Why is dungeon synth (somehow) considered metal?

Why is dungeon synth (somehow) considered metal?

I do not consider myself am enjoyer of metal music in general, I just like a few subgenres like (symphonic and usual) black metal. After looking around different artists I found out many album intro/outros turn out to be dungeon synth-like, other times they have a dungeon synth track.

I am a fan of December's Fire and Solanum (I know they didn't exclusively produce dungeon synth.), yet since both were finished/discontinued projects, I ended up asking for some recommendations and somehow I got recommended literal metal bands. Not even black metal which is a tiny bit similar, so that low-key had me confused.

So that's my question, how come dungeon synth is considered a metal genre?

edit: of the answer is related to producing it, please explain it, I want to get into it

I’ve been listening to a lot of Incantation and Immolation recently and it made me think about this. I recently saw a review of one of the more modern Incantation albums where the reviewer talks about the strengths of the album but says Incantation is held to a higher standard before rating the album 3.0/5.0. I don’t feel that was a fair assessment because the old records come with the advantage of nostalgia and Incantation’s newer records still knock the socks off most of the newer bands they influenced. If it was some random band it would have almost certainly added +1.0 at least to the reviewer’s score.

In the case of Immolation, I think they face the same hurdles but actually have continued to make even better records in some cases. I think even though they’re viewed as highly consistent, that doesn’t do them justice. Getting almost universally praised for late stage albums makes me believe it is actually their best work and I know they’ve been my favorites. Nostalgia is a beast and they manage to overcome it almost every single time.

Let me know what you think and what bands you think this applies to.

Great New Album by Sunn O)))

Sunn O))) remain that volatile blend of doom metal and ambient music. Perfect for listening to as night falls and darkness fills the room. Pure sound beyond notes and melodies. Although the band includes a few more riffs, minimalism is still taken to the extreme. Two musicians, two guitars, and two paintings by Mark Rothko. This time there are no collaborations, with the exception of the sound of the wind, water flowing in a river, and birds. No space for anything, not even a title, except for the band’s name. Released by Sub Pop, the original home of Earth, the band that inspired the formation of Sunn O))).

Name an album that wasn’t a big success but you think it’s amazing.

Queensrych got a backlash on Promised Land. Geoff Tate said their fans thought it’s too philosophical and that they tried to be Pink Floyd.

I think it’s an amazing album and was hoping they continued in that direction.

One of my favorite bands but I can't listen to this no more. what do you think about it? I think even the most simple cover would be WAY better than whatever they're doing and somebody needs to tell them to stop... 🤮🤮
