1988 wasn't just a good year for Hip Hop, but it can be considered the year that birthed the blueprint of lyrical mainstream music for the genre over the next four decades. From the birth of the West Coast's gangsta dominance to the smooth and lyrical style of the East Coast, these are the albums that defined and shaped the golden era of Hip-Hop:

Public Enemy – It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
N.W.A – Straight Outta Compton (release date debated)
Big Daddy Kane – Long Live the Kane
Slick Rick – The Great Adventures of Slick Rick
EPMD – Strictly Business
Boogie Down Productions – By All Means Necessary
Ultramagnetic MCs – Critical Beatdown
Jungle Brothers – Straight Out the Jungle

Pretty wild how many dope projects were released in 1988. These albums took hip hop from the block to the global stage and the genre pretty much never looked back.

What you think? Any albums I missed?

Couldn't be me personally, but I'm wondering if there is anyone who actually picks Dre as their favourite RAPPER of the group? Whenever I see discussions about people picking who they think is the best rapper in the group, I have never seen anyone pick Dre. No hate on Dre, but I get it, obviously his production/mixing is his MUCH stronger talent (legendary status) and of course he was a big piece of the group overall.

But I don't think Dr. Dre is a bad rapper by any means. His flow is fine, his bars land, he's on beat, his delivery is fine. I think the other rappers in the group are just way more unique, they have more distinct voices, or are more talented when it comes to lyricism (particularly Cube and Ren). We know already that Dre didn't write a lot of his lyrics (which is fine, at least he doesn't pretend like he did) so to me it makes sense that he is able to deliver bars, but they feel kind of... Soulless? Bland? But I don't mind hearing a Dre verse or two on a song if he's collaborating with other artists on the song, such as with N.W.A. I think he adds a nice balance in the song when he's doing one verse and there's Eazy and Ren doing their own verses, too. The three of them add different variety and balance to a song when they all have equal parts, which is one of the reasons why I love N.W.A's music so much; having different rappers with their own individual styles collaborating together to make banger songs.

Anyway, maybe I got off-track, but I'm just curious if there is anybody who really does pick DRE as their favourite rapper in the group? Like, putting Dre's production talent aside and just him as a rapper.
