change something. Sometimes the opponent does something, and you need to react on that. No, they didn't so it was more them playing around and dropping out with players. We got a little bit like it sucked the energy out of us a little bit. What I could have done – not in halftime because the first half was so good – it's to change formation and to maybe change players earlier. Danny (Midfielder Daniel Gazdag) played a game Wednesday, a lot of minutes. (Midfielder) Hugo (Picard) played 90 Wednesday. It was quite obvious subs there to come to put in more energy. The center midfielder has to cover a lot of ground in the second half. I could have changed earlier, but then on the other hand, I think both (Midfielder André) Gomes and (Midfielder) Dylan (Chambost) were good centrally. Yeah, if I would have changed the formation… It's also we felt that if we just get some fresh legs into the pitch, we can also take over the game like we showed in the first half.”

On surrendering a goal on a set piece following a foul for the first time this season

“Usually, I must say I don't know how many free kicks from the side you need to face before you statistically concede. It's like 90 or something. We knew that they were good in that phase, but of course, it's more a disappointment that it should be easy to defend. We conceded late on a corner against Toronto. We conceded this one. It hurt us a bit. That kind of goals, we keep working on those kind of things. So far, we haven't improved the [offensive] set plays this season. That's something we need to fix because you need some easy goals sometimes.”

On the multiple heated moments between the teams in tonight’s match and if that’s the result of what’s happening on the pitch or combined with frustration from the season results thus far

“No, I think it shows that we care. It's nothing negative. I haven't seen the situations fully. I also am very careful with complaining about the referee and decisions, but I think there were some key moments where it didn't really go our way. The natural instinct is to react on that. Overall, I think the players behaved very well. It's been tough losses. The games we have lost, it's in the dying minutes. Now, it was 10 minutes of [stoppage] time, but it's the end of the games so it hits you a little bit emotionally. Like I've said before, it's also games that we could have won. It's not that we are outplayed or the players are like beaten like this, but the frustration is bigger also when you concede late. I don't see the reason to the reactions is from that.”

On the Crew’s offensive performance tonight in the first match after Forward Wessam Abou Ali’s season-ending injury

“The first half, again, I think it was good. We controlled the game. We pushed them down. We had a lot of situations around their box. Hugo missed a big chance. Max had some other situations, and Danny. I think we compensated the loss from Wess in the first half. In the second half, I also tried to put in [Forward Jamal Thiaré] because we played without the No. 9, and I wanted Jamal to come in and give us that presence, but it didn't play out so well. In the second half, we didn't handle it well. It goes from the back line the whole way up. It's more due to, like I said, I've been in the exact same mental state as the players on the pitch when I played, and that's why I recognize it. I said to the players, also, ‘Play football. We have shown we can do it.’ Even if it's been games where I've said that, ‘OK, this is not the football I maybe want us to play, but the last three, four games, if I include also the [Lamar Hunt US Open] Cup has been more in the way I think we should play.’ In the second half when you stop, it's enough for a couple of players. If a couple of players stop doing what we need to do, be playable, have the runs in behind and move the ball, then we will get pressure on them so that insight to understand that I need to play the game 90 minutes or if I come in and play 30 minutes or whatever it is. We haven't shown that so far. I'm so certain that will change soon. This game will be also one. We had a couple of those where you sit after and like, ‘[Expletive], we could have changed the momentum in the game with a couple of more brave actions.’ They wanted the ball more in the second half. Their players wanted the ball and tried to take us on more than we did with them. In that sense, you can say that they deserved the victory. We need to do that to win more games.”

Midfielder Max Arfsten

On the difference between the first and second half

“Yeah, it's tough right now, but I think we just, once again, got the lead and then stopped playing as aggressively, offensively and defensively, and then you saw what happened. It's very frustrating. But yeah, I have to rewatch it. That's what my feeling was.”

On the disconnect between halves in multiple games this season

“Yeah, I think maybe us as players on the field, need to do a better job of being extremely communicative with one another, depending on the flow of the game, and just finding a moment to be like ‘hey, what we're doing right now, we need to do better’ because at the end of the day, we're the ones playing the game and I think we need to figure it out ourselves in certain moments. And yeah, that's my feeling.”

