[4/16/26] Target 🎯 Pokemon + Yu-Gi-Oh RC5 Will LIKELY Drop Tonight! Here’s what you need to know >>>
👋 Welcome to r/PokemonTCGParents — start here!
Whether your kid just tore open their first booster pack or has been begging you for a specific card or set for months, I’ve been there. Here are the top tips I swear by for getting cards for my son:
Where to Buy:
* CVS, Walgreens, Five Below, and Family Dollar are your best friends. They often carry booster packs at or only slightly above MSRP.
* Local game stores (LGS) are underrated! Staff are often knowledgeable and genuinely helpful. My LGS reserves 50% of sealed product for under-12s at MSRP, and my son joined a Pokémon league there too.
* Avoid Facebook Marketplace and eBay sellers for sealed product. Prices are inflated and packs can be tampered with.
* Join a Discord alert service for real-time retailer restocks and live purchase links. Hands down my #1 “Mom win” and it’s how I scored product directly from Pokémon Center US.
What to Spend:
* A standard booster pack should cost $4–$5. Seeing $10+? Walk away.
* Booster bundles (MSRP $29.99) and Elite Trainer Boxes (MSRP $49.99–$54.99) often offer better value per dollar than single packs.
* Set a budget before you hit the store. We all know kids have a gift for finding the $80 item!
Red Flags:
* Anyone selling “guaranteed hits” as that’s not how this works!
* “Rare lot” listings with no individual card values listed.
* Beware of FOMO! New sets are often scalped shortly after release at extortionate prices. Don’t fall victim to the hype, patience will pay off and product often restocks.
* Prices 2–3x above MSRP at retail stores in person and online. Top perpetrators are GameStop and Macy’s!
Talk to Your Kid:
The best thing you can do is learn a little. Ask them what set they’re collecting, what their favorite Pokémon is, what cards they still need. I get so much from sharing in this hobby with my son, and he’s even taken to designing his own cards!
Use This Community:
Post a photo, ask a price check, share a find. No question is too basic here, we were all beginners once.

Digital Pokemon Binders
I found a digital binder feature for Pokémon TCG collectors and my kid has been obsessed with it during Spring Break (me too, honestly).
I wanted to share a website I’ve been using called Saffron City. It has an easy to use digital binder feature that lets kids (and let’s be honest, us parents too) organize their Pokémon card collections online.
My son already made his first binder on my account called “Birds” and filled it with 35 cards, most that he doesn’t have yet. He picked Piplup, Articuno, Swanna, Skarmory, and more. Watching him curate his own themed collection without any help was honestly the highlight of my week :’)
It’s been a great way to get him engaged with the hobby digitally, especially for cards he hasn’t pulled yet (or we can’t afford!!). He’s really enjoyed “collecting” cards he sees at tournaments or in friends’ collections and has added them to a wishlist binder too.
Highly recommend checking it out if you’re looking for a fun way to keep your little collector organized! Has anyone else tried it?
