The new update made the game unplayable for me and genuinely removed any resemblance of joy or hype for the game that I once had.

I don't even know how the update managed to pass to live servers because it feels like a downgrade in every way. Animations look worse, it removed the personality and charm the game had. It looks like something someone could manage to do in 1 week of work instead of however long they actually worked on it. The character update was announced back in 2022 roadmap, yet this feels like pre-alpha version of effort.

The game feels uncomfortable to play and every skill expression or enjoyment that you could do, quickly placing salt for example or being able to go through the items etc., is just gone, all for the sake of "realism", which this update pushed away. Models and animation look more unrealistic compared to the previous one.

You can still have fun and like the new update, but for someone who's been playing the game since 2020 and watching Insym and other content creators play the game, the game just doesn't feel the same anymore. Reworking perfectly functional and fan favorite map like Tanglewood instead of Prison or Highschool is wild.

I wish I could play the original Phasmophobia before the item rework update because that's the game I fell in love with.

After item rework, which was fine, the developers just started putting less effort into the game and it shows. Back when Dknighter was sole developer on the game, it felt like game had better charm and more consistent updates with the theme of the game.

You can still have fun and enjoy the game, but I don't have faith in developers that they can make the game as enjoyable as Dknighter managed to do back in 2020.

The latest update sealed the deal for me.

Phasmophobia v0.17.1.0 - Patch Notes

Welcome back, Ghost Hunters.

We want to start today by apologising for our Player Character Update that launched last week. It’s clear we missed the mark on this, and didn’t deliver on our promises to you. Your feedback and your reviews were justified. Our team has grown significantly over the last year, and with that comes a higher standard that, in this case, we failed to meet.

Tomorrow, May 12th, our next update for Phasmophobia will bring with it many fixes, iterations and changes to the game that bring things in-line with our vision for this update. While we know improvements can still be made, we believe this will provide a much better experience for everyone playing Phasmophobia. 

Over the past week, we’ve read feedback from across the entire community. The frustration and disappointment has been clear. Below is a look at the patch notes, with changes and fixes built on that feedback, that will go live with tomorrow’s update.

New

  • Added a 5 second delay after you die to allow you to select a ghost in the journal

Changes

  • Salt will now get instantly placed at the start of the animation instead of the end.
  • Most equipment hold poses have been changed to fix several visual issues including wrists, elbows, arms and the equipment's position on the screen.
  • The T3 Sanity Medication animation will no longer play in Multiplayer.
  • The Tier 1 Igniter is now open so you can see how many matches are left.
  • Removed the inventory swapping animation to allow for instant swapping of held equipment.
  • Prestige cosmetics are now free after they are unlocked based on your Prestige level.

Fixes

Character Model Fixes

  • Fixed an issue that caused the heads of character models to look incorrect when the player looks up and down.
  • Fixed an issue that caused problems with the character rig upon being revived while crouched.
  • Fixed an issue that caused character models to fall down incorrectly upon death.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Non-VR player character’s feet to clip below the ground when standing still.
  • The player characters feet will no longer float in some areas.
  • Fixed the characters walking animation when below 50% player speed.
  • Fixed an issue that caused character model mouths to be open when the player moves to the right.

Ghost Fixes

  • Fixed an issue that prevented the Yurei from fully closing doors.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the Raiju to flicker lights outside of Hunts.
  • Fixed an issue on 42 Edgefield Road that caused the Ghost to get stuck in multiple rooms and not be able to reach players in the garage lockers.
  • Fixed an issue where Ghosts in the Grafton Farmhouse Attic would wander too often outside their room.

Environment Fixes

  • Fixed an issue that caused doors to move incorrectly when holding the Tarot Cards.
  • Fixed an issue that caused doors to be blocked by other players.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented some doors on Bleasdale Farmhouse from opening correctly.
  • Fixed an issue that caused doors to become detached from their hinges.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Sunny Meadows Restricted to load into the full Sunny Meadows location.
  • Fixed an issue that caused two boomboxes to be displayed in the lobby.
  • Fixed several issues that caused inconsistencies with the animations when grabbing objects.

