Context:
This is Makiko Ida (井田真木子). For the uninitiated, she was a freelance journalist and extensively did work in the domain sociology.
In 1990, she worked on a book about Joshi wrestling and the art of emotions behind it. Unlike Meltman and Thigh Rubb Fapp with their sources coming from their assholes, she explicitly talked with CHIGUSA NAGAYO (THE star of Joshi wrestling, retired in 1990), and the rising Shinobu Kandori, and had throughout discussions about why they did wrestling and what it meant for them.
Her work is so influential she got a non-fiction award for her book (the Oya Shiochi award) and managed to grave a sentence into the common language of Japanese (kokoro ga oreru, 心が折れる, which means "heart-breaking", "soul-crushing" or "burn-out"). She never claimed to know everything, never let her bias involve in her studies, and never ran with a dubious source.
Unfortunately, she passed away in 2001. However, her works have been re-published in 2014. Unlike American wrestling journalists, she's still very fondly remembered among Japanese wrestling fans who knew her work
The Kana/Arisa Nakajima at The JWP Climax 2013 Event is one of the best Joshi matches in Joshi history let alone JWP. These two went All Out on one another. Great match. Best match of Kana’s run in Japan imo
Looking to expand my knowledge of Joshi Wrestling: Any matches to watch?
I've been watching Pro Wrestling for the past 14 years now. I'd like to say that I have a very knowledgeable taste in Pro Wrestling, but I want to watch more Joshi wrestling besides knowing names of renowned wrestlers. I think I really started paying attention to wrestlers from Japan when I was watching WWE in 2017 and Shinsuke Nakamura and Asuka made their respective debuts on the main roster. When I started to become a bit disillusioned with WWE, I discovered New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor, and then later on All Elite Wrestling, where I explored a whole new world of Japanese wrestlers like Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hiromu Takahashi, Sumie Sakai, Kota Ibushi, Riho, Yuka Sakazaki and Tetsuya Naito.
Last year, I watched STARDOM's All-Star Grand Queendom 2025 and enjoyed it a lot, namely the matches featuring Starlight Kid vs AZM, Saya Kamitani vs Tam Nakano, Suzu Suzuki vs Mei Seira, and Syuri vs Mayu Iwatani . Since then, I've been watching more Stardom like the 5 Star Grand Prix and then it later led me to checking out matches in Sendai Girls Pro, Marvelous, and Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling. When I watched TJPW for the first time, I immediately was drawn to Miu Watanabe and Miyu Yamashita. I saw their match at Grand Princess '24 and was amazed!! I bought a Wrestle Universe subscription just to watch Grand Princess '26. So, send me some matches you recommend, as well as some must-watch matches that joshi fans should see.
