Takachiho Gorge Stress

Hi all,

I'm planning a trip around Kyushu for early next year. and am looking at spending 1 night in Takachiho Gorge. There seem to be 2 main things to do there: hire a rowboat at the gorge, and take the Amateraseru Railway trip through the mountains.

Booking these things however seems not easy.

Tickets for a rowboat go on sale at midnight my local time two weeks before the desired date, and apparently sell out within minutes. Even if you think you've booked a slot, if you don't finish the transaction quickly enough, it goes to someone else.

Tickets for the Amatereseru Railway can only be bought on the day, in person, and also sell out quickly. They go on sale at 9am, and we probably not be able to get there until 10am at the earliest.

So potentially, I could end up not being able to do either thing I wanted to, and wouldn't even know until the very last minute.

Is this worth the stress? Should I just give Takachiho a miss? Do I actually have a good chance of getting tickets for both?

Any advice is welcome. Thank you

Shimeiso is a wonderful traditional Japanese house surrounded by a beautiful garden where spring water flows naturally. It is a place with a very calm and relaxing atmosphere, so I really recommend stopping by and enjoying a matcha tea there, for example.

Help me reduce my itinerary Kyushu itinerary

Hello,

I'll be visiting Kyushu for 15 days in the last 2 weeks of November. As it is always the case with Japan, I end up with way more things I want to see than days I have available.

After my research, my current itinerary is way over the 15 days budget and I'm looking for some suggestions on what to remove. Also, if there's a must see that I missed, please let me know, but I'm more interested in what you would consider not worth it given limited time.

I will rely only on public transit, I will not rent a car.

My current itinerary is:

Fukuoka: 3 days

• 1 day: Karatsu day trip

• 1 day: Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine day trip + Ohori park

• 1 day: Hita day trip

• 1 day: Ohori park and the city

Nagasaki: 3 days

• 1 day: Dejima island, Peace park, Teramachi temple district

• 1 day: Glover Garden and Inasayama ropeway

• 1 day: Unzen Onsen day trip

Kumamoto: 3 days

• 1 day: Kumamoto castle and Suizenji Park

• 1 day: Aso montain day trip

• 1 day: Kurokawa Onsen

Kagoshima: 3 days

• 1 day: Shiroyama Park and Sengan-en garden

• 1 day: Sakurajima volcano day trip.

• 1 day: Maruo onsen day trip

Beppu: 4 days

• 1 day: Beppu Ropeway and Mt Tsurumi

• 1 day: Rakan-ji temple day-trip

• 1 day: Myoban Onsen

• 1 day: Yufuin day trip

Miyazaki: 3 days

• 1 day: Miyazaki Jingu and Minka-en traditional farmhouses museum

• 1 day: Aoshima Shrine and Udo Shrine daytrip

• 1 day: Obi Castle Town day trip

• 1 day: Takachiho Gorge day trip

Thank you!

Kyushu itinerary suggestions (aug-sept 026)

Hi everyone!

Me together with my bf and a friend (3 in total) are currently planning our trip to Kyushu and are looking to gather some feedback and suggestions from people who have experience traveling in the area.
Our itinerary is more or less defined, but we’re very open to adjustments, tips, and ideas to improve it!
Here’s our rough plan:

(28-30.08) We’ll arrive from Osaka by train to Fukuoka, where we’ll stay 2 nights.

(30-01.09) Then we’ll rent a car, took our friend from the airport and move towards Kumamoto, considering it as a base. (any short suggested stop-spot?)

From there, we’re planning 2–3 days of day trips around (e.g. Mount Aso; Takachiho Gorge and others but we’re very open to other ideas in the area!)

(01.09-03.09) After that, we’ll spend 2 nights in Kurokawa Onsen (mainly to relax, but also happy to explore nearby if there’s something worth it)

Then we plan to pass through Yufuin and Beppu (probably as a day trip / stopover)
before heading back to Fukuoka by the night of Sept 3

(03-06.09) Finally, we’ll stay 2/3 more nights in Fukuoka, and maybe do some easy day trips nearby

After that, we’ll fly to Okinawa and stay here for a week (but that’s another story ehehe)

Thank you in advance for any suggestions and tips.

I don’t want you to fill my trip, I’m looking for some suggestions and hidden and traditional gems to visit along the way :)

What to do with my car?

Hello everyone!

We have travelled all the way from Hokkaido to Kyushu, we’ve posted our car to sell and haven’t gotten any offers. We’re on the last week of our trip before we head home and we’re desperate to find a way to get rid of the car. Unfortunately we do not think a car dealership will take it, and it seems like we’ll need to pay to have it recycled and there’s a bit of paperwork involved and we don’t speak Japanese nor have a stamp.

Anyone knows where or how to get rid of it without us paying? We have used most of our money on this trip, and although we weren’t hoping to get much for the car, we are really hoping we won’t have to pay to get rid of it.

It’s a 2012 Kei car (Daihatsu Hijet) and still has shaken until December this year. Is still fully functional but has quite a bit of rust (exterior).

Worst case scenario we’ll just need to struggle with the recycling, but we would really appreciate some other recommendations or options. Thank you!
