When to replace race skis?
I have been racing Masters and NASTAR race league for the past ten years. Like a lot of athletes who get the bug, I have owned and tested a lot of equipment. Mostly GS cheaters in different lengths, brands, radius, etc. My current favorite ski is a Head i.speed. 180, 18 radius. 66 mm waist. The shape is unique. The tail is drawn in. I think Ted convinced Head to try different shapes and this was one he came up with. (I gather he wasn’t allowed by FIS to race this shape.)
I bought them in a parking lot in New Hampshire from a guy whose son had stopped racing after high school. Pretty sure they were $100 or so. Anyway, they were in reasonably good shape and have been great to ski on. After a grind and sharpen, they have been my go to for beer league and Masters. At this point while I like the ski, i’m questioning how much life they have left. They are the 2015 or 2016 model. They do have some edge left, and the bases are in good shape.
How do you assess whether a ski is still lively enough for racing or resort hard-pack carving. Is there a way? I mean, when do you move on? I’m tempted to replace them (e-speed Pro probably) but chasing the new new thing hasn’t worked in the past. The driver wins the race more than the car.
