Hi! I just binged the entire series last night, and I have a few unanswered questions I’m wondering if anybody can help me answer (also knowing that season 2 is in production and some things will be answered as the show goes on)
What does the name Siaja mean? (same question could be asked for other characters with Inuit names, I’d just like to know from someone who’s Inuk themselves instead of trusting Google!)
Is ”Bun“ Siajas daughters legal name or a nickname?
Where did Siaja go to school/ what for?
Why did Siaja not take Tings last name? Is that an Inuit practice?
Why choose Prince of Wales Island for the geographical location of Ice Cove? Similarly, does Ice Cove have an Inuktitut name for itself?
Why is Helen having trouble with cultural differences like salting the steps if she’s been in Ice Cove for 23 years and is married to an Inuk man (at least, presuming she is married to an Inuk man from the photo on her desk and her surname being May-Qaqsuk)
Was “Tings cousins baby“ just a throwaway joke for the show?
Hopefully this theme is more explored in season 2, but how come we see Ting emotionally abusing/ gaslighting Siaja and this is never brought up or discussed except for Millie calling Ting an asshole?
Is Bun shooting a caribou a general cultural tie-in for multiple Northern indigenous groups? From what I’ve seen online, caribou are almost entirely absent on Prince of Wales Island. Is this just put into the show as fiction to represent her bonding and growth, or are we to believe Ice Cove actually has a caribou population?
Hope these aren’t too redundant- I’m absolutely loving the show!
