When I look at the videos widely shared on YouTube, and the pictures of the aftermath, I feel defeated. As a parent and a member of this community, it is deeply disturbing to face this reality.

I found myself wondering where I was at 2:21 p.m. on Monday, May 11. I drive through 30th Avenue four times a day while taking my children to and from school.

I feel that we have failed both of these girls — the one receiving the beating and the one carrying it out.

Violence like this is rarely spontaneous. It builds over time. It is usually the result of a long series of events, circumstances, and warning signs that were never fully addressed.

I wish we could do more, wherever we can, before situations reach this level.
