The hate goes to far (i say that as a mythology fan and a critic of the footage, that we have seen so far)

I feel like, the discussion about this movie should be about the mythology aspect and how good or accurate Nolan portrays the source material. And so all the posts about the actors'skin colours annoy me, because i have big problems with a lot of other stuff, that isn't discussed at all

For example, Odysseus in the promo scene absolutly sucks at archery. Which would be a problem, if he was known for his archery. Oh right. But no, we have to talk about Lupita Nyongo

Or the Viking ship. Why is it there. It timetravels and culturetravels. But no, Elliot Page is in the movie

Or the Lastrygonians, who wear plate armor and fight like coordinated warriors, instead of barbaric giants

Maybe we could actually be critical of the movie? It's not going to be a masterpiece, just because Nolan makes it. No director is perfect. And maybe we can stop giving grifters a plattform by talking about the grifters. Because that won't make them disappear

The movie isn't out yet. And i don't actually think it' going to be bad. I am critical of it, but i don't hate it. I'm just disapointed by the lack of mythologicly accuracy (which you don't have to agree with, by the way). So maybe, we could focus on the mythological aspect and not the ethnicity of the actors

This is not a blame game. The mythology community is not part of the grifting and i understand Nolan fans are annoyed aswell. So, how about we are actually consequent and ignore the toxic shit throwing on Twitter. For all our mental health's sake

accuracy.

I read an article speaking of Nolans love for this story; but he's going on to change facts that are historically set in stone; is this not offensive to Homer?

A Positive Post (And That's That From Me)

Just wanted to say my conclusion on the controversy even if nobody really needs to hear it.

These ancient epic poems were never set in stone from their offset and creation thousands of years ago and in fact were loosely formatted many times throughout history by different scribes, or so my translated version informs me in the preface. So I will gladly state that there is nothing wrong with this new adaptation in the form of film by Mr. Nolan.

Imagine what the ancients who knew this story would think if you told them that every campfire on the surface of the Earth would sing to them and show them visions of the entire story all within one sitting of 3 hours or so?

I personally couldn't imagine what that would mean to them, but things are the same now as they have always been.

So therefor I have no problem with Achilles having been a female, or the most beautiful woman of all time being more controversial than the actual main female protagonist, who instead is the loyal and heartbroken Penelope.

And Tom Holland would make an awesome Paris as well as Telemachus.

TL;DR: Nobody would be complaining if Achilles survived getting punctured with an arrow to the heel where I come from. And I'm all out of bubble-gum.

do you think this sub will turn into a circlejerk like what happened to r/Morbius?

obviously, if the movie ends up being either good or mediocre, people will forget about it quickly, but if it ends up being bad enough, the sub will be taken over by people set on cracking jokes about it

The odyssey New Movie

“I’m a big fan of Christopher Nolan and I’m genuinely excited for The Odyssey, but personally I’m not really on board with making a transgender character the main focus in a classic story like this.

For me, adaptations of legendary epics and mythological stories should stay as faithful as possible to the original source material and characters. It’s not about hating anyone — I just prefer when iconic stories keep their original identity and atmosphere instead of changing major elements for modern trends or representation.

And honestly, when you compare iconic roles from past epics — like Brad Pitt in Troy — the vibe and portrayal feel completely different from what Hollywood is pushing now. Back then, the focus felt more on creating legendary, timeless characters that matched the tone of the mythology itself.

Curious what everyone else thinks. Should adaptations evolve with modern audiences, or should they preserve the original vision as much as possible?

Why the Odyssee?

I‘ve really been thinking about this. First off: I like Nolan. I find Oppenheimer to be beautiful! Out of the ones I saw, Tenet was the only one, where I felt that the movie was more complicated and indecipherable than it was worth.

I find that Nolans strength is a close look at one character, where we gradually explore the important aspects of that character, in a non linear way, with interesting concepts to plotwise explain that non linearity, that also help us find the right angle to read the movie.

Now, he‘s making a movie about the odyssey, and I can‘t decipher why, when there‘s another character in greek myth that would fit perfectly for his style. Is Odyssee really such a „nolian“ story? For me it seems more similar to the hobbit with an adventurer with a home drive, and a very basic episodic structure, that doesn‘t really have any need to be tampered with: It‘s part of the main appeal.

Now: There is a story in greek mythos, where the main character does disturbing things, and a self fulfilling prophecy is involved (lending already itself to an already non linear story). Yep! I think Nolan would be wise to rather make a movie about the original mother fucker: Oedipus.

So: Am I just not getting something here? If you, dear reader see something in Nolans narrative strengths, that lend themselves to the Odyssee over other greek myths, please feel invited to comment!

Everything seems underwhelming about the movie till now.

Can somebody enlighten me why I should pay money to watch the movie? Everything looks so bad. Even the cast seems unfitting. The costumes don‘t look good.
The trailer looks bad, too. I was very happy when it was announced, but I am not sure if I want to go the cinema for it.

Edit: spelling
