Vertical Diner closing 6/14

I know not everyone likes the place, but I saw on Instagram that they’re closing down next month! I live only a couple minutes away, so it definitely makes me sad as there’s a lack of all-vegan establishments in SW Portland/Multnomah Village.

Their menu will be dwindling down over the next few weeks and the staff will be smaller. Apparently they did inform the staff of the closure back in February, which is nice considering a lot of places in PDX have just been shuttering seemingly overnight lately.

Cube of Truth this Saturday and Sunday with the founder of Anonymous for the Voiceless

A bunch of experienced vegan outreachers are coming from Seattle, California, and Canada for the second stop of Anonymous for the Voiceless's second stop on this summer's US campaign. We will have TV screens showing standard practices in the animal agriculture industry in public, and will be talking to anyone who stops to watch with the goal of getting them to understand that veganism is the action that follows from the values they already hold.

The founder of Anonymous for the Voiceless, Paul Bashir, will be hosting this event, and will be running an outreach workshop beforehand on Saturday at noon. This is the perfect chance for you to learn how to speak up for animals, or to see how vegan outreach has evolved in the past few years.

600 SW Morrison St, Portland, OR 97205, United States
and Saturday 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM and Sunday 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Pioneer Courthouse Square

Hello friends. I'm ashamed to say I stopped being vegan for a few years recently, but am excited to say I'm starting my journey returning to it. Going through the sub looking for everyeone's new fave things in town. I really miss a lot of the places I used to go regularly so if anyone has tips for similar I'd love to hear it! Out in Beaverton now so anything out here too but we go into Portland frequently!

Places I miss the most :(

-Devin's Dive

-Sushi Love

-Back to Eden

-Yuan Su (maybe still there? a super long drive for us now though)

-new seasons for the wok and vegan burgers made to order lol

-portabello

-black water (is that still around?!)

-Sasquatch

-Grilled cheese grill

-off the griddle (still there I'm p sure but we haven't made the trek yet)

-DC veg

-there was another place off N Mississippi I think that had amazing vegan sushi I can't remember the name....?

I make decent vegan italian so no worries on that front but if anyone has great recs for breakfast/brunch or their fave burger I'd love to know! And any bakeries that still exist! TIA! We left town for a few years and I feel like once we got back all the faves were gone :(

Holy smokes, you guys. I just had the fried chick'n sandwich from the Vegan Phoenix at the BG food carts in Beaverton. If you covered it in hot sauce and put it in Portland, it'd be everyone's favorite immediately. The texture is shockingly similar to actual chicken, but more than that, it's just a tremendously delicious sandwich. The black pepper is great and the Caesar salad is a nice compliment. Love this community, and I'm grateful to hear of any of the good stuff over on this side of town. Ok, thanks. Enjoy!

Anyone know of a vegan therapist licensed in Oregon? Outside of Portland is fine too, I'd be fine with virtual. I know that any good therapist could potentially "get it", but I'd rather try finding a vegan one first. Queer would be great too. Thanks in advance!

Honestly after living in such a "progressive" city how are there so little vegans here. I thought that being liberal is about love and compassion for all?

Why do all the progressive people here only care about issues where they can literally make no change. Like how many no kings marches are we going to have. Being vegan makes the most change at a signal moment possible that directly affects so many different issues at once.

What do y'all think is better a republican vegan or a liberal who eats meat?

We had an amazing turnout at our foie gras city council hearing yesterday! Well over 50 people showed up in person, nearly 75 people gave verbal testimony in support, and we had over 400 written testimonies submitted in support. Thanks for showing up if you were able to make it.

If you’d like to watch the recording of the meeting, it’s available here. The foie gras item runs from about 0:35 to 2:00.

There wasn’t time for a council discussion, so there will be two more readings for our foie gras ban. The first will be council discussion and the second will be the actual vote. I’ll share more details about these meetings as soon as I learn them!

In the meantime, we can reward the councilors who are already supportive (Mitch Green, Jamie Dunphy, Sameer Kanal, Angelita Morillo, and Tiffany Koyama Lane) with support! They have really stuck their necks out to get our foie gras ban to full council!

The best way to support Mitch, Angelita, and Tiffany is through campaign contributions. They’re all up for re-election this year and are participating in Portland’s Small Donor Elections program, which means your impact is magnified by 11 times!! If you’re a Portland resident, your first $25 is matched 10-to-1 by the city. A $5 donation actually puts $55 into their campaign!

Donate to Mitch Green

Donate to Angelita Morillo

Donate to Tiffany Koyama Lane

Since Jamie and Sameer aren't up for re-election this year, they’re not currently in a fundraising cycle. We can still flood social media, news articles, and Reddit threads with supportive comments to show that we have their backs.

Here’s some guidance on how you can engage with press coverage that we’ve received to help show public support ahead of council discussion and the vote!

I’m super proud of how this community showed up yesterday and eager for Council to discuss! Let's keep this momentum going!
