NHK BS4K here in Japan started airing the 4K remaster of Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water in April, Sundays at 9pm, and we haven't missed an episode. I actually bought a new 4K TV specifically for this rebroadcast — that's how much this show means to me.

I first watched it when I was 7. The only other time I'd revisited it was at the 2014 Tokyo International Film Festival, during Anno's "World of Hideaki Anno" retrospective on the big screen.

Now my daughter sits on the rug in front of the TV every Sunday night, totally locked in on Nadia and Jean, and I get to watch it again through her eyes. The 4K transfer looks incredible, but honestly the real luxury is sharing this show with my kids 35 years after it first aired. Sundays at 9 have become sacred in our house.

P.S. Honestly can't wait to experience the legendary Island arc animation in 4K. Going to be a real treat.

I'm happy to get to watch Nadia on Sunday mornings! Last week was episode 4 with the submarine battle, and this week is the highly-emotional episode 5. So this is a 4K remaster, but honestly I cannot tell the difference between this and the bluray. I'd have to see them side-by-side somehow but even then I don't really care because I'm not picky and it's why I'm not scrambling to buy a 4K bluray player. I have a friend who swears he can hear the superior sound quality of an ATRAC music file on a minidisc over a standard MP3, but I can't.

Hello, fellow Nadia fans!!

I'm Shinbe, I'm an intermediate digital artist and story-brainstormer (bc I rarely actually finish my concepts). I recently saw Nadia and became HOOKED. Incredible characters and arcs, amazing world building, etc.

However, as all Nadia fans know, it had some hiccups; that being the Island and Africa arcs, and the two unnecessary relationships at the end between Sanson and Marie, and Nemo and Electra. The series also leaves a lot of questions about backstories and Atlantean lore.

Therefore, I am working on a reboot! "Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water (Reconceptualized)"

This remake will fix all the issues of the old series, create historically and mythologically accurate lore to patch plot holes, and hopefully expand upon the universe of Nadia.
. Members of the Nautilus crew will be named and will get an episode showing how they came to work on the Nautilus.
. Nadia's backstory in the circus will be explored in more depth.
. Jean's relationship with his father, and his love of engineering will be expanded on.
. Nemo's backstory NEEDS expansion; maybe even a few episodes worth, or it could be shown in dreams Nadia has while aboard the Nautilus.
. Atlantean history, abilities, culture, inventions, etc.

I also plan to SLIGHTLY redesign the characters- really just give Nadia and Nemo darker skin.

I will make another post discussing current changes I've worked out soon.

I was hoping y'all could tell me
A ) What did you like about the original series?
B ) What did you dislike about the original series?
C ) What do you want from a reboot?

Tysm!!

Gave Nemo some melanin supplements

IDK why they struggled SO HARD with keeping him dark man. Like- he's Nadia's dad, and she's supposed to look Kenyan if I recall. I feel like she ain't dark enough, either. Gonna darken them both up. I gotta make Nemo's hair darker, too.

A couple of Nadia hologram buttons I bought off Mercari

There's a set of Nadia buttons that are blind-wrapped. I do not know where these are being sold, but they've been popping up on Mercari and YAJ. I got this set of Nadia wearing her white island dress.

So, here are some established "headcanons" or aspects I plan to add to the Nadia Recon.

1: SANSON AND MARIE DO NOT GET MARRIED. Yes, rejoice. Instead, Marie lives with Sanson, Hanson, and Grandis, and she learns from all three of them. Hanson teaches her engineering and science, Grandis teaches her manners and how to find a good man, and Sanson teaches her self defense- not that she actually gets to defend herself, because he always shows up to DECK whoever looks at her wrong. She often writes letters to Nadia and Jean, telling them how she's been.

2: NEMO AND ELECTRA DON'T GET TOGETHER. More celebration! Instead of completely overlooking the fact Nemo told Electra he saw her as a daughter, and raised her since she was 15, Electra struggles with her romantic feelings for him for a while, but never brings it up again, and does her best to become his daughter. Through this, she gets character growth: she matures, she bonds with Nadia as a sister, and she ultimately shows her deep respect for Nemo. Nemo recognizes her efforts and lets her know, in his own way, that they're appreciated. This also backs up Nemo's characterization as a broody, depressed man who believes he doesn't deserve human comforts because of what he did to Tartessos- he would never pursue a romantic relationship.

3: NEMO, NADIA, AND VENUSIUS WILL GET DARKER SKIN TONES. Oh yeah, gotta black them up. Also, I'm playing with the idea that royalty have blue swirling tattoos across their shoulder blades, tattooed in infantry, representing where the wings would sprout after death and ascension, and once 20, the tattoos are elaborated upon, and extended down the spine to represent rooting themself into their role as royalty. The Tattoos have a single word inserted into the design. For Nemo (this is just an idea) the word is "Archivist", representing the fact he was one of the last Atlantean kings, and had to archive Atlantean history so the kingdom and Species wouldn't be forgotten.

4: ROYALTY CAN MANIPULATE THE BLUE WATER. In the anime, we see Venusius, or Emperor Neo, bend and psychically alter the Blue Waters. I think it would be interesting if all Atlantean royalty had this ability, but not as refined as Venusius' ability. For example- if Nadia felt threatened, her Blue Water could turn into a small dagger for self defence. Or if Nemo, as king, could turn his Blue Water into a ceremonial object, or a trident. After all, the Blue Waters ARE just Sacred shards of Orichalcum, which, in Nadia, is solidified light. However, this aspect would not be used often, because it requires strenuous mental training to master.

That's all I have so far that are guaranteed inclusions (unless someone better versed in the lore tells me otherwise lol) Thoughts??

The Parallels between Gargoyle and Electra I noticed

I realized something.

Nemo's wife didn't have to die. She could've been sent into exile with Nemo. But Gargoyle murdered her. Why? What was the benefit, the cause?
He manipulated Nemo's son into turning against his father, but that was because he was royalty who could handle the Blue Water. But what was the strategic angle of killing the Queen?
Was it strategically motivated at all, or was it personal?

Gargoyle overthrew Nemo. He should've killed him. The entire plot would never had happened if he'd just killed Nemo.
But he couldn't, because he'd known him his whole life. (They were canonically friends for 30 years, so since Nemo was 5.)

Gargoyle genuinely thought he was in the right, and hoped Nemo would see his ways. When he didn't, he overthrew him to preserve the Atlantean race and to hopefully create world peace after necessary bloodshed. But it all fell apart because he cared about Nemo too much.

In the finale, Gargoyle was face to face with Nemo after 13 years. 13 years of chasing and waging war against him. If your enemy was face-to-face with you, wouldn't you LOVE to be the one to pull the trigger and win?
But he makes Nadia and Venusius do it.

After 13 years, HE STILL CAN'T KILL HIM FACE TO FACE. He can bomb his ship, he can send a DEATH RAY at him, but can't look him in the face while pointing the gun.

You know who that reminds me of?
Electra.
Think about it!
Both Gargoyle and Electra built their lives around Nemo.
Both originally agreed with him and were loyal, then disagreed with Nemo when he got "soft".
Both were his closest companion and betrayed him, hurt him.
But despite all of their rage, they couldn't kill him.
Why?

Love.

Jean and NadIa statue by Prime 1 Studio

Didn’t see it post here. Well, it is a Prime 1 Studio work, so the quality will come with hefty price. I‘m curious what prompt them suddenly launches a Secret of Blue Water statue though…