Equipment Fixes

  • Fixed an issue that caused held equipment to stutter when turning.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Head Gear to be misaligned while crouching.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented players from being seen on the CCTV through Tier 1 Head Gear.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the Tier 1 Firelight being blown out to be heard throughout the map.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the Tier 2 Photo Camera audio to play when using other equipment.
  • Fixed several issues that prevented the Tier 2 and 3 Firelight from working correctly.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the CCTV screen to be displayed on a Video Camera when first grabbed.
  • Fixed an issue that caused usability issues with the Head Gear after toggling night vision on/off on a Video Camera.
  • Fixed an issue related to the above that caused the Tripod to become invisible.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the Ouija Board planchette to float.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the watch’s timer to desync upon death and revival.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the Ouija Board and Haunted Mirror to drop on their sides.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the wrong Tarot Card to be seen by other players when drawn by the player using them.
  • Fixed several visual issues when grabbing an Igniter while holding a Flashlight.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Flashlights to become invisible when being dropped to pick up another item.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the Flashlight to appear when holding the Journal and pressing using the Flashlight.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Spirit Box responses to be heard incorrectly
  • Fixed an issue that caused a still image to be displayed on the Tier 3 Video Camera when leaving the Van.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the wrong exterior doors to lock on Bleasdale Farmhouse.

VR Fixes

  • Fixed an issue that prevented VR players from opening the upstairs hallway left side closet door.
  • Fixed an issue where VR Players had to grab objects twice to pick them up.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Head Gear to disappear from the player’s hands when grabbed.
  • Fixed an issue that caused a VR player’s screen to spin when dying or reviving if immersive animations are enabled.
  • Fixed an issue where the audio of a VR player dying could be heard across the map.
  • Fixed an issue that caused objects to appear incorrect in a player’s hand.
  • Fixed an issue that caused items dropped by a VR player after they die to not appear for other players.

Other Fixes

  • Fixed an issue that prevented Voice Chat from working when the player was Dead.
  • Fixed an issue that would cause the Journal to remain in the player’s hand while Dead, if it was opened while dying.
  • Fixed an issue that caused misaligned text with photo names in the Journal.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the light from a Dead player’s Journal from being visible to players that are alive.
  • Fixed an issue with the Journal that made it difficult to navigate between pages and tabs.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented the “Welcome Back” audio from playing.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented the ‘’Doors Starting Open’’ custom difficulty setting from working correctly.
  • Fixed an issue that caused players to hear Dead players opening and closing their Journals.
  • Fixed an issue that caused a soft lock if Alt + Tab was used during the death animation.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented the Legacy Badge menu options from being selected.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the journal objectives tick colour to be incorrect.
  • Fixed an issue that caused door sounds to play when not moving and be heard across the map.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the ID Card foil animation to not render correctly.

While tomorrow’s update for Phasmophobia contains more than just these fixes and changes, it was important for us to share these with you to see what we’ve been working on while feedback has been coming in.

We’ve reviewed our roadmap and while we’ll provide an update on this later, we have made the decision to release a second Player Character Update with additional content and changes that will include:

  • Additional cosmetic options to allow you to further personalize your characters.
  • Improved character animations, aimed at quality and speeding up the gameplay.
  • Adding the legacy badge customisation to the shop customisation screen.
  • Improving equipment usability and speed.
  • Various quality of life improvements to the player character and overall gameplay.
  • Many other new features, fixes and improvements.

We know we now have a long journey ahead of us to earn back this community’s trust. We’ve begun to put plans in place to share more of our development processes with you on the way to 1.0, allowing you greater visibility into the work we’re doing and what you can expect from future updates for Phasmophobia. We ask that you stay tuned to our channels for more information on all of this in the future.

So it makes sense now..

They had to ‘rush’ the character customization, all because the collab THEY ACCEPTED involved having customization options which THEY DIDN’T have in the game yet. Which, mind you, have apparently and presumably been in the works for YEARS now but were still not done yet.

Time management and planning are nowhere to be found and left rotting in a ditch somewhere.

And now I will file my own post on here; it’s crazy to me to see how non-critical some people are. It feels really bland to just forgive and forget and continue. Just as said on another post; there is no need to raise pitchforks, but they sure as hell don’t have me back yet with this patch fix update.