On the communication struggles within the team

“To be honest, we're trying to figure it out as well. It's tough right now. There's no sugar coating it. It's a tough run of form. And we all have been a part of winning teams with this Club, so we know this is not the standard and we definitely want something different for ourselves, in terms of results and giving the fans what they want. And yeah, all I can really say is, right now, we're doing everything we can to try and flip the script.”

On if the tense moments during the match were from built up frustration of the season or just from this match

“A little bit of both, for sure. I know I hit that guy (Ilay Feingold) at the end. I was just pissed. It had nothing to do with him. Yeah, I think we all just got aggressive and frustrated as the second half went on and I think it's natural.”

On what the path forward looks like and how to improve

“It doesn't sound super amazing to say, but I mean, we just have to take it one day at a time. Train hard, like I said, just get on the same page as players on the field and really just take more accountability, myself of course included. I think we all just need to be more accountable in terms of, we know what we're doing right now is not working, so we have to do something to chang and it's on the players. It's on us. So, we just have to figure it out and it begins every day in training.”

Midfielder Dylan Chambost

On the difference between the team’s play in the first half to the second half and what went wrong

“It's tough to answer straight after the game like this. I think the goal we conceded killed us, If I can say like this. After all, they get the momentum in the game and we struggled to press, to control the ball like we did in first half. We lent them the ball. Yeah, simple as that.”

On what the team needs do to defend set pieces turning into goals

“Same. I need to rewatch the goal. Yeah, it was a good delivery, a good head, but we need to be better on that, be more aggressive. And we know we don't have big guys, so we have to avoid to make fouls. That's the basic thing to do.”

On his thoughts on the team’s communication

“I think we communicate on the pitch. Yeah, we communicate. I mean, our first half was very, very good so, it's not like we didn't play at all today. We need to keep the good things and understand what happened in the second half. Basically, we just have to work. The communication within the team is good. We talk a lot every day. We know we need to make progress, and we're going to work. We have a game in three days, four days, and we have to be focused on it.”

On if conceding a late goal adds to the team’s frustration of the loss

“Yeah, this is what it is. You don't have always what you deserve in soccer, but maybe we had what we deserved today. Our second half was not good enough. Of course, we are frustrated, we are disappointed, but like I said, we have to keep the good things. We have three games at home, I think, now in front of our fans. So, we really want to keep pushing, to keep working and to win in front of the fans.”

On having a congested schedule during a rough stretch of results

“Yeah, it's a good thing. You don’t have a lot of time to think about the last game. That's a good thing. As a player, you always want to play games, and we have this opportunity on Wednesday, so we will be ready.”

Center Backs

Are our other center backs that bad to the point that we have to continue watching Camacho start every week? Love him as a person but this season he got his ankles absolutely broken against Nashville, gives up such a dumb penalty tonight. He’s 35 years old and the game is too fast for him. I just really don’t get it…

Vancouver Whitecaps fan trying to connect with anyone involved in #SaveTheCrew

Hey r/themassive,

Whitecaps supporter here, I volunteer as the Director of tifo for the Southsiders and as I’m sure you know we’re currently in the middle of our own fight to keep the Caps in Vancouver. We just launched savethecaps.com to organize and rally the fanbase.

Someone suggested we reach out to the people behind #SaveTheCrew. What you all pulled off is genuinely one of the best supporter stories in North American soccer. I think that if we can replicate what you all did then we will be able to cheer on our club for years to come.

If you were involved or know someone who was, I’d love to connect and pick your brain. Any insight on how you organized, built pressure, got traction - I’ll take whatever you’re willing to share.

DMs open. Thanks

A Scarf Grows in Brooklyn

Obviously not the result we wanted, but it was a big day for Crew York as we saw our scarf hung in the hallowed hall that is Banter Bar, the premier soccer bar in Brooklyn and our home since before day one of our little community. Cheers to us and Go Crew Forever. 🖤💛🖤💛
