I have come across the nightingale as an image and symbol in a lot of poetry. What does it symbolize?

I as a hobby translate lots of older Christian poems. In a lot of them, especially ones about Mary, there is used imagery that evokes nightingales. What is up with this? What are the connotations of the nightingale more broadly? What about in Europe? What about in Christianity? Any ideas or thoughts?

I attached a screenshot from a translation of an old German/Dutch poem that I did that is about the annunciation.