They are acting like they worked their asses off for us to fix the stuff we didn’t like. Mind you they told us to just ‘keep playing and you’ll get used to the jankyness’

Yes that tells they are reading what we are saying. They said they took on more people? How in the heck could the quality be so crap then? How can it be that the time management of this update was so badly planned? How can you decide to release it to the game and leave it at that? How can you be so ignorant and think this quality of delivery is acceptable? And now they are saying they will bring out a second update? SERIOUSLY? They couldn’t have done that in the first place?

Mind you, they fixed all the animations and stuff within a couple of days work. This tells you a LOT on how long they have probably worked on this update for if they can EASILY fix all this. And it baffles me to the freaking bone how lax they are about all this which does make me even more frustrated.

Its all promises without any delivery of quality. You cannot tell me that it was because of the Alan Wake update since that is of recent events. The character customization has been (presumably, but I do not think so) in the works for years and now they had to randomly hurry because of the collab and thats why the quality is crap? And they are surprised that we expect higher standards since their team has been expanded? Is that such a weird expectation??? No it is not.

You’ve ruined my favourite game!

This was my favourite game to play with my friends and we’ve just managed to sit down and play together for the first time since the update and we’re all incredibly upset. This was our favourite game to play and our only game that we’ve played for the last year together in our little time that we have to spend. And this update has ruined so many things and changed so many things for the worst that we’ve all just uninstalled. I can’t imagine why they would have a game that was almost in perfect state and almost ruined it in every way. To top it off the last game we played just crashed after spending all the time finding all the words and the dolls only to crash and not get credit for the game.

Done.

Half an hour the night of the update and we spent more time remaking lobbies because of the crashes. Had a bug the one time we made it to a map and I had a black screen the entire game until two people crashed and we had to back out anyways.

Uninstalling. I'm done. Entire group is disenchanted with the game now. I hope the collab was worth it.

Wow I can really feel all the heart and soul that went into this update. Really a passion project if I ever saw one.

As someone who is always actively TRYING to give the devs the benefit of the doubt I just... I can't see how someone saw this and said "wow this is okay"

Kind of strange to go back and delete comments from days ago. Especially after the mod team confirmed they've been in touch with the devs.

The State of the Game…

I think it’s fair to say that if Kinetic don’t get their stuff in order very shortly, this game isn’t going to be doing well…

This update has broke FAR more things than it’s fixed and the very little it did fix is overshadowed by the fact that the game is borderline unplayable.

Two years… TWO. YEARS. That’s how long the ‘character customisation update’ has been listed on roadmaps for. They pushed this back for two entire years and then rushed it out because of a collab solely for monetary gain.

The greed is unacceptable and we should be making that clear.

I encourage anyone who hasn’t already to leave a negative review on the store pages. We ALL deserve better than this for a game that’s been in early access for over half a decade while making millions.

Alan Wake update (Potential minor spoiler)

It's no secret that the last update was very controvertial, but I had hopes that things would be fixed for the Alan Wake update. This was my first experience after updating the game today.

Nothing is interactable. Everything I hover over with my mouse is something I'm trying to click on, but nothing is working. To close the game I have to Alt+F4. The jittery movement when holding something could be explained by framerate, but I had a consistent 60FPS.

Developers, please...

Edit: I just wanted to add that this is not a hate post of any kind, I am not in the discord and I can't report through the game since I can't click on anything. I am unable to do anything. I couldn't quit the game, and I couldn't start a game. All I could do was pick up the pieces of paper in the lobby.

I love Phasmophobia, and I have fun when I play it, but this update is quite literally unplayable since I can't interact with anything. I just want the game to be functional, and in this case, it is not

The REPO dev team is the complete polar opposite of the Phasmophobia dev team

Seeing the REPO cosmetic updates, as well as all previous updates and the update videos, has really put in perspective just how awful Phasmophobias dev team is.

I wish the game was actually run by people who seemingly play it and put out good polished content.

Just wanted to give props to Semiwork for being awesome so at least one game I love has a great dev team.

Seriously. Who thought this looked well enough to publish?! the fucking stutter. the bendiness of the legs, just why? and the worst part is the stutter when you have your video-cam equipped shit gives you straight up motion sickness.
