Fri Apr 18, 2026 - Okay to enjoy climate change?

https://preview.redd.it/unkk1krb1tvg1.jpg?width=620&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bcd2b79c12530766c89dfefaf9134e5260cf4bf2

I'm guilty of letting snowpack levels cloud over beautiful weather, but being a Debbie Downer isn't productive.

The experts at Quartz have spoken. The cognitive dissonance created by “climate change distress” and “ecological grief" shouldn't prevent us from smelling the roses. Comic relief exists for a reason.

Yes, channel the angst toward activism, but also touch grass now 🌱
Have a great weekend!

Mon Apr 13, 2026 - Food Crisis & Best Before Dates 🥫

It's heartbreaking to see perfectly good food go to waste 😭

Best before date reflects quality, not safety

Given how many people are hungry and how food waste hurts the environment, this is not a fun party fact, but knowledge that can help our neighbours and the planet.

There are tons of resources on this topic, but Greater Vancouver Food Bank has a nice table to sum it up
https://foodbank.bc.ca/whats-new/best-before-dates-vs-expiry-date/

Now you know. Don't let best before dates derail good food and good acts ☺️

Wed Apr 15, 2026 - What are the Greener Proteins? 🫛

Step aside, low sodium/fat/sugar, all eyes are on protein now. Edamame tortilla and whey donuts anyone?

When it comes to eating healthy, if you wish to factor in sustainability along with variety, macros, and whole food, check out this chart 🥳

Greenhouse gas emissions per 100g of protein. (Credit: Poore, J., & Nemecek, T. (2018). Additional calculations by Our World in Data. Additional data by Hannah Ritchie) https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20221214-what-is-the-lowest-carbon-protein

It's no surprise ruminants are the most polluting, but are you surprised to see prawns and dairy so close to the top? Pork is better for the sake of the planet 🤯 (but probably not for your health or animal welfare)

Changing how we eat might feel daunting, but mixing things up can be a piece of cake (or chicken). Having anything but beef for lunch reduces GHGs by >60%. If you're feeling fancy, try tofu for >96%, a power move. 💪

Thai restaurants are great for this. Food is always delish, and you can rotate between beef/pork/chicken/tofu. Yay to easy wins and red curry!

Tue Apr 14, 2026 - Invasive Plants boo, Native Plants awesome 🌱

Invasive plants might look delightful, but they could hurt local flora and fauna 👎

A lot of ornamental plants — Common Periwinkle, Cypress Spurge, etc — are not native in Vancouver 🥲

  1. This gardening season, learn what to grow instead of invasive plants
    https://bcinvasives.ca/play-your-part/plantwise/grow-me-instead/

  2. Check out this beautiful chart made by u/rubicube1 to see more native plants of Vancouver 💚
    https://www.reddit.com/r/vancouver/comments/1ks8azq/the_native_plants_of_vancouver_a_taxonomic_chart/

Common Yarrow is a favourite, don't let its gentle feathery leaves and delicate flowers fool you, they're perennial and super hardy! (mine is still alive, that's something)

  1. BONUS POINTS
Learn to say the native plants in hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓
    https://museumofvancouver.ca/indigenous-plant-guide-in-hnqminm
See if you can spot these lovely plants — oregon grape, wild plum, berries, ferns, cedar, etc — on your next nature walk 🌳
